We just came back from Paris, it was a dream! Just wanted to thank you for all the recommendations - for the starter, we listened to you and took RER from the airport to the Les Halles - it was really easy and our hotel was right there ( Novotel Les Halles - highly recommend to anyone who’s looking for a good hotel, and the location was superb!) We also ate at the La Jacobine and Le Louchebem, and ate chocolate and caramel from Jacques Genin, and more - all thanks to you! I hope you know how helpful your videos to us! ♥️

Great video though just one thing to point out (at 04:00) there is now a direct sleeper NightJet service operated by OBB (the Austrian rail operator) to go straight from Paris Est to Vienna with various levels of comfort for the overnight journey 🙂 Also Gare d'Austerlitz is very handy to catch the "Intercités de Nuit" domestic sleeper services to places like Nice, Toulouse, Briançon, Tarbes, etc. Hope this helps and thanks again for such comprehensive content

We traveled through the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France and the UK last summer using the trains and a few long-distance buses. What a treat! We saved significantly on fares, including what it would have cost if we bought the Eurail Pass (known as Interrail Pass for Europeans) by planning ahead and buying tickets as soon as they were available. Based on my calculations, our costs were one-third the price of buying near the departure day or using the Pass which often requires a reservation with a fee on top of the Pass. And I did the same thought process as you about the "cheap" flights - time to get to/from the airport, time to wait at the airport, plus the baggage restrictions. Although we travel carry-on only, many of the less expensive flights allow only one carry on item rather than a small suitcase and personal item.

Brilliant, got a 1st Class Interrail Pass for April and will be going from Caen to Paris after WW2 sights, so this is just what I need. Is the train in the video the "Train Nomad"? For identification you are supposed to carry a passport throughout Europe, never mind where you are from.
@jolanda.c
@jolanda.c 10 ай бұрын
Europeans like me (The Netherlands) can use a European identification pass in the shape of a creditcard and that is valid in the EU and some other countries. Sadly for me, it is not valid, since Brexit, in the UK. Therefore I need to have and buy a passport. As I don't travel that much outside of the EU and that is expensive if you just want to go for a weekendtrip to London.

Only SNCF high speed train we've used was Lille to Lyon in 2019, we love Eurostar, but within france we use TER, and for free as I get passes for SNCF, as I work on tge railway. 2019 we went by train from Glasgow to Naples, spread out over 3 nights, was fun, apart from Thello. We also used the Frecciarossa 1000.

@Les Frenchies it was, we travelled Glasgow to Euston on a 390 Penolino on the Fri, stayed overnight St Pancras to Paris on Eurostar, on the Sat, stayed overnight in Pantin Gare de Lyon to Milano Centrale on the Sunday night via Thello, was horrendous Milano Centrale to Napoli Centrale on the Monday on Frecciarossa 1000.

Absolutely love European high-speed trains. I second your comments on the train versus flying. Even if it takes a little bit longer, give me the TGV any day! I can fly in the US! Even if I wasn’t a total railgeek, taking the train is just so much more relaxing. Gare du Nord is my favorite European station bar none, but we won’t be traveling through that station on our trip this summer. Since we are headed to Provence and the Riviera we will be leaving and returning via Gare de Lyon. I hear it’s a beautiful station so I’m looking forward to seeing more of that station.

I was in Gare de Lyon last year to take a TER to Melun for Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. It seems that all the usual ticket machines don't sell TER tickets because Melun wasn't appearing as a destination on those machines. It was quite confusing but after about 10 minutes of looking around, I finally found another smaller machine that sold TER tickets. Maybe I was doing something wrong on the normal machines or maybe there is just a separate machine for TER.

@@duke3572 @LesFrenchiesTravel .This is to separate the queues. The number of TGV or suburban passengers is much greater than that of TER. There is a good chance that the machines would be crowded by these users and the poor TER passengers would have to wait a very long time. Separating the types of trips separates the crowd.

