First off I'm a bass player, but I own the PSA1 along with its predecessor the Sansamp Rackmount. To this day the original sounds better than the PSA1 to me. But it does not have the presets or the ability to save different settings. It does have a little more and better gain than the PSA1. I got into using the Rackmount when I had put together a parallel bass signal rack like Dug Pinnick. I used a Sansamp RBI for the cleanish low end side along with two of the Original Rackmount preamps tied together via their rear linking jack's. I just switched between two different mid and high toned flavors of distortion this way. I used the PSA1 in my small rack when I found one used for $125 a few years ago. It is nearly as good as the original Rackmount units, but I have never really cared for the fairly noticeable dull sound of the programmable SansAmp gear. You should find and try an original Rackmount unit, it is the better sounding one to me. As dated as they are I still use them both. My rack also had compressors, Eq's and a SS power amp and line mixer. The whole thing weighed nearly 200 pounds, I had a rack system that looked like Billy Sheehans rack with more gear in it. I also owned the pedal format PSA2.0, but gave it to a guitar player since I prefer the Tech 21 Dug Pinnick DP3 pedal (killer pedal). That pedal officially retired my last minimalist rack system. I really enjoyed this video and appreciate the work it took for you to produce it. The key to great distorted bass tone is having a parallel signal path. Cleanish lows and low mids along side of a distorted mids and high signal mixed to taste, that is what the DP3 pedal does via built in high and low pass filters with compression on the clean signal. Tech 21 makes great stuff, and I really appreciate how much of their gear can be used on keys, drums, and vocals as well as guitar/bass. A lot of people don't know that.

I’m using IRs with a Sansamp GT2 - sounds MUCH better. The sansamp provides a great base sound but IRs add the icing. To me, the PSA Buzz, Punch, and Crunch controls shape the gain structure. I’ve always felt that having a sweepable mid to the EQ would make a good thing even better.
@georgepelekoudis4 жыл бұрын
My first encounter with a Sansamp was at a studio I assisted in. We had the previous rack model. Same controls, no presets. Always used on bass. Later on, I purchased the same unit you tested. I sold it to my brother for $500 to pay for the BF Pro Tools plug. They give it away for free now..My brother sold that one, and bought the 1.1. Still sounds amazing, with an additional trim volume +/- pot. Their work around to using IRs, is to crank the treble up, like you did. There is a guy in NYC that's able to mod the one you tested, to activate/disactivate speaker simulation. Have a good week :)

Have had mine for a decade - the clean sounds are a bit brittle for my taste but I love thrashy presets 24 and 38 enough to keep it all these years. Play it through an Ampeg b15N to smooth the highs and warm it up.
@swmorgan5153 жыл бұрын
I've had my PSA-1 for 20 years and it still holds up well compared to digital modeling. And the way in reflects picking dynamics is unparalleled. The built in speaker sim is indeed dated, and is noticable in distorted settings. I add an IR in my DW set to 75% wet / 25% dry. Gotta pick the right IR too because many IR's will sound too dark added to the PSA-1

Into an old sound city 4x12 bass cabinet. When recording nowadays I would probably have some IR loaded.

Mine's buried in a closet, and I've forgot I have it, lol. This reminds me of what a great versatile bit of kit this is. Only, I think mine which I bought during the 90s is slightly faulty, in that it will have a tendency for the sound to suddenly "flatten" and the good sound ive dialed in would get thin and the sound character would get dull. Maybe their newer version of this has corrected this strange problem.

The key to using the Sansamp stuff with guitars, direct, and without using an IR, is that you need to use a reverb. Then it gives the feeling of it being in a room, rather than being so "direct."
