Hi Leslie I love your channel. I have a bird who has been visiting my finch feeder and I am unable to identify it. I thought it might be a common red poll but this bird has yellow on its wing on the side and no spots. Is there a email address I can send you a few pictures I've taken so maybe you can identify it. I'm not on facebook or Instagram. Its driving me nuts I can usually identify all the birds who come to visit. I'm wondering if it could be a hybrid??

Hi Spark_ they feed for an hour or two every day at different times during the day. It’s a constant fight over the 8 or 10 perches on the two feeders. And usually 20 on the ground below grabbing all the scraps. My yard has many big pine trees that they can hide in which I think makes them feel safe. Have a great day.

I noticed a small flock for the first time this year in Southern Wisconsin. They flocked about our finch feeder. At first glance, I thought that they were small House Finches. What caught my attention was the brightness of the red spot on the forehead and the smallish size. Beautiful little birds that are fun to watch!

There was a vicious cold snap in Minnesota one year well into the negatives Fahrenheit. I found one of these sitting on the side of the road freezing to death because it couldn't fly. I had no idea what kind of bird it was at the time aside from a generic finch thing. Since I already had pet birds, I had an endless supply of seed and fashioned a clean place for it to mend. It took the better part of a week, but its wing healed and flew away gracefully when I let it go. It was one of the more rewarding things I ever did. Now whenever I see redpolls, I smile.

We have been feeding winter birds here in North East Alberta for 20 years, red polls are often in the 100 plus range along with blue jays, chickadees, grosbeaks, white breasted nut hatches, some small sparrows, and numerous wood peckers. I have fed many different seeds but find that black oil sunflower seed are the most universally popular, I go through about 20 - 16 kg bags every winter, love the birds so this is my treat.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESCUING the bird !!! And thank you for being so compassionate !!! It was SO SAD !! We all cried !! 😢 one of 'em broke her/ his neck ,so died instantly ,but the other one wasn't ! That's how now I remember. I guess ,I deleted it from my memory now !! Too sad !! We hired some window experts & we got the lined ones ! It wasn't really fair for birds as our windows were always sparkling clean as my mom ,grandma, aunts ,everyone cleaned 'em so - sparkling clean every single day ( we Japanese do that ,maybe no more w/ the new generations !? ) & our gorgeous trees reflections on the window fooled 'em !!! They thought it was an open path between trees !!! 🌳 It really broke my heart !! 💔💔💔 Definitely one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed in my life !! These “Redpolls” have been flocking around my feeders for the past month. They are giving the Goldfinch and Chickadees quite a run for their money in the race to empty my finch feeder. They come in a huge flock and fuss and fight with each other as well as with the other small birds. We do have the House finch here which has a reddish color on the belly and head but the Redpolls are different and definitely travel in large flocks unlike the House Finch. I can always tell when the Redpolls arrive to feed for the day because the noise level increases by quite a bit. They are small but I think that the Chickadees are smaller. We have had a problem with Starlings swamping the feeders lately. I put black oil sunflower seed hearts and peanut slivers in the cylinder feeder for the smaller birds and that is what the Starlings go for. I have a platform feeder for larger birds and that has whole black oil sunflower seeds and shelled peanuts in it. The Starlings want nothing to do with that! They flap their wings and flop around, scaring all the other birds away, and gobble up all of the smaller bird’s food within minutes! I moved the cylinder feeder closer to the house so I could attempt to keep the Starlings away but the nervy things kept coming. As soon as I scare them away the finches and Chickadees come right back until the Starlings decide to come scare them off again. It will be feeder wars until June when the Starlings leave to go steal from the farmers who have planted their crops by then. 🙄

Just wanted to say I really love your channel. Here in Interior Alaska my last dog passed away several months ago. Now that my outdoors time isn't spent keeping track of them, I find myself fascinated by the birds that, before, I rarely took the time to even notice. So many red polls, black capped chickadees, boreal chickadees, some kind of woodpecker, boreal owls, and I find myself loving these critters. Oh, and ravens - I've always noticed them and, to the disgust of my poor wife, I can do a pretty good raven call. Every now and then they'll come back around and investigate me, and now and then there would be one that would "play" with my dog, gliding low in front of her so she could give chase, then coming back around and doing it again. I've found Bernd Heinrich to have some great writings, as well as the newly published Rebecca Heisman. Thanks again, you're a great resource!

I have never had a bird feeder before this past year and I saw these little birds this year! I am so glad I watch your videos because I know what they are! From northern lower Michigan

Along with the purple finch, the redpolls are a constant sight at my feeders this winter. Little bird with gumption, they are a lot of fun to watch! The young goldfinches have also joined the finch brigade this year, though I have them every year, all year long. The large wild thistle growing in our wooded area is a huge draw for all the finches as well as our feeders. Thank you for all your wonderful videos of so many wonderful species of birds!

Another great presentation Lesley the Redpoll seems to be a very industrious bird that is fascinating the burrowing in the snow for shelter.. The male bird is such a handsome animal with his red breast and matching cap.. more power to those birders who provide food and shelter to our feathered friends and greetings from Sydney Australia.

