Completely agree!! Whenever I am working with firewood I wear gloves. I'd bumped the blade of my saw into my gloves enough times to make them VERY valuable! Heck..I keep a pair of cheap fleece gloves in my 5.11 parka. I've had them for years and I think I paid $5 for them at Target. I've used them in the cold and they've worked well. Great video! Thanks for all your hard work.

Don't forget about merino wool glove lines! I will take a good wool base layer for any system over a synthetic or fleece. Fleece is too thick (relative to its wool thermal counterpart) and just lets too much wind through to be effective over wool and doesn't insulate when wet. I do however completely agree about the Mechanics gloves, they are darn near perfect in every way. I have kept each pair that I have blown out over the past five years and the kill count is 12.

Makes sense, I've destroyed some great gloves by doing hardwork with them. Just doing yardwork I use 2 or 3 different styles. Now I get much more usable life from each pair of gloves. It's really better economically too!

cool video Nutn, love it! I've actually got a pair of mechanix gloves on order from Amazon. What you said about different gloves for different purposes totally resonates w/ my outdoor, hunting, farming and snowboarding experiences. I have a pair of medium fleece gloves that I use for hunting, but a leather/cotton pair (like the ones you hated) that I use for farm chores and others for skiing. I've tried using them out of role and it sucks, they just get ruined! thanks again dude!

You can also use linseed oil to waterproof your leather work gloves, but make sure you DO NOT leave oil soaked rags or paper towels bunched or piled because it will likely spontaneously combust.

I totally agree with your opinion of the Mechanix gloves. I bought a pair of knockoffs about five years ago for auto work, and I was amazed by how well I could feel tools and bolts through the fingertips. On a lark I tried dry-firing my trigger. They immediately became my shooting gloves.

Suggestion for compromising between keeping warm and having the ability to be tactical. You could always wear 2 gloves as in two different gloves. In this configuration you might have a larger warmer glove in your non trigger hand and a smaller more dexterous glove on the other hand. When it gets really cold, you could racks your rifle nose down and put the trigger hand in a hand warmer pocket where it would be rapidly removable while the larger gloved hand begins to swing your rifle into po

I have always used a pair of Pearl Izumi Lobster gloves and a tight, grip textured, Polypropylene liner. This is all cycling gear, but works very well. You wear the liner under the Lobster gloves, which keep your hands toasty, then you just pull off the lobsters, exposing the liners when you need dexterity. I also bring a pair of leather work gloves for heavy tasks. If it is really cold, you can buy your work gloves a size big, and wear the liners under them too.

Good video Nutn! As a Motorcycle rider, I have multiple kinds of gloves I wear when doing that sport. One of the most important things while riding is to feel the controls and what the front tire is doing though the handlebars. Even in Cold New York State, I normally ride from April to the end of November. When riding in the warm I wear racetrack worthy double gauntlet gloves. In the rain/cold Goretex gloves with a faceshield wiper built into the thumb. The heavy cold gloves lose dexterity tho.
@entoptics13 жыл бұрын
Another AWESOME option for dexterity are Motocross gloves. They are considerably better than Mechanix for feel, fit, and grip but probably not as tough. They offer outstanding protection from abrasion with nearly bare hand dexterity. Unless you score some with a half lining of fleece, they offer virtually no warmth though. If you look around, and don't mind weird wizard of oz coloring, they can be had as closeouts for pretty cheap ($6-$10).

Who else would put out a glove systems review? But he is absoultly right about needing different gloves for different tasks, one glove will not work for them all. And I might add that the fleece nose wipers on gloves are life, and nose savers! They are a big selling point for me if I have the option. And yes picking you nose is one of the important tasks that well all must do in life.

@lloydrtr I’m an aircraft maintainer in the USAF, been doing this for years. One HUGE set back with this is your hands sweat soooo bad under them. It almost isn’t worth it because the sweat makes you hands wet and then they freeze.

Good to see some similarities between our glove choices, even the waterproofing method. I agree with some others, there may be some benefit in looking into motocross gloves, etc, depending on how much you really want that knuckle armor or not. There's different levels, like any other type of glove. Hard to believe you haven't done a glove tabletop before. I think you've just addressed it as you've gone along, so it seems second nature, or already built in. Thanks for all you do! Peace.

When it's really cold, I use the Hatch Winter Specialist gloves which are fleece lined and waterproof, although I lose some dexterity.

My favourite glove is the German army gloves, I haven't tried the insulated winter versions but, with a slightly larger size you can fit thin cotton gloves under them. If you have the right size gloves you can use a small cell phone easily, but touch screens on smart phones are more problematic but still some times the leather works ok with the touch screen. They're also flame protected, relatively warm and they cost 1/3 of the mechanix gloves & I havent been able to brake a pair in 2 years.

one thing you can do is put on a pair of latex/rubber gloves (surgical gloves) under the mechanix gloves, it adds a bit of wind breaking. Yes that does not allow your hands to breath but it makes it warmer if you still need the dextarity but are mildly cold. Also there are a couple good companies which make skiing mittens which will fold back and have fingerless gloves under, you will have to find the ones with good closures for barrier when mitten id over fingers though. They do make them!

all of my boots, shoes, gloves, etc are done just like you do. i use mink oil, tho. i make sure they get heated so the leather or goat/deer skin opens up. i may even do a second coating until there is some residue left on the surface. i wipe that off and know that my stuff is good to go. for some reason wool blends work better for me. i skin hates wool so i use silk biker liners under them. i like to use convertable mittens if reaaly cold. nice post!

I like for cold cold weather burton snowboard gloves the AK series comes with liners that are similar to your mechanix or biking gloves. And of course you can wear the main glove without the insert in cold weather like 20-30 degrees the liner only probably from 28 plus and both together at temps below 20. Of course that depends on your personal cold threshold.

I Have a lot of trouble with dexterity while wearing gloves, even with the good mechanics type gloves. I am a carpenter so I also have very tough hands almost like built in gloves. I do have a pair of the Craftsman mechanics gloves they are actually quite good. I just won't go to gloves until my fingers start getting really cold. Another good glove for maximum dexterity is Baseball batters gloves. We used them framing houses long before the mechanics type gloves were invented.

Hey Nutn, dont know if you got any other comments on this but I recently got the Mechanix gloves, same you use, coyote brown and everything, even gottem from Amazon.
