If you think Les Dawson is funny and you haven't read any of his books, try them, it's a real treat. The man was a master wordsmith and you will absolutely belly laugh just from reading his books.

The bit about the 3 suits was brilliant. What a lovely man he was and he was. " The wife does what she wants and I do what she wants " Again, brilliant., simple but brilliant. I miss jokes nobody ever tells them anymore. What happened to Paddy Irishman, Paddy Englishman, Paddy Scotsman ? Oh I miss the old days. RIP Gentlemen you were the best at what you did.🤩

Les Dawson was a comic genius. Terry Wogan was a great tv host, among his other talents, for example radio. What set Terry and the likes of Parky apart, was that they made sure the star was the focus. Especially someone as gifted as Les. I am closer to 70 now, if I live that long, than ever before and it's not that I don't get today's comics, I simply am yet to find any on the box to make me laugh. Oh, Bill Burr, cracking comic but he's American.

Regarding the reference to doing Jack and the Beanstalk at Sunderland, this is where he reportedly saw the ghost of Sid James (who had died at the venue whilst performing).

He mentions here that he was going to do panto in Sunderland which I’m assuming was the Sunderland empire, there is a story that he refused to play at that theatre ever again, because he allegedly saw Sid James’s ghost in his dressing room (Sid James died there) So either, it was this year when it happened or the story isn’t true.
@bravo2966

Yes, it was during the 1989 panto season. The following is a quote from the Sunderland Echo: "In his book Liverpool 24, author Tom Slemen recounts what supposedly happened in the star’s dressing room: “Dawson was sitting before the dressing room mirror, when he heard a rather familiar staccato laugh to his left. He saw the ghost reflected in the mirror, and felt a stabbing pain in his chest. It was Sid James - and he looked ‘ghastly’.” Dawson, supposedly, vowed never to set foot in the Empire again and apparently proved as good as his word until his death four years later."
