I didn't quite understand why the holes and electrons formed in the depletion region were moving in their given directions. The electrons moved over to the negatively charged side which already had an excess of electrons, which seems like the opposite of what should happen.

@@fonduman213 It is kind of confusing. The important thing to note is that the P layer and N layer have NEUTRAL charge to start out with. The P layer (green holes) is not positively charged, it simply has atoms with the electron structure that allow it to accept electrons and become negatively charged. So when the depletion zone forms, the area of the P layer in the depletion zone is actually negatively charged, in other words it was neutral and has now accepted electrons. So when more green holes pop up, the go to the negative charge which is the P layer, and all the green holes stack up and flow through the load. You can probably get a better explanation than I can give if you look up how a diode works, which is literally what a solar cell is; a bunch of PN junction diodes.

Thank you for the video ! Can someone explain to me why the electrons generated by the light energy crosses the depletion region into the N-side ? The field favors that direction; but the field is only present in that direction within the depletion region right ? Beyond the depletion region, in the N-side, electrons would want to stick around the positive ions in the depletion region. So why does it move toward the terminal in the N region (Away from the positive ions) ?

Probably two years too late now but here it goes. Imagine now the electron has travelled to the n side, with that one more electron at that n side. The n side is initially charge neutral. This electron pertubs the charge balance of the n side by making it more negative. The positive and negative "forces" don't equal now. So the sensible thing is to kick an electron out into the external circuit to maintain back its charge balance. I was doing some reading about the James Bond Movie: The Man With The Golden Gun on TV Tropes and Idioms. They mention that the villain: Scaramanga, has Solar Cells that operate at 95% efficiency. They mention that the best that solar cells currently get is 25 to 35%. They added that if solar cells really could operate at 95% efficiency, then all other power sources would be obsolete and the energy crisis would be solved. We'd have all the power we'd ever need. Hopefully they'll achieve that soon. Imagine, you'd have solar panels on your roof and never have to worry about running out of power. You could have them on your vehicle and never have to worry about recharging the batteries. Vehicles of every type, except submarines, could be solar powered. Even jet aircraft, since there is a such thing as electric jet engines. The problem with them right now, is the batteries can't hold enough power to allow them to fly the same distance or further then standard jets. Too bad.
