In 2018 I found bluegrass and started learning a lot about it. Avoiding this song thinking it was impossible to play... Well, I can play this 100% of the time at 50% speed and I'm not kidding, it's my favorite achievement on guitar in my 20 years of playing. Thanks Marcel!

It's a huge accomplishment for any guitarist. I've been at it a couple decades on the ol gitfiddle myself. Songs like these for me require the attention I used to give to songs . I started this one once and will attempt it again. If you are interested in a cool piece that I've enjoyed playing for awhile check out the instrumental version of man of constant sorrow. Love seeing such good comments on here.

Dude I've been playing a decent amount of time and been all over KZbin and took private lessons... the way you broke this down was the best I've ever seen. Really professional graphics with the tab and then looking at scales; I loved when you said let's look at how he's seeing the neck. Whether it's using the caged system or whatever the mind visual on the neck is everything and man this is just awesome. This kinda explanation would save so many new guitar players months of trying to figure out the scale/chord/ triad game. Mad respect man

Start with watching the blues history on KZbin. Get yourself some Delta Blues influence and see how it's developed. And then I'd focus on Chet Atkins style fingerpicking to be honest. Anyone can use a pick. Fingerpicking takes skill and alot of practice and coordination.
@Blackeyedbeaver
@Blackeyedbeaver 2 жыл бұрын
Been playing since '85 and only got into bluegrass around 2013 although I was exposed to a few standards because of my Phish obsession. If you're a jam player (like I am) some of these runs and phrases can work in a rock setting. Aside from that? These bluegrass pickers are just amazing. Blows me a way far more than the sweep pickers and finger tappers although all techniques are useful. But yeah, I came to this WAAAY late too.

So I'm a 30-year long advanced player with my own small time lesson channel (which doesn't even compare to how well thought out your lessons are). This past week I've discovered Billy Strings and have decided that I love Bluegrass. It's funny how much trouble this song is giving me. I'm very thankful for your lesson and have learned it and note for note. However I can't even get up to 95% speed. My brain collapses. Lol. I'm just not used to playing in these kind of scale progressions. I'm officially a big fan of yours and want to learn as much as I can about bluegrass. I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time on your channel. 👍

Thanks for this one Marcel!! Playing blueridge cabin home with my band and finding I can't quite make it work like tony, so I don things and subbed things that are more me. More than likely will take these ideas and use them some way that will work : On another note - took the "continueous stream" idea and put it to a metronome ladder. 60 80 100 110 bmp to improve the improvised soloing! Thanks for all you do!

That's the way to do it! Most of this stuff is worth dissecting and incorporating into your own playing piecemeal. Learning the full break and parroting it back wholesale is a little too robot for me. Glad those improv exercises are finding you well too. Snag some of the small phrases from these breaks and incorporate them!

@@LessonsWithMarcel You know what it is, - learning a solo gives a context to the licks. And makes it faster and easier to hear where it fits, and easier to incorporate into a wider variety of music Verses - (although I like the vids) learning 10 advanced licks, and then trying to figure out where to put them. At least for me any way! You looked like you were having fun with this one anyway!!!