Very nice footage of the smallest member of the Finch family (Fringillidae). I have seen them at least 5 times this winter here in Southeastern BC. No flocks, but on one occasion, 7 Common Redpolls came to my feeder to eat the black sunflower seeds. Prior to this winter, I didn't see any Redpolls for 3 years.

I have a large flock of redpolls in my wooded yard in North Western Ontario. They are enjoying seeds from my bird feeders. They are often accompanied by grossbeaks. Its my first time cohabitating with these sweeties.

This year was the first time I saw Common Redpolls! I had two different sightings here in West Michigan of flocks around 15 feeding on Spruce tree cones in my yard. I love their rosy red colorings, how they hang upsidedown, and their "finchy" calls! It was interesting to learn how large their population is and how far they can travel.

We had never had Redpolls in the past at our feeders. This winter about 20 showed up shortly after Christmas. By the end of January the flock had grow to about 50 Redpolls. Other flocks continued to arrive through February and March. We feed them in 5 different spots in the yard so it makes it a little easier to count them. We have about 200 that we are feeding right now. Early on, we bought Nijer seed in 4 or 8 pound bags. Now we buy it in 25 pound bags and just ordered a 50# bag. They are an expensive hobby, but worth every penny. Our yard has a long row of Spruce trees where they seem to spend the night and there are birch trees scattered throughout the yard. There are so many of them, I'm sure they stripped all of the Birch seed in about 1 day. The Bluejays kinda boss them around, but they do OK with the rest of the birds.

I’ve never noticed them here unfortunately but there are plenty of spruces around for them to clean

I have just begun feeding birds so this is my first of meeting dark eyed junco and red poles! Your video is very helpful in identifying my redpoles! I had Juncos for awhile as they liked the walnuts i was feeding a couple squirls. I bought some bird food that said Juncos like and then these little birds with a red cap and red chest appeared. I live in Southwestern Illinois. They also had a red line down the back too when they were hopping around feeding. I put my food on the ground. I have a few mourning doves and a lone Cardinal joined the group yesterday! I also saw a bald eagle today!!!! And we had 2 red tailed hawks! Very busy birds in my neighborhood! Bald eagle was the best treat to see!!!!

I just started trying to hand feed birds in my rural backyard in Wisconsin. Nuthatches and chickadees started quickly. Then a couple of days ago 2 redpolls stopped by and instantly landed on my hand for some walnuts. Haven’t seen them since!

Can't say I've ever seen a redpoll. I live in Central New York, just 2 hours from the Canadian border so I guess I better keep a better eye out for these little cuties. Thanks again LTBN! ✌

I've usually had these every winter in my mountain home in northern Utah. High elevation. This is the first winter I haven't seen them. But we've hardly had any snow.

This year we have about 50-80 of them daily. This is in North Central Wisconsin. We love watching them completely demolish our no mess seed trays. And yes, we have a lot of other birds. Only 3 years in this house, but for what it's worth, we have not seen a flock like this. First yea we had about 100 song sparrows and for a brief moment we thought they were back haha.

Here in south central B.C. we have hundreds of pine siskins every second year when the maple trees are heavy with seeds. We get red polls occasionally.

Love you videos and learn a lot from them. For the last 2 weeks here in Chicago, I have these beautiful birds in my backyard feeders in groups of 30 to 60. I had to buy another nyjer feeder to keep all of them happy and put also seeds in the ground as this was not enough. What a lovely bird. Thanks for all you do.

Love your videos. I was thrilled to see some of these eating nyjer seeds this month in the snow just outside my kitchen window. 🕊

I just started birding this year and spotted some on my feeders a month ago. I had no idea what they were at first, I thought it was a weird cross between sparrow and house finch and had to do some investigating. Now I have a small group of five to seven that hang out everyday! Thanks for the videos, I just found your channel and love it!

I had them this year, in a big flock at my one thistle feeder in south central Montana. I may have had a couple Hoary Redpolls, too. They were such a beautiful pastel. I didn't see one at the right angle, close enough, after I learned about the the bill-size, so I could confirm, but they were strikingly lighter than the others. The other return winter visitors is a massive flock of Gray Crowned Rosy Finches. They whorl around in murmurations and land on my roof sounding like a hail storm.

Here in South Central Manitoba I have a bunch of our Redpoll friends that stay around my backyard feeder, (sunflower seed) The other day I was able to convince one of them to take some seed from my hand. They are so small, and friendly. Thank you for all your bird videos Miss Lesley our bird nerd, they are very informative, and I just like every thing about them. 🐦

Loved the video! I saw common redpolls this past week on my trapping adventure in Northern Kansas and Southern Nebraska. It's first time I'd seen them here and I was able to identify thanks to your video! Thank you.

This was very interesting to me. The reason being I have so many redpolls that come to my feeders. I've always called them house finches. It was so nice to learn their proper name. One thing you forgot to mention is what a beautiful song 🎵 these little ones sing. Thank you for the great video!
