*+Andrew Levister* Les Paul is heavier and costs more, two things that could easily sway a normal person toward an SG. Lots of us old folks out there with bad backs... and we're the ones with disposable income! I could believe the SG outsells the LP.

@@KevyNova I'm gonna agree as an owner of both, as well. Les Pauls are a labor of love, and if you are not sure which to get already, get the SG. Only get the Les Paul if you are particularly moved by the look and history of the guitar, because in most respects the SG accomplishes a similar sound with far more player-friendly design. They do sound 'different,' but not in the way a Telecaster sounds different from a Jazzmaster. But I do love the look of the LP so much... I'm a "Les Paul on the stand, SG in the band" kind of guy, I guess.

Darrell Braun Guitar how much does the average LP weigh?
@PicksPaints6 жыл бұрын
ion 53, They're kind of all over the place, in fairly recent years, many LP's clock in around the 7lb+ -9lb mark (3kg-4kg). With a few exceptions, you'll see marked as non weight relieved, and traditional weight relieved. Those can clock in upwards of a couple pounds heavier (1kg) late 60's into mid 80's LP's were in the neigborhood of 9-15lbs (4kg-7kg ish) some were even a bit heavier. To answer that question is going to depend on what year, and what model. Because pretty much they're all over the place. Some online merchants list the weights of each individual guitar, some don't. Also, weights can vary up to over 1lb from guitar to guitar of the same model. The answer to your question isn't a very simple one, I'm afraid.

Phil X said he prefers mahogany bodies without a maple cap, probably because it smoothes the top end bite. Now that Phil X is with Gibson since January 2020, and they are making him an LP, it will be interesting to see if he does away with the maple cap. Les Paul didn't like the maple cap either, which is why the original LP Custom was a solid mahogany body - no maple cap. Phil X already had them move the pickup selector down to the control area, replacing one of the three knobs (master tone instead), because his picking hand would accidentally hit the selector switch when he uses his rhythm chops. Gibson will do whatever he wants - time will tell......

thanks for saving me money. I may get a gibson sg one day, but I really do prefer the sound of the les paul, besides tone is really relative. these guitars if you play one, then take a 5 minute break and play the other, you probably wouldn't notice a difference. Playing side by side you can really hear the difference. the les paul sounds to have a more aggressive tone. The highs are still there, but it also has quite a bit more mid, which could be taken out with the amp if you really wanted. Both amazing guitars though, and as every guitarist knows, its not the guitar, its the person in control of that guitar.

Hey that's a great video. I'm looking into both guitars, I've got to play both side by side, but I think i'm probably going to go with the SG. I like a light, easy to play guitar. Both sound great, differences could possibly be made up with EQ. Price-wise if you go with a les Paul Studio they are about the same price, and the Studio is still a great guitar if you prefer the Les Paul. Once you get past the studio you pay a lot more for not as much difference IMHO. Thanks for posting. Your vids are always top notch!
@NerdNoiseRadio5 жыл бұрын
I actually have to disagree with the findings here that characterize the SG as brighter and the Les Paul as richer. This objection is not only from what I heard/saw in this video, but what I've experienced watching and playing the two in the past, which were corroborated by watching the video: Now, if either of the following descriptions sound pejorative or critical, or in any way demeaning of either guitar, they are not intended to be so. I think both sound great, both are better in certain contexts, and so, both have their place in the pantheon. I think it's more like one of those old 10-band equalizers that most of us used to have attached to a stereo receiver at home. Most of us made some variation of a V shape with those sliders. So, if we agree to use the 10-band EQ as our analogy, then to my ears, the SG sounds like an EQ that is set more or less flat. Not much boosted, not much cut. This is good for a good gnarly overdrive, and would fit so perfectly in so many different styles. For that flat "bad attitude", the more more "grindy" sound, I think the SG is the better guitar. Plus it's more ergonomic. But if we continue with the 10-band EQ analogy, I think the Les Paul is more like an asymmetrical V form closer to the shape we used on our stereo, only biased more towards the right, with a swath of low-mid boosted, and mid/high mid cut. But the extreme high faders are boosted as well. So, the reason I'm uncomfortable with a statement so simple as "the SG is brighter" is because to my ears, the extreme high seem a lot less pronounced on the SG. The Les Paul just seems to "sing" so much more. Yeah, perhaps the mids and upper mids on the SG are more powerful, but it just didn't seem to match the LP on the really high end. But then the LP has that big bottom end to keep it from sounding brittle, resulting in what strikes me as a more well-rounded, and multidimensional sound. Overall, I prefer the sound of the Les, but think that the SG is anything but a cheap "me too", with an appreciably different personality that runs complimentarily parallel to what the Les offers, rather than chasing it its wake. Anyway, what do you make of that assessment, Darrell (or anyone else)?

