Urban dance is based on the battle stepping on people is part of street dance. When I was battling in the nineties it was a constant occurrence that people would do gainers over you if you were to stagnant in ground rock. Modern street dance fans don’t know what actual street battles are about. They think competitive dance is a tournament thing. It absolutely was not conceived that way. Bboying, boogaloo, crump, freestyle are all street dance battle format dances. Nobody is going to feel sorry for you in the hood battling in the mall if you get stepped on. You absolutely need to keep your space. If you do not act aggressively and command the space you are going to lose the dance floor, this is not up for debate. And if you don’t know what is like to battle outside of tournament you just don’t understand. All of this art form comes out of the gang movements in south Bronx and queens. When the youth gangs in Bronx all wore uniforms and were part of crews that held their block. The movie the warriors is actually based on the history of what happened, including someone trying to organize the gangs into something positive being shot. Point being the whole notion of crews battling is an analogy for gang warfare and a lot of these crews are actually also active gang members when they are not dancing. When I was dancing at koos in Santa Ana it was basically a crack house with a linoleum roll on the floor and the graffiti writers would make the are so thick that your snot would be rainbow colored. Street dance is about connecting with something tribal and primal where only the fittest survive. Expecting people to be polite is bonkers. When I was dancing there was one rule, don’t actually strike someone on purpose. But people would swing their fists in battle rock inches from your face. People would intentionally do power moves to get the other crew to move back. Things have become much more organized especially since Korea became a major player because it was treated as a sport. But before then there were maybe three major battles a year in the USA and the rest of the time you battled because people had beef with eachother. Battles usually started because someone was running there mouth about another crew and it was about shutting that down through embarrassing them. But this was in Highschool gyms, skate parks, parking lots, basketball courts, people think they know breaker burn but never done nineties on broken asphalt. Point being no matter how tame you want it to be. This is art that comes from the ghetto and it will always have a toughness and agression attatched to it. I completely agree with the organizer the guy should have just stepped up and battled back instead of giving him the whole stage instead he walked off and then didn’t shut the dude down when he crowded the spot. It entirely his fault for not defending his floor space.

También cabe destacaar que tight eyez & mijo no tuvieron descanso entre el last 8 y las semis y luego los mandaron a batallar la final instantáneamente. los mataron mental y físicamente
