For all my dudes in America I really suggest getting a tank conversion kit. I have a 20 gallon tank with a mesh lid top and I absolutely hate it. What I would recommend is tilting it on its side where the top of the tank would be facing you adding tracks right where the lip is and add acrylic or glass panel doors. Where as you would have sliding glass doors like a Vivarium but not really because it’s all glass. And The air circulation can be made with a holes all along the glass panel doors

I love Arcadia's light and heat products! I use the shade dweller kit and the DHP in my leo's bioactive. I also plan to get one of those new jungle dawn led bars to replace the aquarium led lights I'm using. I just wish that Arcadia would release longer versions of the shadedweller kit because I want to build a 4ft enclosure for my leo, and the uvb wouldn't be as effective.
@leopardgeckotalk4 жыл бұрын
Is it a 4ft long or 4ft deep tank? I wouldn't worry if its long, a light and shaded area is actually quite ideal :) I think in diegos tank the UV will be most potent over the one side of his tank, and the other will be shaded. I've tried the LED bar with the new tank and wow it's powerful, illuminates the whole tank, really good :)

i highly doubt you’ll reply to this since this comment was so long ago, but i just got a leo myself and i was wondering, do you use anything else to emit heat other than the DHP? im not sure how i should go about heating her tank. i’ve heard a heat mat and a ceramic heater work, then i’ve heard just a ceramic heater, then i’ve heard just a DHP so im super confused as to what to do. thank you!!

Just wanted to mention that whether the source of a vitamin is natural or synthetic doesn't affect whether it can be overdosed on. What is important for that is whether the vitamin is fat soluble or water soluble. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body's fat stores and don't get urinated out as waste. The source of the vitamin doesn't change how they're stored in the body and how dangerous it can be to overfeed them.
@leopardgeckotalk4 жыл бұрын
oh no i know that, but for example instead of using straight up vitamin A which can be overdosed, the supplements I use use something that the body can change into vitamin a if needed -- the name escapes me, but it is non-toxic/can't be oversupplied.

For those in US concerned about dimmable/pulse proportional thermostats for their deep heat projector, it seems that exo terra has a 600 watt thermostat that is pulse proportional/dimmable (as specified on their package). The others seem to be on/off in regards to retail store brands like the other exo terra thermostat models, zilla, zoomed,etc.

Hello person reading my comment! (Hopefully Leopard Gecko) I need some advice. I’ve been researching and saving up for a bearded dragon for months. I really like them and I think they are beautiful and fun creatures but I just can’t afford them. I’ve already bought a 40 gallon tank but I have no way of getting more money besides some help from my mom every week. I’ve decided not to get a bearded dragon anymore because I want any bearded dragon in captivity to live a rich and full life which from the amount of food they eat isn’t likely with me. I have 2 reptiles already btw so I have experience! Do you think I should consider getting a leopard gecko because I don’t want the supplies I bought to be a waste

Ah that's a shame, but good for you for not getting a beardie anyway - some people will get pets when they can't really afford them. Do you think any of your current reptiles would like an upgrade? You could use it for that? There are other lizards like Rankins Dragons and toad headed agamas that are somewhat similar to beardies. Whatever you choose, just make sure you do lots of research and really really want it, as a lot of these lizards can live a long time :)

So recently, my almost 4 year old gecko, Nova, has been acting weird. Her tongue is white, she is acting tired, her tail is smaller and a little wrinkled (she lost it 1 and 1/2 years ago) and she won’t eat food. The pet store where I’ve been getting crickets from has 3 sizes of crickets, and I’ve been getting mediums. Their mediums have been getting smaller and smaller, so I decided to move up to large’s. I fed her 3 large crickets (I usually feed her every other night but I was planning on feeding her 3 larges every 3 days). She lives on eco-earth btw. The day after is when I noticed her tail was kind of shriveled, so I took her out and looked at her stomach and there was a dark spot, but it was pretty small. Still though, I was worried about compaction. I gave her a bath and she was more energetic about that, and last night I gave her another bath and it had the same result. However, when I took her out, she crawled around on my hand for a bit then pooped on my hand. However, the poop was only the white part, and it was VERY small compared to what their poops usually are. I believe she’s compacted, but I’m not sure. Eco-earth doesn’t make geckos compacted I thought, but maybe it wasn’t the eco-earth and was instead the large crickets. Also why would she have a white tongue? Her tongue is usually pink. Thanks!

I was wondering if there’s a US equivalent to the habistat dimming thermostat? I’ve tried to google it but all the blogs and sites I’ve read talk about the actual Habistat dimming thermostat, and not alternatives. Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve had my baby for about 7 months and I’m slowly upgrading his tank because he deserves it 💕💕
@miyukiwynter8854 жыл бұрын
From what I've heard in reptile groups the herpstat thermostats are considered some of the best dimming stats in the US.