Killer video! Your playing and tones on point! The only thing I’d think I’d contradict you on is the tone description. A Les Paul isn’t particularly rounder in every example I’ve played. They’re a little less mid forward to let the other frequencies in. The SG while still a bright guitar is kind of like turning on a tube screamer where it’s more mid focused in my experience. I guess it’s rounder in the sense there’s more frequencies being heard but an SG is almost woody/honky in the midrange. I compare it to an LP sounding like a Strat and the Tele being more akin to the SG same tone just different things come at you, or maybe an SG is like a strat with a tubescreamer on. I own both so it’s probably my own biased reasonings to own them 😂

Great comparison. The difference in sound is so subtle but you're right about the bite of the SG versus the roundness of the LP. The LP has more of a bell tone. I like that. So beautiful. But the weight of the SG and the cutaway accessibility are huge advantages. But in the end, I would prefer to sacrifice those issues simply because tone is king. We're lucky we don't have to play a standup bass. So what's another 5 lbs or whatever of weight? Although spending 500-1000 dollars more for a LP would really be super painful. I'd be afraid someone would steal it! But who am I kidding? I can't afford a Gibson. I will be buying an Epiphone SG or Les Paul.

These two sounded quite similar... As far as I'm concerned get the one you like the look of if you can't get both. Of course, most of a guitar's basic sound comes from the pickups so I'd think going for radically different pups in both would have resulted in a much greater tonal difference.

I like very much your channel friend, it's kinda hard to find videos that goes straight to the point instead of staying to much in the not so interesting part wich is anything that isn't the actual propose of the video. Keep up the nice job you're doing.
Could there be an SG vs Strat next? Great video as always🎸

Man, what a good job of comparing! My main guitars have always been either SG's , a Les Paul that was my main guitar for 15 years, and Flying V's. I've pretty much got to the point where I felt like the Les Paul was the Hi-Fi Gibson solid body, but I really went with the V's and Sg's in the end. I just feel like there's a really unique personality to those guitars over the Paul that I like.

I love both LPs and SGs. They both look and sound amazing! And, truth be told you can't go wrong with either one. For me it boils down to feel. I LOVE the feel of the SG over the LP. I love the higher fret accessability and the weight. I gig regurarly and used to find it a chore jumping around with the LP. With the SG I can go all night and my back thanks me. I also like how the SG "shifts" everything slightly to the left due to the body joining the neck at a higher position. I think the "warmer"sound of the LP, while it does exist, is over played. I have no problem dialing in a bit of a warmer tone with my amp. But, like I said you can't go wrong with either one! AWESOME video by the way thank you! Best wishes to you.

I have a '71 SG and a '16 LP GoldTop. The SG is faster and easier to play because of the thinner neck. It is slightly brighter sounding than the LP. But the sustain of the Paul is unrivaled. Each is a fantastic instrument for different reasons.

I would say the Les Paul has an over all rounder sound but the SG cuts HARD on the bridge pickup. Love the video man

It's amazing how much more "musical" the Les Paul sounds. More singing tone. Love it.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have owned both in the past. Both were fantastic but I always tended to pick the LP over the SG for live gigs as it was a safe bet. I used the SG only as a back up.The only fault of the SG I found was that you had to constantly retune it after each song in a set. I didn’t have that problem with my LP.

Excellent comparison and also a lesson! You are realy a great and expressive musician! Both guitars have a great tones but I personally prefer SG because to me it seems to have more clarity in the notes while Les Paul has a rounder and warm sound but it seems a bit muffled. Also the problem of playing with Les Paul is the problem of having to play guitar and lift dumbbell at the same time!

Great unbiased and informative reaction, I have both some LP s and recently purchased the EPIPHONE SG Classic Worn Cherry with P 90s. It's absolutely amazing and more versatile than previously imagined. I love my Other Les Paul s to for just the reason s that you mentioned.

I'd have figured the LP would have a brighter tone given the maple top, but tbh I wouldn't be able to tell them apart in a blind test

+Guy Dude Yeah, a lot of the frequencies were similar with just a few more mids / lower mids on the LP. More similar than I was expecting.

Nice video once again. The SG's neck pickup is closer to the bridge and will sound brighter in that position. In the bridge position the difference in minimal. Also; this test will not be accurate as long as the pickups, pickup height and electronics are different. I've done a full pickup, electronic swap between SG and LP. The only difference worth mentioning is the neck position. If you have both guitars, you can measure the the distance from the bridge to neck pickup and see for yourself.

SG sounded wide open with more output in the highs LP sounded a little more compressed with more output in the mids my 2 cents

Greatest rock band in history in my opinion, ACDC, Angus young, SG. He reveals and unveils all the beauty and resonance of the SG!

Thanks Darrell! I'm not a Gibson guy (shameless love of Fender) and my jamming partner who does own Gibson, only has Les Pauls and a Flying V, so I really appreciate a look at a guitar I never get to hear by itself. I still wonder "what if" Tony Iommi's Strat didn't break prior to recording Sabbath's first album and he never had to pick up the SG.
@andrewgarnsey3316 жыл бұрын
The first album was the strat in an lnterview he said it broke after and he couldnt get it fixed the SG was his backup.

A Les Paul consegue ser doce no clean e bem ardida com a distorção, enquanto a SG é sombria tanto no timbre como no visual, e eu adoro isso😈
