Leopard Defends Kill from Hyena

What a sighting at Mopani Safari Lodge in South Luangwa, Zambia! This Leopard had made a kill and was robbed by a Spotted Hyena, which is not too unusual, but this Leopard wasn't too keen on letting it go.
She came back at the hyena and tried her best, which worked to a point as the sneaky cameo at the end shows.

Hyenas are serious. That shoulder barge followed by the low thrust with the jaws to the opponent's soft underparts. They are smart and tough as nails, incredible footage.

Did you see at 0:21 the technique of the hyena? She tried to grab the leopard from below, like grabbing a prey in the soft parts. If she manages to catch him, the leopard could also be hurt severely, because the hyena would never let the grip go. She tries not to face him directly because she knows that the leopard has an incredible defense.

Just watch on KZbin of one example of a hyena displaying how freaking tough they are. It’s called ‘Epic hyena survives brutal 3 time lion attack and lives’. This hyena got one of his paws chewed off, suffocated along with numerous other injuries and it survived. Yeah I get it, if the lion really wanted to finish it off it could, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

I always love watching different animals interact with each other but I always enjoy seeing Hyenas and Leopards interactions the most. Something about it is just very thrilling and they always put on a good show. I love Leopards but I also wish that people would stop hating on Hyenas and actually put some respect to their name. A male Leopard can usually stand its ground with a Hyena. But, only just. Female Leopards generally give up their kill, as they don't have the size. But on rare occasions, even female Leopards can put up a fair fight..

I think that was a young leopard. The second leopard that came and grabbed part of the kill later was probably the mother. Scuffling with a big hyena is the kind of thing that an adult female leopard would probably try and avoid but an overconfident young leopard might try.

That's one big hyena! The leopard had confidence because there was another leopard nearby. Had there been a second hyena, the leopard wouldn't have advanced. Fighting technique: The hyena was trying to get past the leopard's front paws by getting under the leopard. The leopard realised this and started leaping backwards (at 0:21) so that it could still use its front paws. Otherwise, the leopard could have lost its rear leg to the hyena's jaw.

Cheetahs do work in unisons, they are called 'Coalitions' which are usually groups of 2 to 4 cheetahs. However they are still too weak to confront fully grown hyenas. Leopards on the other hand do not require such groups because they have evolved to carry their prey up trees where other predators can hardly reach. Tigers and lions are good climbers but the trees can't handle their weights.

Hyena has far more muscle and endurance than a Leopard or any big cat, Leopards and endurance should NEVER be put in the same sentence, it’s common knowledge Leopards have very quick explosive power but zero stamina. Only advantage Leopard had over Hyena is claws but anytime the Leopard uses it’s claws on a Hyena, it does nothing as Hyenas are designed to tank 1100psi bites from each other and can walk off male Lion attacks, a Leopard is doing nothing to a Hyena but running away up a tree.

The poorness of big cats always disappoints me... A lioness, a leopard, and a hyena are helpless. A hyena can give a fatal injury to a leopard with a single bite, but the leopard's claws and fangs do little damage to the hyena.

Though Hyenas are bigger than leopards, I have always felt that a Leopard can easily kill any Hyena but don't know why this does not happen. Leopards are the real perfectionist and dangerous hunters..

Not really. Both Hyenas and Leopards can kill each other. They usually don't fight, because leopards don't want to be injured.

Nope. Hyenas can survive mauling from multiple lionesses. Also leopards are solitary animals, they will never fight together as it can be seen at 0:36. The other leopard just took the chunk for itself rather than helping it's friend.

Hyenas are much more intelligent than leopards and it’s so evident in this brief battle . The hyena knows the Leopard is too weak to go for an extended fight and or a kill . The hyena straight bullies the leopard and pushes it back . If the hyena latches on to the leopards leg it’s over . The most intelligent and amazing predator in Africa
