The great thing about Leslie is that she has a lot of flaws - like every human being - but she makes up for it in passion and heart. She does bad things sometimes but she always does her best to make it right and to apologise and fix the situation, and her intentions always come from a place of wanting to do the right thing. Parks & Rec is so awesome because the characters work together to improve themselves and each other, and by the end of the series they've really grown and developed.
@ploopyfudgewink92073 жыл бұрын
Yes but consider all of these mistakes are over an extended period of time AND after her closest friends had singled out these unsavory tendencies (on multiple occasions) to her. She doesn’t listen and it’s almost like she keeps people around simply because they work as buffers for her fuckups and have much more passive personalities. She’s so focused on proving she’s ‘great’ that she sees taking the time to work on herself as a hindrance when in reality, it’s that mentality that sets her back and prevents her from growing as a person. It’s like Leslies caught in a loop of acting without forethought but stumbles into success repeatedly because she keeps good people around.

A decent chunk of these clips are from Season 3-4, which is when Leslie was still transitioning from the "ditzy Michael Scott" type to the "blooming flower of hard work" type. I think the writers maybe didn't know how to naturally get her to be a very hard worker without being ditzy, and maybe they thought this was a good way to transition her. Just a thought.

But it's also selfish to declare that your "good" is the good of others. The Anne clip is a perfect example. Leslie forces Anne to not drink white wine, but Anne says "it's my headache". There's some nuance to it. If a person is about to get hit by a car, it's okay to push them out of the way. But a lot more situations have a lot more nuance and it's incredibly arrogant to steamroll over others and decide for them, pushing your own world view, versus hearing them out.
@sheatetables2 жыл бұрын
@@MaxMckayful anne is also an adult and can use her words to say no. Leslie has a strong will because this just how she is as a person. I work with little kids and I am constantly amazed by how strong some of those kids opinions are about things they hardly think about while I struggle to get other kids to be anything other than totally indifferent. People come in all varieties and Leslie is just the type to think that she has the answer. Because she thinks she has the answer, she often tries to push her views on other people, and while I don’t agree with her doing that, it’s also up to others to say no instead of letting her steamroll them. While I do agree that Leslie can be too much, I don’t think she’s selfish - I just think she wants to see her friends be happy and succeed and sometimes it’s hard for her to understand how she’s coming off to other people. In the end, she does say and do more than she should, but it’s not fair to blame her for things that others stand by and allow to happen. She can have her opinions but other people don’t need to let those affect them.

@@ernestoagapitogarcesconyad1710 At the UN, when Leslie declares "we can still spend time together as friends", that's arguably gaslighting. Rather than state it as a hypothesis, Leslie declares it as basically factual. It forces Ben to push back and assert his view that, for him, it doesn't seem possible. It's not the perfect example, and to be clear it's also not being done maliciously. But it is, as Ben says, selfish. It's declaring that her world view is fact, not opinion. And denying Ben his world view in the process. The non-gaslighting version would be more like "I would like to continue as just friends if that also works for you". Gaslighting was saying "just friends will definitely work". I do think there could also be more terms to tease apart some of these nuances. Because I do agree that Leslie doesn't do the more egregious, traditional outright malicious, essentially lying. She's less "lying" and more just declaring her opinions as fact.
@clarestollery25033 жыл бұрын
When Ann says she hates Harry Potter and that Leslie made her watch all 8 movies, Leslie replies that she loves it because she's watched them all. Basically gaslighting by changing reality to suit her preferences (She wants Ann to likes something so forces it on her rather than letting Ann have a say).

Just a thought - but why is this channel more critical of Leslie Knope than any other character from a show? She's flawed but she doesn't get away with her mistakes or bad behaviour. More often than not, she works to improve her department, help other people, do her job well and achieve her childhood dreams- she can be overbearing, stubborn or narrow minded sometimes when worrying about something beyond her control but she's more willing to own her mistakes and work on herself than others - I really don't think she is problematic.
