Very rarely can a show make an initially one dimensional "nerdy tech guy" character steadily become one of, if not the most developed personality. Not to mention they had the gall to make him almost a villain as a result of his trauma, and then they had him prove himself as the biggest hero of the show and sacrifice himself to break a time loop that he believed was an inevitable thing to be repeated ad infinitum. Leopold Fitz was a god of character development, even blowing Grant Ward out of the water in terms of how afraid he made us as a villain.

Agreed. Every time I go back and watch the older seasons I'm always floored by how far he's come. And it's all a completely natural progression. The writing and acting on this show are nothing short of phenomenal, especially when it comes to Fitz.

All the fumbling around they were forced to do while waiting for "Winter Soldier" to release didn't do them any favors, a lot of viewers changed the chanel and many of them didn't change back. It seemed like they had a solid direction for the show after the movie, but didn't know what to do before that aside from establishing characters.

Yes!, This show is so well done but sadly the only way I can watch it here in New Zealand for free Is on Disney plus and Disney plus only has the first season. :( maybe that's why it's so underrated because it costs like 3 dollars for one episode. That's just what I think.

3:56 you can see that even Hunter is surprised by Fitz's more ruthless nature and Hunter knows some of the things that he went through. It just shows you how much he changed in a few seasons and how others in the team may not have noticed because it was so subtle and they were all changing too but Hunter clearly recognises that he's not the same person that he was when they last saw eachother

I love Fitz so much. I miss season one’s Fitz but I’ve always loved seeing how his character development went along. Aside from everyone’s differences on the show, every agent we’ve seen has gone through hell and came back. One thing that the main characters have in common is that they’re no longer innocent. Daisy, Fitz-Simmons, and May are the only ones that are left from season one. Sarge looks like Coulson but he’s not; he’s too different. In the first season, Fitz had this aura about him. You could practically see the innocence oozing out of him. He would get so excited to be going on another mission and his eyes would just light up. But it wasn’t very soon until he was betrayed by Ward and he suffered so much from the symptoms of hypoxia. Mack was there for him as his friend but what Fitz really needed was Simmons. I was more than shocked when I found out that she had taken off and left him. Sure, she came back but they were a team. Everyone that spoke to or about them called them “Fitz-Simmons.” Hell, the first time they were introduced on the show, by Ward no doubt, they had to differentiate by saying which was which. Iain de Caestecker(Fitz’s actor, in case you didn’t know) has done a hell of a job over the years with this character. My favorite moments are usually the most heart-wrenching. Iain’s acting is at his best when Fitz is breaking down. For example, the time when Jenna got sucked up into the time monolith and he started yelling and banging on the stone. The shaking, the voice cracks, the teary eyes, the frantic hand gestures, the ragged breathing; all perfectly done. It puts me in pure agony to see Fitz break down but those time are my favorite by far. Another example is when Fitz was suffering from the symptoms of hypoxia, as I mentioned earlier. The way Fitz would hold his temples and shut his eyes as he held up a finger for everyone else to be quiet as he thought. The way he would show his frustration when he couldn’t quite grasp the right words as his foot tapping slowly became quicker and more anxious. You don’t fall in love with the way a character laughs, you fall in love with the way they break down. The way their voice cracks and their eyes tear up, how they crumble to the ground and their body shakes as they finally let out the sobs they’ve been holding in. A character’s true personality is shown when they’ve lost everything. Whether they continue the fight or give up just shows how determined they are, or how broken. When a strong character becomes weak or when the funny, comedic one stops making jokes. When the happy one stops smiling or when the one who hides what they feel breaks down and lets out the loudest sob in the room; that’s when you really fall in love with a character. You don’t fall for the smile in the mirror, you fall for the tear-stained reflection in a piece of broken glass.

Why this show doesn't get much recognition is beyond me...but AOS have some of the best characters in tv history with great character development, and Leopold Fitz is definitely one of them. Once again you strike Marina, first with Daisy and now with Fitz, it's outstanding how you're capable of showing this character development in such a unique, beautiful and amazing way. This kills me inside, it's so remarkable and beautiful, it can only amaze me. Thank you for delivering such a beautiful moment, I loved every second of it, I can't stop watching this. And I think people might focus to much on plot, which the show sometimes lack a little of, instead of focus on the characters, which are the real stars of the show, because its a character driven show!!! I have loved the show since day 1 for the plot also but the real draw has always been the characters, both good and bad (i say bad as evil not bad as bad actors). Most who judge the show focus too heavy on the plots or arent willing to look beyond the first few episodes of season 1

Chandler Rerie I'm a part of those people who really liked season 1. I love that crap about going from place to place and finding weird stuff. And then the whole Hydra thing was just amazing imo. I did not see it coming because I don't read comics and didn't really think it was gonna tie into any of the movies. So Ward really fucking got me. And it still hurts!! But you are correct, it's all about those characters who are so deep and fleshed out in comparison to other characters on TV!

