Leslie Dan: Erection of a Major Steel Beam at the Roof of the Atrium

Construction of the Leslie Dan School of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto, designed by Foster+Partners. The choice to use steel for the roof of the atrium allowed for the 6 storey space to be completed without shorting. This video shows the lift of one of the beams.

One of my friends worked in erecting steel frames for buildings, something happened ( ? ) anyhow a steel beam fell, crushed his legs, amputated left leg below knee cap, right leg above knee cap ! Its very dangerous work ! 😢

More than likely an injury like that was the result of getting caught between beams falling over on the ground, there's often very little room once the iron is shook out.

That actually want pretty smooth. The guy flagging was a pro with a good feel for the rig, walking the piece in like that, because you only have 1/8" play, top and bottom, is my guess. Were the bolts in the splice plates snapped tight already..? I can't tell because of the editing how long it actually took, but 'way to look after the green connector. lol He's lucky to have had a good partner. Local 86, Seattle.
