Cat pillow
Description:
On this series I am offering free lessons for those who want to learn to sew both by hand and machine. These classes are for beginners or can be used as a refresher. In this video we will use the Ladder stitch (otherwise known as the invisible stitch or slip stitch) to complete a pillow for my cat. I will show how to start, work, and finish this stitch.
*I’m not a professionally trained seamstress, everything I share was taught to me by my mother and grandmother, as well as some tidbits I picked up over the last 28 years of sewing my own things including costumes and clothing.
If you would like to make one as well the supplies you will need are as follows: 2 pieces of fabric of each of these measurements (I used quilting cotton). This is a self drafted pattern. (x2) Large rectangle: 22”X14”, (x2) Medium rectangle: 22”x3”. (x2) Small rectangle 14”x3”, as well 1” thick blanket batting of your choice cut to 21”x13” (x6), Thread that matches your fabric, Bees wax for your thread, sewing needle, thimble, scissors. [Optional finish: yarn, yarn needle, awl]
I will first show you the Ladder stitch and then I will play a compilation of my pillow making, followed by my cat testing the pillow.
To make the pillow I worked all the way around one side of the pillow using the backstitch, and then when I added the other side of the pillow I used the backstitch to sew most of the remaining side and left a gap for my batting. I added the batting in layers so to keep it all flat, and then finished with the ladder stitch to close the pillow. I chose to use yarn to die the batting down in sections, this will keep the batting in place so that when I wash the pillow it won’t get displaced.
