In the Irish Army, we call bean bag shells, rubber bullets and tasers simply 'Less-Lethal' because they all can still be very much lethal when used

Yeah, right? Had to look that up because I thought the boiks had it wrong. Apparently that's a term that's used now, which is dumb, because that stuff absolutely CAN be lethal. The intent when using them is to not kill, but the potential of them causing death exists, which means they can't be classified as less-than-lethal. That's really weird to me.

@@BrutalDongshart I think the term "Less than lethal" was originally in relation to the intended deployment areas of the devices on the use of force on the continuum. Ie. Cooperative Controls > Contact Controls > Compliance Techniques (Soft Techniques) > Defensive Techniques (Hard Techniques) > Deadly (Lethal) Force. Hence, "Less than lethal" because the tools (Capsicum spray, Taser etc) could be used at either Compliance or Defensive technique stages in conjunction with other use of force techniques (restraint holds etc). And once you reached deadly force, you'd be using a firearm until the threat was neutralised, not relying on spray, baton, taser etc. But the term "Less-lethal" is definitely a better fit, from both a public perception stance, and from an officer training stance.

They're probably quite small but get decent velocity, so they probably still hurt like hell. I've heard of protesters getting shot in the head with bean bags and bleeding heavily as a result.

All video games follow the same dubious non lethal morals. If you shoot someone with a tranquilizer there is an extremely high chance of killing them unless you're an experienced anaesthetist and know their weight, status and any allergies. If you physically knock someone out for more than a few seconds there is an extremely high chance you've given them permanent, severe brain damage and left them in a state where they could die at any moment
