Күн бұрын

This video is about Coordinating Conjunctions. Conjunctions are joiners, words that connect parts of a sentence. There are three types: coordinating, subordinating and correlative. In this mini-lesson, Mr. P./Marc will talk about the coordinating ones. He will be using simple sentences to get a better understanding of them.
The lesson is mainly designated for elementary students who wish to study or review English grammar and vocabulary. However, it would also help students who are at an advanced level and wish to brush up on English grammar.
Mr. P. is a Canadian English Teacher/Coach from Toronto, Canada, who has been teaching English since 1997. He is a certified English teacher specializing in EFL, ESL, TOESL, TOEFL, #IELTS, KET, PET, CAE, FCE, and CPE. He taught English to adults in Rome for 20 years and became an Honorary Fellow at UNITELMA Sapienza University in Rome in 2015.

Mr. Marc.....I always miss understand with the simple sentence and the compound sentence. because one has the conjunction without comma, the other one has the conjunction with the comma. if one clause in the compound sentence has the pronoun, can that clause count as an independent clause or a simple sentence???

Please I have question, All these sentences have been used comma without coordinating conjunction. These sentences I cited from email I have received from yahoo new , so it must be corrected. Please , can you tell us what the excuses here? 1- A San Diego grand jury indicted the Hunters for allegedly using campaign accounts to pay for their children's private school tuition, lavish travel including restaurant meals that frequently cost hundreds of dollars. 2-The indictment alleges the Hunters lied about how the money was spent, with the couple saying it went to charity or campaign events when prosecutors said it was really used for groceries, restaurant meals and clothing. 3-Hunter appeared to blame his wife for the violations in an interview with Fox News last year, saying he gave Margaret power of attorney when he was deployed to Iraq as a marine in 2003, and that she oversaw his campaign finances. Thanks

Mr. Marc......... I read kids books in the Library, and why I saw sentences in the book sometime begin with a coordinating conjunction. Can you explain for me a little big about this issue?? Will the grammar still correct or not for this type of sentence? I have asked you about this problem before in the below comment, but you didn't respond me yet so I ask you one more time for it.
@Englishing
@Englishing 4 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry I did not read your comment. Sometimes it is correct to start sentences. The reason goes beyond a teacher's answer. There is no reason. However, it is correct "sometimes" to start a sentence with a coordinating conjunction but it depends on the case. All the best to you. Please share

The only time I've ever heard anyone use "for" or "yet" or "nor" as conjunctions is in this lesson. If "for" means "because," why not say "because?" Any native speaker would have said "She didn't believe and neither did the class." Or if you want to be very strictly pedantically correct, "Neither she nor the class believed me." Also, how can two parts of a sentence be equal? We can't emphasise two parts of a sentence. We always emphasise the part at the end. The difference between "I was sick so I didn't go" and "I didn't go because I was sick" is that the first sentence emphasises not going and the second emphasises sickness. And you NEVER put a comma before "and." Apart from that, the lesson was OK.
@Englishing
@Englishing 6 жыл бұрын
This is "your opinion" and it's quite acceptable, however you know that English has a lot of exceptions to GENERAL RULES. Your comment " any native speaker would have said....", was an exaggerating way of generalizing a "category", since I am a native speaker and I use other forms. You should be aware that English is not "only" spoken in the UK or the US. There are a variety of ways "native speakers" use the English language. Regarding a COMMA before AND.... When a coordinating conjunction is used to connect two independent clauses, a comma is always used. Examples: I hit my brother with a stick, and he cried. The rain stopped, and the sun came out again. Should I eat dinner, or should I play a game?
