If you're looking for an introduction to Québec music, this song would be my pick. With its use of French Canadian slang and references to Montreal streets and classic kids shows, this song (whose title translates to "Shooting Stars") feels quintessentially Québécois. In memory of Karl Tremblay, whose iconic voice carved a place for itself in our culture.

Where do we even start? ☺️🫢 The three shades of blue, carefully positioned, the pomade de Paris, the diction, your accent with it, the hair, the nails and walls, the pictures on the walls … and that’s all on the first run through. Wonderful as usual.

P.S. What language do you want to learn to be trilingual? Mandarin? Songs in French have a weird draw to me, I don't know why. I do not speak French, but I always liked hearing it. It might come down to familiar sounds, like the way the R is spoken is shared with my weird ass local dialect in my own language. It is quite the experience though, to get into music in a language you do not understand, the vocals just become another instrument, as the lyrics hold no meaning to you at all. You connect to the song in a different way. It becomes like an opera, where you might catch the odd word, but for the most part it is all about the beautiful voice as an instrument. (And then you read a translation of the operatic lyrics and find out it is all about eating and farting, and it breaks the illusion haha) If I had a YT channel with an international audience, I might run a bit of an experiment, get people to comment with their country's "artist of the people", then go listen to a song from every artist suggested. Would be a fun way to connect with the different cultures of the world. Then again, knowing how the interweb works, half the suggestions would be trolling, and suggestions would be the trashiest of trash music for the lolz. :P Anyhoo, all of this ranting just to say beautiful as always, well done. And brownie points for doing it in a language I love, even if I did not get more than a few words of the actual lyrics. ;)
@NaomiSV
@NaomiSV 7 ай бұрын
Thank you! I’m glad the song is enjoyable despite not understanding the language, since it’s a beautifully written text and the lyrics are what make the song so special. I’d be interested in listening to more international music! It’s a great way to familiarize oneself with foreign languages. (The little German I know can be attributed to Nina Hagen and Einstürzende Neubaten haha)
@Duckie313
@Duckie313 7 ай бұрын
Ah Nina Hagen, a fascinating person, with a fascinating voice. She is the voice of one of my favourite cover songs. Apocalyptica's version of "Seemann" by Rammstein, her voice brings such an extra level to that tune, even if I do understand those lyrics. ;) It is actually a bit frustrating when you connect to lyrics on a personal level, and you want to convey that feeling, that connection, to someone else, but it gets lost in translation. I tried at one point to share some of the lyrics I connected the most with to friends abroad, and I am just not enough of a lyricist and translator to give it the poetic emotions it deserves. Often end up translating literally, and then the deeper meaning might not translate with it. Like "Hjernen er alene" (song by DeLillos) directly translates to "the brain is alone", which doesn't really make sense in English.
@Duckie313
@Duckie313 7 ай бұрын
@@NaomiSV Actually maybe an idea for your patrons, you could do a thread there getting people to recommend their favourite local artist / song, with links to it, and then you could do an around the world cover series. Might be too huge of a task to take on, but would be very interesting. (Instrumental cover, not expecting you to learn all the languages haha)

Took the original lyrics and put them through DeepL. Last three lines are not in this performance and a few text edits for some words. Here you go: If I stop for a moment To tell you about my life Just like that, quietly In a bar on Saint-Denis Street I'll tell you the memories Etched in my memory Of a time when growing old Was still illusory When I used to tease the little girls Not far from the swings And my bag of marbles Became a real treasure And those snowy winters Building igloos And coming home with frozen feet Just in time for Passe-Partout (children's TV program) But at the end of the day, tell me what's left Of the little school and playground When the paper airplanes are no longer flying We tell ourselves that the good times finally come Like a shooting star If I stop for a moment To tell you about life I realize that, quite often We don't choose, we endure And that the dreams of the little ones vanish or are repressed In this raw reality That pulls us into the mold Thirties, bellies The brats, the mortgage Joys and sorrows The good times and the bad To work, to do one's best To pull yourself up by your bootstraps And hope to be happy A little before you die But at the end of the road, tell me what's left Of our little passage in this frantic world After having existed to gain time We'll tell ourselves that we were finally Just shooting stars If I stop for a moment To tell you about life Just like that, quietly Not far from Saint-Louis Square It's that with you I'm fine And I could' care less Because you see, seeing too far It's no better than looking back Despite old bitterness And loves that pass Friends lost in the mist And broken ideals Life clings on and is reborn As spring returns In a breath of fresh air That soothes aching hearts That's why if at night you feel like staying With me, the night is sweet, we can walk And even though we know it's only for a little while I'd like you to be here for a while My shooting star (But at the end of the day, tell me what's gonna stay) (But at the end of the day, tell me what's left) (Only shooting stars)