Going from France to Switzerland high speed it's called TGV Lyria, and from what I can tell it's a little bit of an upgrade in terms of dining of regular TGV. Going between Paris and Lyon you can also use the high speed Italian train frecciarossa. It has 3 classes including executive which only has about 12 seats per car, one per side. They look and feel like first class plane seats that recline and they rotate. I found the Lyria a little smoother than the frecciarossa, but the latter had better food and service. I heard them squeezing my orange juice (on a train at 300kph!)

Excellent advice as always - one exception to train or plane is (or might be depending on your actual destination) from Paris to Nice. The brand new train/tram goes directly from Nice airport Terminals 1 & 2 into the city. It's very fast and from Airport to the Port (the farthest point) is approx. 35-40 min. with approx. 15 stops along the route.

TGV trains do not go from Austerlitz. To get a TGV to Tours you go to Montparnasse. Austerlitz is where you get the classic non TGV trains to Orleans and down to Toulouse (also served by TGV via Bordeaux from Montparnasse) The other function of Austerlitz is where the Night sleeper trains to all points south as far as Madrid and Rome. You missed one station out: Paris Bercy (near Gare de Lyon) This serves trains to Clermont-ferrand and the Auvergne, also Auxerre and other stations in Burgundy.

Even though my husband travels internationally a lot he was nervous thinking about renting a car and driving out of Paris. So when we arrived on a Sunday morning we took the train to Rennes and picked up our rental car there and continued on to Mt st Michel. Then a couple days later we dropped it off in Bayeux where we were doing our D-Day tour from. After that we took the train back to Paris. It was so easy driving in the French countryside! Worked out perfectly!

Taking an Audi Q8 out of the Sixt lot at CDG was one of the most stressful things my husband (with 99%ile spatial relations) ever did. The lot was built for small cars not a good size SUV and there were always 3-4 sensors screaming that he was about to hit something (he didn't.) Worse the lot was jury rigged and it had two sets of spike strips, but the signs weren't clear about which way would destroy your tires... we chanced it and it worked out. Next trip we dropped the car in Lyon and did the 5:30 hour drive back to Paris in 1:56 on the frecciarossa (not the TGV)

Hi guys...as you seem to have your finger(s) on the pulse, can you help with this one please? Was shocked to see a recent train video re French trains and almost everyone still had masks on. I thought it had been taken a few years back, but no. What's the word out there re train travel, plus because of COPD, I was exempt in those scary days of yore? Going to Spain in early September via, London-Paris-Girona and would like to know the rule of thumb... cheers in advance.

Bonjour, as always packed with such useful info. I'll finally be in Paris mid April till the end of April, it'll be more for taking care of my elderly Papa, than sight seeing, though of course, I'll spend a few days in Paris I wonder if I need a power adaptor to charge my phone and can I buy it at the airport?

Trying to purchase Saturday tickets in late May from Paris to Bayeux....is it normal/typical that at this time there are only 3 morning trains available? Does anyone happened to know when other times should be available?

We are planning a trip to France in August 2023. We wanted to leave Paris on Aug 16th and travel by train to Caen or Honfleur, however, my searches show no trains on the 16th of Aug. Do you know why? There are trains on Aug 17th but we are checking out of our hotel on the 16th. A bit of a problem for us. Any advice?

The "Train Bleu" restaurant in the Gare de Lyon train station is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Paris. However, the food is generally pretty average and overpriced. Best way to handle it is to have tea, breakfast or a light lunch in order to have the experience but at a lower price.

So far the best video with clear information on train travel from Paris. Thank you so much. I planned to visit Normandy Omaha beach 1 or 2 Jan 2024. Not sure if it is the best time but that is the only available time we have in our calender. We planned to take an early train and return before 8pm in Paris. Is there any train or public transport from the Caen train station to the Omaha beach war memorial spot and then from there to M S M. ? If not how much will be rent a car, where to rent from? Taxi? Do you think we can make it Omaha beach and take a quick tour in Mont Saint Michel in same day and return to Paris? Please please suggest.

What you should really be aware of is luggage. I dont know about first class but second class? There is almost no room for airplane size luggage. Almost none. Overhead size luggage and backpacks are all about you can safely take with you and find a spot to put it in. So keep this in mind.

Bonjour !

Sorry but the quickest time to travel to Nice is 5:30....not 4:30....maybe in the near future if they build the high speed line.
