I don't think many people questioned her sounding like a disney Princess, 'cause her voice is clearly perfect for it, a lot of the contention (mostly from disgruntled white people) was surrounding the fact that she is a Black woman playing Ariel, and in the animated movie, Ariel was presented as white. Either way, the whole drama was RIDICULOUS because mermaids aren't any specific "race" or phenotype, because they don't exist!!! ALSO Halle is both extremely beautiful & talented, so there's absolutely no reason why she can't be a disney Princess.
@LesageSinging3 жыл бұрын
Yes to everything here. I try not to talk about racial issues because I think, as a white person, I will always be slightly ignorant. I'm making a video on this topic specifically and when this comes up in the video I'll be paying a creator who is black woman to speak on these issues. I hope that makes sense. I may be being a bit overly cautious, but I think white people acting woke is an issue. Feel free to correct me if you feel different. Like I said, I may be being too careful.

Yeah It's just like 6 or 7 out of like 13 princess are white already, including the newer princess Anna and Elsa. I think she also fits the role because the sea Ariel lives in is a Jamaican sea. So it wouldn't make alot of since if she were white. They couldn't just change where Ariel is from as most of the songs have a Jamaican sound and feel
@beangelic10003 жыл бұрын
@@the.L.inLGBTQ I only have one issue here, what you state is correct with the exception of Jamaican sea, it is the Caribbean Sea. The music was more towards Calypso in the original, however Samuel Wright did reggae versions of Kiss the Girl and Under the Sea in later albums.
@user-vs9oq5oo6d3 жыл бұрын
@@beangelic1000 The distinction is not super important here, as Calypso is still an Afro-Caribbean musical genre (originally from Trinidad) that now often includes many subgenres, some of which are Jamaican. Reggae is far from the only form of music we have, and is actually based on an older form of Jamaican music, which was quite similar to Original Trinidadian Calypso. Reggae is usually thought to have originated in the 1960's, and we've been making music since long before then, lol. Besides, Samuel Wright was of Jamaican descent, and did use a Jamaican accent in the films. So while it could have been set anywhere in the Caribbean based on the music, only one specific culture was reflected through Sebastian's accent. It's neither here not there, of course, as we can most likely all agree that if Afro-Caribbean culture is to be a prominent reference in the film, it only makes sense for one of the leads to be Black, so we can avoid the appropriative awkwardness of the original movie.

Love Halle and love this commentary ❤️. Especially your comments on how low she chose to go. I think she paid great respect to the song and movie moment it was pulled from. In the scene Nala is an adult (not a Disney princess). She's meeting with Simba with some uncertainty at first. Then the song builds and voice is stronger as the scene plays out. She showed great range and emotion that was absolutely perfect. I'm excited to hear her as Ariel
