I'm not from the south. I didn't grow up with bluegrass. I don't come from this world of music. I'm a guy from New York City who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s listening to rap and hip hop mainly with some heavy metal. But I was exposed to banjo and fiddle music when I lived in Massachusetts where I witnessed a banjo and fiddle contest for the first time and this was the song that they played to end the festival. Then I found out about Earl Scruggs and this is the first song I've ever heard from him. And for a guy who's 45 years old now discovering who they are oh my God these guys are phenomenal and I have a great appreciation and respect for this genre of music.

Go watch the movie Bonnie and Clyde with Faye Dunnaway and Warren Beatty. The banjo tune you will hear during the chase scene is THE most famous banjo tune in history. It's called Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Written and performed by Earl Scruggs. I'll lay odds you heard it at that bluegrass contest. Anywhere there is a banjo, that song will be played. I think it's the law. Even comedian, SNL and movie star, Steve Martin plays it.

In June 1953, Martha White Mills became the sponsor for Flatt and Scruggs on WSM’s daily,early-morning radio broadcast where they performed until September 1954. They then moved to Crewe, Virginia, for a weekday radio performance. They continued their WSM Martha White shows by recording them on tape. “We were the first in country music to have a syndicated TV program,” said Earl. With the Pet Milk Company as a co-sponsor with Martha White, they were seen on more than forty television stations.

How old were you when he told you that? Its an old appalachian saying. They use to rub salt on their hunting dogs to keep off ticks. Since salt was limited and pricey, it was used mostly on their favorite dog. So the salty dog was the favorite of the pack. The saying became known for asking a girl to be a lover. He might have told you the soda pop tale if you were very young.
