What I love about these videos is, I get to stop them, practice saying them, start the video again, stop the video, write my notes. I have repeated three lessons, and have taken a multitude of notes. Prior to each lesson, I go back, read each aloud, form new sentences, and make sure I'm doing this correctly. I told my husband I'd never spoken much more than si, gracias, and "donde delor?" horribly butchering the question but patients understood it. That was about the sum total of Spanish. So this morning I broke out in multiple conversations with ... none other than myself while going through notes. My husband says ... "That sounds great. What are you saying?" I laughed and said ONLY MY SPANISH TEACHER & I KNOW FOR SURE. I've been listening to Spanish radio, picking up a few words you've taught here and there. Great teacher. What I should have been able to learn in 4th grade, I am now actually learning at age 66. ¡Eres el mejor profesor de todos los tiempos!

Great lesson. I have a nit about the pronunciation of "ll". I was in Colombia a week ago and an acquaintance had trouble understanding me when I used words that contained the double Ls. I was using the "y" sound and he was expecting a soft "j" sound, sort of like the the "j" in "jazz". I also noticed that Spanish speakers in Costa Rica use the "j" sound too. Please keep up the great lessons. They do help!

Thank you sir. Please keep em' comin'! Question: Another teacher said 'hay que' means "let's". It seems as though it would mean, 'there is that....", but she said it's used in expressions like "let's clean - hay que limpiar." or 'let's go to the beach - hay que ir a la playa'. Do you hear or agree with this?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, HAY QUE + VERB expresses obligation without naming who has to do it. It is like TENER+QUE+INF but with tener, you know who has the obligation. Hay que limpiar todos los días. One must clean everyday, as opposed to tengo que limpiar todos los días. I have to clean everyday. I wouldn't use it as let's do something though. Hay que pensar antes de hablar - One must think before speaking.

🤔 Are there any tomatoes? That’s a quite dangerous one as in Mexico it would be ¿Hay jitomates? because when using the Spanish word “tomates” you will get the green ones which are used for the green sauce (salsa verde) being a fruit and not a vegetable 😉 Mexican especiality 🤷🏻‍♀️ Papel del baño = toilet paper

one surprise response I got at supermarkets and chain stores is "tarjeta de punto?" or something along those lines, asking if I have a loyalty card to get my points for the purchase. I don't think I have ever managed to hear the exact phrase since it is mumbled and very fast. But I usually hear tarjeta or punto and just say no, no tarjeta de punto. I still haven't asked how to sign up for one! After the amount I spent at the hardware store, I should have! but many of the points programs are to let you buy something at a discount, like back to school supplies. Great if you want one of the things, but otherwise not helpful.

I hit the "like" button for this video. To give you an idea of where my level of Spanish is Paul my streak on "the game whose name may not be spoke" is number 590. That means 1.6 years on working every day learning Spanish. Some of the material presented in this video was great review for me but that I already knew. I would like to say that you are making some really great total beginner material here. I can see that you are thinking about your frame, and where your hands are it it. New challenge, think about your eye contact. Right now you are always looking at the camera. This might be a challenge, but a cool trick you could use is to "look at" the text you are showing on the screen or even gesture at it. I know it's hard. The text on the screen is not really there, you add it in artificially. So to look at the text on your screen would be a little tricky, but you are discovering a real talent you have for screen layout that you started to learn when you were working in cartoon format. Like I said this is a great beginner level video! Keep up the good work. Another Spanish language channel I watch featuring Ana just went over a million subscribers. She had to work eight years to get there, but you have some real talent and more and more people are going to find this channel. Keep up the good work!

I enjoy your sense of humor, they make the lessons fun. For me, yes these are a review which quite frankly are a good thing because I find that my biggest challenge these days is remembering what I learned ages ago. That brings me to a lesson I had near the beginning of my language learning adventure. I hope people are keeping searchable notes (that's my #1 tip). This lesson took me back to a lesson brought up and that I had early on regarding hay vs estar. It took me a while to get it. So I wanted to share only so others may be aware of the different uses. Using HAY when you are referring to non-specific and using ESTAR when referring to specific. ¿Dónde está el video? I'm asking where is the video, meaning a specific video so I used el. ¿Dónde hay un video? I'm asking where is a video, not a specific video so I used un. I have a question which is at a more advanced level so please ignore if just learning this concept. Quite frankly it's a note I took some time ago in a class. I want to point out that even as we move through the learning levels confusion pops up when unexpected. Aquí hay dos problemas: está el problema del dinero y luego está el problema del tiempo. There are two problems here: there’s the money problem and then there’s the time problem. [teacher translation] I understand the "hay" because it's saying 2 problems but not specific, and I understand está because it refers to each specific problem. I might have used estar because of using hay but why isn't it SER. Is it because the second part is explaining what the two problems are specifically? Could it have been state El problema es dinero y el problema es tiempo?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosemary You always have an eye for the details of the language. Your example with the problems got me thinking how I use HAY and ESTAR together and I think it comes down to whether a definite article is used. To say that HAY refers only to the non-specific is not exactly accurate but it is how we often describe it beginners. Take a look: Hay fresas en la nevera. Las fresas están en la nevera. Both discuss the same strawberries, and even location. The difference is the definite article. Your example follows that pattern too: Aquí hay dos problemas: está el problema del dinero y luego está el problema del tiempo. I am running through different sentences and scenarios in my head and this seems to be the pattern. At least this is how I have been doing it.

Q-roo. Thanks for all the questions and pauses. I am getting so much more out of these exercises, doing them one at a time and then writing out completely each my answers. So much more productive for me than finishing the lesson then doing some lección sheets or something. ¿Para mi? Golden! I like and enjoy your technique and it certainly is working wonders para mi epañol. ¿Este gringo viejo? Me encanta.

Have you covered the difference between between disculpe and con permiso and perdon. And the big one, the difference between por and para?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't covered the difference between the discuplpe, con permiso etc but I like the topic idea. I will also be clarifying those in a future lesson of this new course as well. As far as POR and PARA are concerned, I made a short video awhile back covering some of the more common usages of each: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmOxqpadbaqcqq8

Hi Paul, thank you so much for the effort you're putting here for us, I'm really enjoying your videos. A quick question, do you recommend watching more than one video of yours per day? I feel I can watch many videos and still be focused.😎

I pack a lot into these videos. Many people tell me that they have to watch them more than once to truly learn all the concepts presented, but that learning is a very individual process. If you can absorb the information that quickly, then by all means, power ahead. :)

6:07 Is it pronounced ser-Vee-yet-as? or ser-Bee-yet-as? Sorry if the question seems factitious, but I'm genuinely asking

V is often pronounced like a soft B as in Ben in Spanish. Saying that, whether or not it sounds more like a V or a B seems to vary by region and word.

Qroo you said “allí” means further but it sounds just like “ahi”. I thought further was “ata”. Like “over there”

There is ahí, allí and allá. The h is silent on that first one. It means there but closer than allí. Alli and allá mean the same thing and the choice differs by region/country. Verbs of motion tend to use allá.