Ah maybe Lisa is right ^^ :) I'm not overly familiar with some of the tech in america, so you may just want to check out the reviews and everything, but hope that helps :)

My leo is in a 10 gallon temporary tank because she is a baby baby. Im working on buying a front opening tank with the rock background for her. Within the next 2 months she will hsve the best tank ever. But i read as a baby, to big of a tank can cause stress.
@nightinggale64704 жыл бұрын
A baby will not be stressed in a bigger tank as long as there’s enough clutter and coverage. How big will her upgrade be?
@sahvanna974 жыл бұрын
@@nightinggale6470 I got the 10 gallon because she was still a hatching. Her permanent tank is a 36L x 18w x 12H. I had read that she may not be able to find her heatsource or food in such big of a tank. She's starting to get to a size that i am confident she will be ready in a few weeks for her new tank

I’m so sad right now, I was meant to get a leopard gecko today but the company “internet reptile” sent a microclimate thermostat instead of a habistat one, and it doesn’t work, they also sent a cheap heat mat that also doesn’t work. .. so not happy with them at the moment

How come you are using DHP and not something like the Arcadia halogen spot lamp? It produces far more infra red A while you are only getting a small amount with the DHP, mostly infra red B. Which is fine, but it doesn't penetrate and warm the organs as much as A
@leopardgeckotalk4 жыл бұрын
DHP is much better than the halogen lamps --- and I talk to the guy who makes these lol. Halogen produces UVA also, whereas I provide a UV lamp which produces UVA & UVB, so seems a bit weird to provide UVA twice. Plus it goes off at night, so it'll be cold.
@ReptilesandResearch4 жыл бұрын
@@leopardgeckotalk it's about how deep the heat penetrates though. I'd like to hear what John says since I've seen arcadia posts using both halogen and DHP on the same set up to get more of the infra red spectrum
@ReptilesandResearch4 жыл бұрын
@@leopardgeckotalk in regards to going off at night, you want a night time drop anyway, all that energy stored in all the slate should be released at night as infra red C. My own set ups have a 30C basking spot and everything goes off at 8pm. By around 1am the basking spot temps are around 27C still. My lowest temps recorded are around 20C.
@joesheehan__4 жыл бұрын
I'd be inclined to agree with your way of thinking. A solarmeter would confirm the correct levels of UVA if you were concerned, however I haven't seen any proof yet of tungsten halogen bulbs giving off UVA. Is there anywhere I can read up on that @leopard gecko? I would say the benefits of near infared outweigh risks of UVA if the levels of UV are correct. I personally run a halogen bulb as a basking spot, then use a DHP on a day/night thermostat for ambient temperatures. I find it works quite effectively and replicates a day/night cycle well, too.

I got a leopard gecko from PetSmart in March and I am going to ReptiCon this August. I'm gonna look around and a year later I will possibly get a female leopard gecko to breed with Maurice. I do want another male and 3 more females though. I am going to sell the babies at ReptiCon the next year. (Or whenever the female starts laying eggs that are infertile)
@nightinggale64704 жыл бұрын
Please, whatever you do, don’t breed your Petsmart gecko! You need to know the genetics of any geckos you breed, and Petsmart geckos do not have good genetics. I don’t recommend breeding at all for multiple reasons (they’re very overbred, it’s expensive, you’re unlikely to sell the geckos unless you have really good morphs, females could get eggbound, etc.) but if you insist, please breed responsibly and don’t breed a Petsmart gecko. When you have multiple geckos, keep in mind that they should not be housed together. There’s a very high chance they’ll fight. I strongly recommend joining the reptile Amino on the app Amino. There are a few experienced, knowledgeable leopard gecko breeders there who can help you out more.

I just got a new thrive hexagon 20 gallon terrarium for my gecko and since I’m a kid I have to save up for everything I want to upgrade him with I was really positive about eco earth since you use it
@fionashepley4784 жыл бұрын
She no longer uses eco earth. Eco earth can be dusty and cause joint problems. Reptisoil, organic top soil (without fertilizer or perlite, Scott’s is a good brand), or a bioactive substrate would be better. It can be half textured tile as well. That tank isn’t big enough for an adult leopard gecko. The bare minimum for an adult is a 20 gallon long (30x12x12 inches), and bigger is better. You can check Craigslist for cheap tanks or use a properly sized plastic tub.

Fiona Shepley what about plantation soil ??
@fionashepley4784 жыл бұрын
STORMY BRADLEY plantation is coconut fibre, the same thing as eco earth. You can find Reptisoil at Petsmart, Petco, other petstores, and Amazon. You can find organic top soil at hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. Just make sure it doesn’t have any fertilizers or perlite in the ingredients. I’ll see if I can link a particular brand

Thank you so much for this video. Theres still something I didn’t quite understand about heating. So you use either a heat mat or a deep heat projector not both at the same time right? And you said about the UVB light that it’s on a timer. How about the deep heat projector? Is it on a set timer also (eg 2 hours in the morning) or is it always “on” but turns on and off automatically using the thermostat? Sorry for asking such a dumb question but I’m getting my very first gecko next year and I wanna be prepared as best as I can Thanks , greetings from Austria, Liz
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
You don’t need a timer for the deep heat projector, just a thermostat. And halogen bulbs are better, although they require a dimming thermostat.
