I can't wait to see this documentary! I had the absolute privilege of meeting Dr. Shirley in my university years. I'm a concert classical and jazz pianist. One of the greatest pianists who ever lived. Such a unique figure in the music world. I love how he so effortlessly interweaved classical themes into jazz standards. I'm dying to play Duke Ellington's New World A Comin' .. which Shirley debuted with Duke back in 55. I hope this documentary movie will be available for streaming and/or purchase.

What a special, gifted man who had to endure so much from an ignorantly conditioned world. His unlikely friendship with Tony Vallelonga (i.e.- Green Book movie) was a very moving, heartwarming story. I really want to thank both the families for sharing this precious story with the world. We're all richer for it!

The movie was good in typical Hollywood-style, entertaining, but not knowing how accurate it was. I did not know of his existence till I saw the movie. Want to watch that documentary now, to hear it in his own words.

Damn, he seems so much more extroverted and light-hearted than how Mahershala portrayed, though I did like his acting. Perhaps he had a change of personality as the years went on or something. Either way, this documentary looks great!

Could be the age that soften him up as well as the reduction of his alcohol consuming played role for his personality in the 60s and before his death.

I think he was trying to really portray the man's dignity as well, that way he held himself. But also when he was drunk in the movie I noticed he's more like he is in this interview.

Such a big influence on music, I seen riffs of different pieces in lots of music for such a span of years in different pueces and performances. Thank you for your amazing contributions. I remember discovering the music, it myst be over 20 years ago now, i use to mix in pieces, switchingvup the tympo into my mixes, was a blast watching people trying to figer out the music. 😘 Dee Jay Donnie D ❤
