The scene where Amaya visits her sister's shrine is one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. And I totally agree with you Elijah - I love that it's not translated. It's an intimate scene between her and her sister, and if you can read ASL then you get a glimpse, but if you don't, then you just don't. Scene makes me tear up every time I watch it

The interesting thing about Viren as a villain is that even though he's doing what he's doing for power, you get the sense that he truly believes that he's doing what he's doing because he genuinely believes it's what's best for the kingdom. In a way, that makes him even more dangerous.

I need to rewatch S5, but there WAS something that happened there that resparked this debate again (dream sequence I believe). Though I wouldn’t be able to talk about it much here anyway for fear of spoiling Elijah! ;P Small/vague S1 spoilers, but the point is: until the bird returns, it’s still open. And considering the bird disappeared and has never interacted with the ONE character who could speak to it, and TELL for definite if it was or wasn’t King Harrow- 👀 Shit still wide open. Point being: the theory, she still lives! Very pointedly so! And if the bird had NO story relevance, why even have it and then MAKE IT DISAPPEAR for 4+ seasons, and keep it EXPLICITLY out of range from the one character who talk to it and settle all this? 👀 👀 👀 Suspicioussss.

I love that scene where Amaya is signing at her sister's grave! I always forget what she is saying when i'm watching the scene becasue my ASL is very bad but frankly what she's specifically saying doesn't matter really. The animation and music already do a great job if conveying the emotion she's feeling. I sometimes get teary eyed no matter how many times i watch it. Amaya is such a great character!

Fun Fact: Bait's color changing is his moods. Every color is a mood depending on the situation: yellow is neutral, red is angry, purple is nervous or stressed, green is terrified or jealous, gray is depressed or sad or sick, blue is for regretfull or sleepy, orange is for happy or feeling loved and pink is for playful or embarassed. Tip for finger spelling: practice in front of a mirror, and try spelling shorter words that rhyme. For example: can, tan, Dan, man, ban, etc. Tin, bin, Lin, din, gin, etc. Bad, sad, dad, mad, lad, etc. Any rhyme words you can think of. They don’t have to even be real words. This way your brain will start to pick up the pattern of spelling! And it’ll feel like a short cut! Then you can go up to four letter words and so on! Enjoy the practice! ❤

When I was trying to get better at fingerspelling quickly I played a game in the car. When I stopped at a red light I would look at the license plates around me and sign as many as I could before the light changed. It was good practice for the letters and numbers. I'm still not good enough at signing to do very much, but I know the basics.

I actually know some (not ASL) BSL, British Sign Language, and i've realised that the alphabet is a LOT more complicated in ASL than what we do here. In BSL we use both hands, which makes it easier to differentiate between letters. But it's so interesting to see the different kinds!

(This is now a ramble, you can ignore if ya want) Personally, even after watching so many times ASL my brain still can't differentiate between the letters, where as the more clear and open handed signing (not the best description, but i mean with more movement) is easier for me to tell what letters is which when someone signs fast. Plus my brain works in big movements so memorising small little signs with one hand is difficult. that probably doesnt make sense, but HEY its 9am i havent slept

The most compelling antagonist is the one that thinks they're the hero. Allows them to justify virtually anything. And few things are more terrifying than a true believer. Probably why I lost track of the number of times I found myself yelling at the screen because of Viren XD (Still surprised by how _dark_ this YA show goes... and glad for it).

One thing you might find interesting with the ASL used in this show is that yes, while Amaya does have her aide acting as her interpreter for the audience's sake instead of using subtitles, they take advantage of this by having a few moments just between the two of them with Amaya signing things to him privately and he doesn't vocalize, little jokes between them that unless you knew ASL too, you'd totally miss purely because it was meant between the two of them rather than for us. No one else translates the lines and they don't subtitle it, it's just quiet little whispers between Amaya and those closest to her.

Aaron Ehasz has definitely gotten better at introducing moral dilemmas and making morally grey characters. Ironically one of the best characters hasn't much screen time, and other hasn't been given his complexity yet. You'll come to see who. Small additional point to note that was introduced outside of the show by Ehasz. The west, human Lands, used to be magical as well. The Elves and Dragons withdrew everything magical from the West before they split the continent.

The problem with not having subtitles for sign languages is that they're extremely regional. Not everyone watching the show is American. ASL doesn't even cover all english speaking countries. Why would someone learn a sign language from a completely different continent?

Some letters can cluster together so it's like your signing multiple letters at once. But I recommend being much more familiar with each letter first before learning how they can connect. There are also some that create "short cuts" between one another. Like going from "U" to "E" you might see someone only use the two fingers in "U" when forming the "E" rather than all four. These kinda become more natural as you go with casual signing. Good things to practice are specific strings of letters that are common, like "ough" and "tion." You got this! Fingerspelling, and reading it, is very difficult to master.

Elijah; I love Amaya too. How could I not? I watched Rise of, Dawn of and War for the planet of the apes even The Shape of Water, that have characters that speak through sign languages either deaf or mute. All characters are important. Amaya is a badass. Oh and you'll love season 4 and 5. Do recommend watching the Planet of Apes trilogy and The Shape of Water.

Since u know King Harrow is dead now, I will say: I think it's for the best, it didn't really make sense for Viren to keep him alive. Viren really loved Harrow in his own way, but he's also really prideful. That combined I think would mean that he wouldn't want to save Harrow after that talk, but also would not want to torture him. Viren does a lot of mental gymnastics to convince himself he's good. That's why his manipulation is so effective, he knows he's lying, yet believes in his lies enough to make them convincing. Also yeah, aunt Amaya is badass. She doesn't buy Viren's bulldroppings.
