Simply amazed. I have finally understood the concept of values and colors. I finally understand (anatomically speaking) you don't draw eye's, nose's, hair and ears....you use values, colors and shading to define these areas.

Hi John, Some of you may want to know exactly what red, yellow and blue I used. I don't recall, seriously, because it's very unimportant at this stage. What is important is that in the beginning the student learns to be accepting of any red, yellow or blue and their painting will turn out terrific, if the drawing and values are correct.

All of the comments echo what i have found. There are lots of artists that share their expertise but very few are great teachers. I wish I had found you when I was just beginning. I started with painting a lily and was frustrated to tears as I could not understand water/paint in the paper/brush and all the values. Way above me and no one to teach. Even now after 3 years, i have much to learn from you. Thank you!!

Hi, Stan. I am really fascinated by your watercolor classes. These videos are fantastic. Probably the best lessons on watercolour on youtube. Thank you so much for doing them. One question, your paints seem so thick and vibrant, is that just something simple like getting lots of pigment on the brush or is it due to a superior quality paint you're using? (I have cotman in tubes at the moment and can't get that thick, "gloopy" look to them.. they end up looking very watery and washed out.) Tnx :)

Glad my lessons are helpful David. When I teach I usually notice that most of my students paint, in their palette, is somewhat hard. I tell my students that one must always have freshly squeezed out paint (of the colors one plans on using) before doing a painting. So in my palette in the video David, that paint was freshly squeezed onto my palette...as soft as toothpaste..that what we want.

Stan Miller makes sense. I never use up all the paint I squeeze out so try not waste it and use it the next time. Of course by then it's hard and difficult to get lots on my brush. Thanks for the reply. :-)

You are a great demo teacher. It's tricky , but you do it excellently. And you can talk non-stop thru it ! 😆 Bob Ross did it, but that seemed more like musical accompaniment. You're actually giving instructions as you do it. And I guess it's also easier to make an obvious mess in a portrait than in a landscape whilst giving a demo.

Teaching to paint what we see with values rather than trying to work the whole image is revolutionary for me. My question is on all the previous demonstrations we worked in light value colors and then washed over in the dark colors. Going in the reverse seems much harder to me because there are finer details rather than big blocks of lighter values. Is it harder to draw in the details with dark colors first?

You might want to watch all of my youtube lessons. In many of the lessons I work from light to dark. Each painting, depending on your goals, requires a different approach.

sthom4bad never used pans, never had any interest in that approach, I like soft paint squeezed out of a tube.

Dad? Lol. I have always loved watercolor but stayed away from it, why....? Good question. When ever I play around w watercolor I have decent results. I feel less enthusiastic about the results then most others. However recently I met an old timer who has gotten my creative side very active, and it’s time to learn. I’ve been watching your videos and find myself keep saying just one more, etc. Thank you for these videos, while I can draw I’ve always had a problem with color, not so much value. You’ve made it clear to me that they go hand in hand in importance. I am now your student, I have(at least I’m trying too)abandoned my original theory of just blasting through and now consider myself a work of art in beginning stages, with these videos I am gaining confidence that my desire to be a masterpiece is all n due time.

I use a number of 1 inch flat brushes, some of them very inexpensive and synthetic. This 1 inch brush is a Connoisseur 107, part natural, part synthetic. Remember, the brush is one of the least important things in this video, just a decent $5 flat brush should work.

How are you cleaning the brush that well that fast? Just water and wiping on a towel? Thanks in advance Stan!

One only needs a really clean brush when painting very light and bright colors. In this painting I can adequately clean the brush quickly by pushing the brush to the very bottom of my water container, pressing it into the bottom 2 or 3 times to loosen up the pigments, then I brush the brush clean over my sponge, next to the water container. This cleans most of the previous color out...in about 5 seconds or so.

This is an excellent exercise for getting rid of the 'fear of colour', I was pretty comfortable with grey-scale painting in watercolour, but making the jump to colour was scary and I'd mess up in the process of worrying about hues, temperature and saturation. Nowadays, if I find difficulty in starting, I'll do a quick sketch that emulates this exercise.

would it be fair to say that the difficulty scales with size of the value shapes? for instance, the more difficult, the smaller the value shapes are and the easier the larger the value shapes? or am i off base?

Exactly. The same principles are applied to all parts of the painting, but the smaller parts are more difficult to get right...primarily because they are so small and difficult to see.

Red is Alizarin Red?, Blue is Ultramarine or any other? and yellow is lemon or any other? wolud you please let me know the exact colours?...thank you very much

Color is very unimportant. Cadmium red, Alizarin Crimson, Winsor Red...and strong red will work. Thalo blue, Prussian blue, Winsor Blue...and strong blue. Ultramarine is ok...but not great...it's not a strong blue. Lemon yellow, hansa yellow, cadmium yellow all would work. But nearly all the other colors are not strong red, blue and yellows...you want strong, powerful, red, blue and yellows.
