I've learnt that the Russian language has the formal and informal showing respect to other people. We with our Australian English don't have the colloquialism that you do, but it does not mean that our tone of voice is disrespectful towards someone. As for colourful slang words, I'm sure every language has them.. ''Ta.''

Think of "formal" as keeping the distance, not trying to get into someone's space

*You had me scared for a moment, when you told people to say, Я из + nominative, instead of Я из + genitive! Of course, Russians aren't going to expect foreigners to speak flawless Russian--but I'm pretty sure one should always use the genitive case with "из"! Кстати, я американец, а живу в Японии, где работаю в университете преподавателем английского языка и английской литературы.*
