The idea that an algorithm can show me what I want to see when I’m actively stuck in a loop of scrolling because I literally don’t know what I want to see is completely silly. It’s constructed to keep me in that loop. If I got what I wanted and felt satisfied, I wouldn’t still be scrolling.

I was thinking about this earlier today. I really hate all this new 'algorithm' stuff, from youtube recommends to social media feeds and even "windows suggested apps/files". They say it's "trying to guess what you want next", but what it does is take away all agency and proactivity from the user. They don't want you to sit down at your computer and think "hmm, now what should I do?" It wants to step in and tell you what to do.
@LinkardКүн бұрын
Yep ! They don't want you to do any thinking. They want you to outsource your thinking to their services, so that you rely on them to... Think, basically. Or rather, to exist, but without thinking. They want you to react, not think.

Never forget that the oligarchs WANT you to be doomer about the state of things. The billionaires WANT you to feel like there's nothing you can do, so that the algorithm can do the thinking for you. I fully agree with almost everything in this video, but I really think everyone misunderstands the Subscribe button. It adds that channel to your Subscriptions tab, where you can see every video uploaded by the channels you subscribe to, chronologically. I do agree that the notifications are inconsistent at best, but you can easily go through your subscriptions by not exclusively browsing your Home feed. Additionally, I’m not a paid shill, but I am a shill for Kagi. It’s a paid search engine, and it’s absolutely incredible. It does a fantastic job of labeling listicles and AI-generated slop, and you can even block certain websites from showing up in your results, which directly impacts the quality of everyone’s results. It’s a crazy idea to pay for search, but it’s seriously just that good.
@LinkardКүн бұрын
I do partially agree, I talk about it in a part I actually cut from the video, I'll copy paste that part of the script here : "And yes, there is the subscriber tab, but if you’re like me, you’re subscribed to way too many channels, because subscribing became a lot less important than it used to be, so you subscribed way more often. Because subscribing to someone doesn’t mean their videos will pop up for you, and not subscribing doesn’t mean you won’t be shown their videos. I tried using my subscriber tab for weeks, but ultimately I just couldn’t do it. I spent weeks unsubscribing from people and it was still a lot less helpful than the home tab" And Kagi sounds interesting. Definitely expensive, but interesting !

I recently rejoined an old website that I used to use when I was younger and hasn't changed much from its inception as basically Newgrounds for kids. The culture on the site has definitely changed and it has a rudimentary algorithm mostly for showing what the community is loving/favoriting (basically a public bookmark) but a lot of it still feels very old. It's very cool that you can still find a lot of the really old creators' classic projects and rewatch/replay them to this day, so it feels more ancient in ways than it really is.

2:44 "modern KZbin has a very strong far right bias" I don't think that's true. Conservatives will say that social media is overwhelmingly Liberal and Liberals will say social media is overwhelmingly Conservative. An algorithm that wants to make you angry could make it seem like you're the minority and the platform is against your side. What someone should do is make a new account that is "far right" and one that is "far left" and see which videos they get served. Or maybe run a poll, "Do you feel like you're in the political/social minority on social media?"

I recommend this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGSahqF6lryAhKssi=s5Mz0fkzrFWeG9qG Not as an ultimate source or “checkmate” or “gotcha” but just as one example of how youtube shorts will recommend far-right content, or at least begin the pipeline, when left to its own devices. This video factors in location, using several different cities around the USA to rerun the experiment and getting vastly different results depending on the political tendencies of a given city.

Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment ! I very much disagree, from experiments I've seen and from personal experience with my main and secondary accounts.