Fitz is my favorite character in the show, and I think all time. I relate to him so much. I too have hypoxia, all my friends think I'm faking it but I'm not and I always tell them to watch the last 2 episodes of season one and half of season two to get what I go through, they now understand, but also don't. When I first watched this, it made me sob because this is exactly that I went through, I imagined my dead sister was right next to me, I couldn't talk to anyone properly. I just have a connection to Fitz that I can't understand. Please, don't make fun of anyone with a disability, it hurts them.

I'm just now realising how deep Fitz and Ward's relationship was and how it was such a catalyst. Fitz never had a caring older figure in his life because his father became the voice in his head that kept telling him he wasn't enough. Ward never had the opportunity to take care of his younger brother because he went to prison for burning down the house that gave him nightmares. They became what the other needed, but as soon as Fitz lost that figure for the second time it broke him again, but this time it was physical. His brain damage was a direct result of Ward's actions. The framework took over his mind so severely compared to everyone else because he was already broken. The parallels between Ward and Fitz are so clear because it shows what happens when there is no solid older figure in your life so the trauma accumulates. The thing was that Ward let it consume him and Fitz let it fuel him. The scene where Fitz tells Jemma "I'm just like Ward" is so heartbreaking because he got to see what would have happened if he let that vengeance consume him like Ward. And framework Ward showed what would have happened if he let his trauma fuel him like Fitz. They were two sides of the same coin but one knew how to overcome trauma to fight his nightmares and the other knew how to become his nightmares to rationalize his actions.

In terms of character development AOS is one of the, if not THE best shows out there. Its only been half a season and i already want Flint and the girl back to the past, also Mack has had some serious character development in this season, better then he ever has been. I cant wait till the wait is over for the next episode. Plus i feel as though with fitz he still has a part of the evil fitz from the framework within him, thats why he is able to become so confident.

Fitz here from Agents Of Shield and Wesley from Angel/Buffyverse had the most drastic character transformations, and played brilliantly by the actors. I only hope Fitz and Simmons don't get the Fred and Wesley ending. I was so glad when Joss Whedon made Much Ado About Nothing with Alexis and Amy as the lead, it was like watching Fred and Wesley again in an alternate universe.

I loved seeing Hunter come back for that one Fitz's eps. When he grabbed the gun and threw Enoch's head on the table and pointed the gun at him, you could see Hunter's' face like what the fuck happened mate? Also love the expression on his face when he first wakes up in the future and says, "I have it in me..." all evil and determined like.. OOhhh and when he killed that other dude with the invisible gun was so cool.. I just love this character.. i love this show so much.. an incredible tv show or movie is really rare nowadays

When Fitz came back from the submergence and hypoxia I cried. I cried because Iain De Caestecker put out there for the world to see, what my life was like after surviving a brain aneurysm. Suddenly somebody out there got it, understood what it was like to have to make a new life, to no longer want to speak to people because of the aphasia and physical haltings and failings. I felt I was watching myself in him. I truly think he should have won an Emmy for that season. Thank you Iain, for your incredible talent and research in putting out there everything I ever wanted my friends and family to know, but no longer had the ability to do so.

Here's the thing with the framework. It wasn't him but it was. The Fitz we love has a lot of self doubt and anger burried deep inside. Probably from his father leaving and being isolated growing up because of how smart he was. But that side never really came out or won because he had GOODNESS in his life. He had his mom. His family. His success and most of all he had Jemma. The FW made him live a life where all those good things were gone, replaced by shallow forms of something else (his horrible father, Aida's manipulation etc etc). At the end of the day he was forced to be that person, put into that world and having had all the goodness stripped from him/it without his consent. He may have lived that life, but he didn't chose it. He does however choose to be who he is in the real world. Chose to help people. Save his friends. Love and find Jemma. Now it's just a matter of coming to terms with another version of himself he was forced to play out.
