These birds are some of the most loyal and intelligent which is why they are survivors. One had a nest parallel to my bathroom wiindow in a blue spruce. One night, a huge thunderstorm hit with gale force winds and hail. I watched in horror while the tree swayed and the momma got pounded by the hail, believing she would fly away and abandon her nest of five, but she stood firm and sat there with her eyes tightly closed and did not move. When the storm passed, she peeked underneath her as if to make sure the little ones were ok, and went back to sleep. From that point on I have major respect for these birds for their unwavering devotion and protection of their young!

I love feeding my backyard blue jays. I’ve never been able to tell them apart because they don’t stick around long enough. They grab their shelled peanut and fly quickly back across the large pond to another tree. There’s one that always accompanies a wood pecker who knock, knock, knocks on my patio tin roof to demand her peanut. I love your videos so much. Thank you for taking the time to share them. ❣️😁

The birds are amazing creation. My Daughter keeps several feeding stations in the back yard and I get to sit in my outdoor rocking chair and watch their antics along with the chipmunks, squirrels, occasional blond fox who always stays back by the woods, woodchucks, the deer under the apple trees snacking on the fallen apples or reaching up in to grab one from time-to-time, woodchucks, and other critters that come in. Whenever, a raptor (mostly hawks and owls) shows up everyone of them stop and not move or flee for cover.

Lesley, I’m thrilled that you decided to make and post this video! Your intimate knowledge of your flock of blue jays has elucidated aspects of their behavior in never would have suspected! Females feeding males! Extramarital affairs and even possible copulation! I live in a wooded area of a city and blue jays don’t live in my yard, but they keep a sharp eye out for me putting out nuts for squirrels and birds. They call excitedly when i do, sometimes very close to me (though i don’t see them!) i watch them from my window - they eat and drink at birdbaths - but the only interaction I’ve seen between them was a blue jay aerial fight a couple of years ago, i think over the territory of my feeding areas. I’ve learned so much about them from your videos. Thank you!

@LesleytheBirdNerd8 күн бұрын
Agree 100 percent! They are all so much more than we realize :) That's so interesting about what you learned about your chickens wing flickering. With the blue jays it don't seem to be correlated to that because Feisty Jay is such a dominate jay, certianly high up in the hierarchy. Love this stuff, birds are fascinating.

It’s September in the northern new jersey foothills, and that means we have had some BIG visitors flying through our territory. The hawks are migrating south, which strikes terror into my heart- along with the hearts of our Vatican of Cardinals. This year I fought hard to make life easy for the cardinals, and now we have many new sweeties.. very proud of Conkey & Ruby and how far they have come.. it has been the greatest joy of my life on earth. Yesterday I was outside pacing back and forth to try and discourage the hawks from stopping by our territory. There were so many hawks yesterday that I was forced to take off from work in the afternoon! I looked up and my heart dropped as I saw 4 hawks.. heading this way. But then, something spectacular happened. 6 Blue Jays banded together at the frontline in the pine trees and they made a STAND. 🪖They were all chirping their cute little monkey call, but with 6- it was intimidating enough to deter the hawks from coming our way. I watched in tears of joy as the cardinals came around me and were also looking up happy at the Blue Jays. We all lived to sing another day.. thank you for showing love to our sweetie blues! 🕊️😇

They are my favorites. I started this hobby this year and I have seen so many different types of birds but I have come to love the Blue Jays the most. I love how they look at me and tilt their head kind of like a dog does when it's looking at you to say hey what's going on. They are very shy however they fly in quickly grab shelled peanuts from my feet are and fly away. I have seen videos you have posted where you actually get them to come to you and take a peanut mine if I move or make any noise they get spooked and fly away. They will observe me from a distance and I'm hoping that when the weather gets cold that they will come to know me and not be so afraid of me and understand that I am their friend and want to help take care of them. I love taking pictures and I'm a photography nut as a hobby and love taking beautiful pictures of all the birds but the Blue Jays just capture my heart. I even bought one of those deck propane heaters so that when it gets snowy and wintery I can still stay outside and enjoy them and continue taking pictures. Do you have any advice on how I can get them to trust me and come take peanuts. I have tried placing some of them on my deck railing a few feet away from me with some getting closer and closer to me but they won't touch them until I go inside and then they of course will come down and grab them all. How long did it take you before they trusted you?

Along with the black-capped chickadees, cardinals, mourning doves, woodpeckers, and a small grey bird that I do not know its' name, but who has a lovely song.........the blue jays are "regulars" in my yard. The cedar waxwings only show up between June and July to eat red berries from a tree I have, and then when they have eaten all the berries......they're gone.......but amazingly they come every year to that one tree with the berries. Most of the others are year-round visitors.

If I wasn’t out there with peanuts in the shell by nine in the morning they would squawk repeatedly at me. I gave them peanuts numerous times throughout the day, every day.
