Accidentally found this video 4 days ago while searching ukulele tutorials. Damn. Why have I been wasting my time mucking about with the uke during stay in place, when I can't properly bar without muting a string or two, and jumbling fingers into tight fret spaces? I mean I haven't played a clean B minor yet. Watched a few more tutorials of yours, and bought a CBG in the morning. Just arrived today. It's beautiful. Already have one of your finger pick tutorials nearly down (G, D-g, G, g, D), feels natural, just not consistent over time yet. Been over 40 years since I played an instrument, trombone in grade school, but I already feel I can be competent enough to get some enjoyment learning a few songs to play, cheers for the inspiration. One question. Not entirely happy with the slide that came w/ CBG. On the Stubby site, there are 2 trios of slides. In S/M and M/L. I feel I'm likely a Med, but will probably use my pinkie mostly. Should I err down in size, or up? My pinkie's about 3" in circumference, middle finger about 3 1/2".

Hey Shane greetings from Manchester England. I love your vids/tutorials......................can you do more song tutorials. Like ‘Enter Sandman’ by Metallica or maybe some Pink Floyd. Keep up the great work your channel is my number one ‘go to’ for ALL things CBG. You and your stay safe and healthy. Because of your channel and you (not complaining). I am building/experimenting with my first CGB (trying out different PUP’s etc) and am planning a one string and two string diddly bows next..........A massive THANK YOU

Thank you shane, I'm sorry I'm barely learning about you and cgbs, I've learned so much and miss playing guitar. I've built me a 3 string guitar from an old cigar box that was given to me. I'm hooked! And subscribed! You make it easy for sure. I'm 45 haven't played guitar in 8 years but with 3 string I play everyday, hopes to one day meet you and be good enough to jam with you! God bless

Thanks, dude! Had this little cheap fretless 3-string CBG that I picked up for $35-40 at a Half-Priced Books store last year or so and this is the easiest online lesson I've found... that actually sounds GOOD on it to boot! I've been playing some pretty simple rhythmic blues on it but nothing sounding like this! :)
@ShaneSpeal6 жыл бұрын
Glad to give you some inspiration! BTW, those bookstore cigar box guitars are pretty rough. You'll get much better sound out of it if you replace the cheap Chinese strings with the A,D & G strings from a pack of acoustic strings. Better yet, build your own cigar box guitar from an actual wooden cigar box and you'll be amazed at the sound. :)
@jamesanthony84386 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've noticed that about it and comparing it to the other cheap instruments I've collected around here. It's still a fun little instrument to play around with. Picked up a little Johnson Standard 10 amp for $20 at a local pawn shop that works pretty well with it and have been considering putting another $20 into a Danelectro D-8 FAB Delay pedal just to have that option as well. I've been thinking about trying my hand at crafting one, but just haven't gotten off my lazy butt to get started on it. It's more fun at the moment to just play around with what I've got. :)

I am 52 yrs old. Never played an instrument in my life. I wouldn't know a musical note if it bit me on the but. I don't remember how I found out about you back in May but I did. You sir have screwed me up bad. I think I have built around 20 CBG's so far. Probably have 6 more started. I still can't play but with your help I am learning. These vids are great. Keep showing the strumming. It's important to us beginners. Thank you for my new addiction. Great job👍

And that is why John Lee was the Godfather of the blues..... Watched documentary on him some years ago, at one point he went to the studio (think it was a studio) to sign some guitars. So he signs a couple John lee hooker...and then he signs one John lee hocker...missed an o....so he just wrote the o in above where it should have been. How much is that axe worth..? It turns out John lee was mostly illiterate according to this documentary. Not on his guitar he wasn't...!! And he had that voice...smokey but gritty...perfection. In a way he was similar to B.B., not in playing style, but in his economy of playing. Nothing fancy, nothing that wasn't needed...The epitome of the blues. Doesn't have to be note perfect and clinical...it just has to sound ..bluesy. In my opinion the only real true blues player today is Seasick Steve, he has a similar swagger to his playing and his songs come from his life riding the trains, as a Hobo....real blues is all about that life experience, hardship and challenges.

Now retired and more time on my hands I am gonna see if I can nail this song the way you play it, so cool. Look forward to your videos, they are brilliant. Best regards Rob (UK)

Shane. You have a new fan here in the UK. Just checking in on all your videos as I recently picked up a 3 string cigar box from a thrift shop, in our town! I couldn't resist snatching it up before anyone else discovered it. Your demonstration videos are a joy. Although I've been playing guitar for years, the simple, clear way you explain the licks, the advice and tips, all given with such enthusiasm make it so easy to follow and pick up. Advancing quite nicely now under your tutelage. Much appreciated. Roger, from the home counties of England.
@ShaneSpeal6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your feedback, Roger. The reason my videos are simplistic is because I never learned to read any kind of music (even TAB). I've just fiddled around with the instrument until it gave me songs. Keep watching. There's a lot more lessons coming!
