I’m a volunteer at the AMNH butterfly Vivarium and I throughly enjoyed this video. I didn’t know skippers we’re not currently considered butterflies thank you. If you haven’t been to the American Museum of Natural History then I highly recommend it they have a live insectarium exhibition which is amazing

@@insectspotlightproject you’re very welcome this is one of the best insect KZbin channels right up there with Ant Labs, if you’re serious about coming I can easily get you a free ticket. Also if I may make a request for a video I’d love to learn more about the Mantophasmatodea or the Grylloblatodea please and thank you

Depends on who you ask! Nowadays many people place skippers within the Papilionoidea (the butterflies) - they used to be their own superfamily (Hesperioidea). So as of right now, I would still call them part of the butterflies. But this is a fairly recent development. Thanks for the support!

Great videos and information! I'm on the East Coast and am in the process of reintroducing native shrubs and flowers to my property. I came across your videos as I'm trying to educate myself more on insects, in particular, Lepidoptera and how they interact with the native plants I'm planting. I've subscribed and look forward to seeing your future content!

Moths are not a coherent group separate from butterflies. It just means all lepidopterans besides butterflies. Many are closer to butterflies than to other moths.

Correct! I definitely dont want to give the impression moths are monophyletic, but despite their non-linear grouping, we still can use some descriptive traits to help us narrow down if a lep is a butterfly or a moth. Or more accurately as you said, a butterfly or a not-butterfly lol. Though there are always exceptions of course

So, far, for the helping part, for every order I have watched the main message was "Plant native flowers". As more of a botanist I can only approve of that. But, as I European, for most plants you show, I either don't know them or think "Red alert! Invasive plant!" I see you credit some photos in the description and others on the pictures, is it correct to assume that you took all other pictures yourself? Those are great pictures!

Yup! A couple here and there are public domain but for the most part, the uncredited photos are from my personal library, hence why a lot of them are from the same regions haha. Thank you so much!
