Tonight in Barcelona the technicians and analysts of INEOS Britannia, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Alinghi Red Bull Racing will be having a field day running through perhaps one of the most valuable days for data - the liquid gold of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. A Garbi breeze of around 10-14 knots greeted the teams through the late morning and into the early afternoon but it was a false promise and steadily, ever so gradually, lessened and weakened as the afternoon wore on.

I’m reminded of last cup. Same early predictions. Speed makes a difference however LR held off ETNZ through sailing tactics though it’s accepted they were marginally slower. Winning starts and covering will win this cup. Throwing the big boats around on the foils is going to be quite something to see and unimagined 10 years ago.

vanno tutte veloci,credo che sempre piu' la differenza la faranno le partenze e chi fara' meno errori nello scegliere dove bordeggiare...Speriamo che allunghino e allarghino i campi di gara altrimenti sara' come far girare delle F1 nel cortile di casa...

maybe I'm wrong but for what I've seen on the water AM and LR seems the most stable in fligth and generally speaking most stable means more speed (not always the case but.. quite true in many situations) other teams seems to struggle more on boat controls. Of course these are the first shots the situation may be only an impression and for sure we wil see many things changing ...

I want to know what upgrades each team is holding back.... be fascinating to know. I'll bet in the final 30 days, we'll start to see some new tech - too late for other teams to copy. I'm also wondering if the LV winner will make changes between the LV and the cup itself.... I understand that the cup dates are supposed to be a knot or two less than during the LV.....but who knows.!?

I hope you're not suggesting deliberate slowdowns. Someone else mentioned that recently. Why would anyone do that? What purpose does it serve to train slowly when the primary objective is to sail fast?? Seems counterproductive and self-defeating.

@@jamesaron1967 It's used in Formula 1. Sometimes you have i.e. a technical innovation that you keep hidden, by not revealing true performance, The later they find out the harder it is for the opposition to copy or adjust.

Io temo che Luna R abbia problemi. Sicuramente le aspettative sono state disattese. Non va così veloce come si aspettavano. Hanno problemi di stabilità che dovranno risolvere. Poi c’è il grosso tema che scarroccia molto. Mi dicono che potrebbe essere il timone o, cosa più grave, un problema progettuale dello scafo. Io spero tanto di sbagliare, perché speravo fosse la volta buona per portare a casa la Tazza

Sei presente tutti i giorni in mare a Barcellona come velista di esperienza e hai una conoscenza specifica di vela con foils , hai a disposizione la telemetria,o conoscenze dirette all' interno del team? Se non è così comincia a guardare le regate di L R della precedente coppa America e passa un po' di tempo diversamente dal postare opinioni poco supportate......poi vedremo se i fatti ti daranno ragione in futuro

Sopratutto dalle interviste si capisce ciò che dico. Guardatevele, osservate le facce e le risposte alle domande scomode. Addirittura qualche intervistato ( ad esempio Umberto Molineris Trimmer e Flight controller) chiede di cambiare domanda quando gli chiedono come cambia lo scarroccio rispetto ad avere uno o due flap dei foil. Posso portare altri esempi. Detto questo sono un appassionato viscerale di LR . sono solo preoccupato. Molto preoccupato. Poi se vi dove arrabbiare per così poco mi spiace. Cerco solo delle risposte che non arrivano. Nessuno ancora competente, io non lo sono, che mi rassicuri. Ma guardate le facce prima del varo e dopo le prime navigazioni. Sono frustrati. The faster those boats, the more boring for spectators interested in sailing. Manœuvre barely play a role anymore. Just food for TV viewers not understanding principles of saili racing. Even the kiwis are working on a model without foils for the next edition if they win! What a waste!

I would agree with your first statement. I would qualify your second. Britannia looks bulky, but Luna Rosa looks very svelte. I think Alinghi/Red Bull also looks fast. Orient Express is the elephant in the room since its design is identical to NZ. It is going to be a fascinating few months.

This is the first time in the footage that Ineos have looked smooth without the rocking back and forth that seems to have affected them to date....

Hull design is important but not the only deciding factor when it comes to speed American magic might be faster in a straight leg in the upper wind limits(they were in Auckland) but they were a lot slower in the tacks and turns a well rounded package will be the winner imho.
