Piece from the movie: Le Roi Danse (The King is Dancing)
Scene at Versailles Palace gardens.
Some Info:
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
Italian-born composer (French nationality from 1661). Entered service of Louis XIV 1653, composed instrumental music for the court ballets. From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti.
He was known to be a libertine. In 1661, in letters of naturalization and in his marriage contract to Madeleine Lambert, daughter of Lully's friend and fellow musician Michel Lambert, Giovanni Battista Lulli declared himself as Jean-Baptiste de Lully, escuyer' son of 'Laurent de Lully, gentilhomme Florentin. Although his life is full of meteoric heights, his love affairs with men and women also brought him down in scandal several times at the great displeasure of Louis XIV. Despite these scandals, he always managed to get back into the good graces of Louis XIV who found Lully essential for his musical entertainments and who thought of Lully as one of his few true friends.
Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris.
His death was caused by a gangrenous abscess which formed in his foot after he struck it with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor while conducting a Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from illness.

This ballet wasn't danced by King Louis XIV at Versailles but at Saint Germain en Laye because Versailles castle wasn't built yet when the king was twenties. In second place, it isn't really clear that Lully foot gangrenous abscess was due to a stoke he did himself with a beating time cane for two reasons. The first one because it wasn't the use to beat time with a cane in church or for liturgical music and then Lully music was led by another conductor than himself (a disciple).

II- “Nation” was a concept well known during the 17th century. Remenber F. Couperin composed a set of Sonatas titled "Les Nations" and Lully himself included an intermezzo "Le Ballet des Nations" in his ballet-opera "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme".

Further more, despite Lully was Florentine born and became a french citizen later, he was completly a french musician and composer because he learnt music only with french masters, except few guitar chords learned from a monk in Florence. He claimed himself to be the leader of french baroque music.

I- Lully claimed himself to be first learned in music and some guitar chords by a franciscan friar in Florence. He came at 13 years old in France as the Mlle de Monpensier private teacher of italian, not as a musician. He learned violin and musical theory with the violist Nicolas Métru, harpsichord and composition with the organist and composer François Roberday. In 1653, Lully began at the court of France as a dancer (Baladin), not as a musician.

Here Comes The Sun The temper of our age requires that its trumpery dress itself in fantastic verisimilitude, and these queer times demands its pound of flesh. But the 15-year-old Louis de Bourbon did not dance half-naked like a noble savage from the New World but a like a savage nobleman of the French court. For the real costume in which he danced at his coming out party, see: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/06/Ballet_de_la_nuit_1653.jpg

Adam Noman Hello, Louis XIV had this suit for the Ballet Royal de La Nuit, a representation made in 1653 when he was fifteen. This event is represented in the movie, Lully even offers the shoes to his king with an explosive loyalty :) But yes, as a french History student, I agree with you : the King could not dance half-naked in front of his Court !

It is a ceremonie that was adopted by the French (perhaps the english also I'm not sure) court from the ceremonies Alexander the great did back in hellenistic times and where continued through the Byzantine times till the french Revolution. The King would always present himself as the son of the Sun nd thus his ruller on earth...

@Persephoie This custom is even older. As early as 6th Dynasty Egypt (around 2,300 b.c.), the pharaohs used the title "Son of Ra", who was the sun god.

Jean Baptiste Lully the son of a "Gentilhomme Florentin" (Florentine gentleman) Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! What a fit of laughter Laurent Lully the father, was a poor miller as it's well known. Then Lully's death circumstances are unsure. First because there was nobody to conduct the orchestra for the religious musical performances in churches. Then Lully was always replaced by an assistant among his pupîls in the orchestra conducting.

What is it's name??? & what's it about? The life of Lully perhaps? I see you've ordered the DVD last month, which should have arrived by now. Does it have English subtitles & or an English dub? No, This is untrue. The nationality existed in Louis XIV times but it meant "to live in one's sovereign kingdom and to be its subject". All the french text of the 17th century told about "La nation française". It was the same thing in every european country.. So, Lully wasn't italian originated because Italy didn't exist yet. He was Florentine born. In the 17th century, Florence was a distinct and independant state. Florence made part of the italian states but Italy was just a geographic area

I- Rather than you are french like me I will reply in english to keep my answer intelligible for everyone. First, "Nation" is a notion as old as mankind being. In a clear way, it is the "community of people native into the same place" (identical root for nation & native). "Nation" socles are founded on various rules, alone or combined, (race, language, tribes, government, destiny, ...) which fluctuated as the times and the countries changed in the past and today.

Certainly not I am right. Lully was florentine born so in these times Florence was an independant state with its own language far different from Roman, Napolitan or Milanese,.... Italian (Roman language) was not yet an official language in all the italian peninsula. Each region spoke its own language. This was the same in France (provençal, occitan, picard,...) or in Germany (Saxon, Prussian, ...) and in all the European countries. Italy wasn't yet a unified country but a geographical area.

II- Provence where I live, is a region next door Italy where there are still three different languages (tuscan, genoese, romansh). They are regional languages and not local variants of italian (dialects). These languages are not comprehensive each others. In Italy a Sicilian can't understand the tuscan language, etc... French people knows well the french island of Corsica with Genoese language can't be understood as the standard italian. Have you other idiotic lessons to give me ?

You're not saying the French weren't French before the Revolution, are you? The concept of nation only didn't exist in its French Revolution interpretation, which is but one and not the most adequate definition. For instance, even the name of the Heiliges Romisches Reich Deutcher Nation reflected the HRE being German, and it was known as that long before Louis XIV.

III- On a second hand, it's illogical to pretend “nation” a modern notion and then to assert Italy was nearly a nation during Lully's times ! In these times, Italy as Germany or Balkans was no more than a geographic area formed by a mosaic of independant states and principalities with their own language, history, administration and culture (Sicilian, Neapolitan or Florentine were far to be different and still remain to be even today).
