I always take a cautious approach. I never believe the hype, it's funny though, bcz when I have hype about a title I did like I would want the public to believe it. But then I would want them to believe me when I don't like a title as well. Also, I don't normally keep up with popular titles. I like to find books folks aren't talking about.

Any book benefits from hype - but should we fall for mere marketing? Generally, those books that have been hyped I have not liked. None of the books I do like tend to be hyped. Ever.

Wow. Wonder if you are the exception or just maybe your book tastes are different from the norm far greater than most. Not that there is anything wrong with it - didn’t mean to quote Seinfeld there btw.

Ok, know this will surprise some folks, especially on booktube but here goes nothing. Overhyped…..Project Hail Mary. Really expected to love this one buttttt for reasons wont specify for times sake….disappointing dnf. Lonesome Dove, years and years of hype, never bought it, but five stars isnt good enough for this, the best western of all time. Finally, Stephen King. Yes, i loved many, not all, of his older works but hes lost me thr last 20 odd years or so. I think hes just not worth the hype, especially what he gets from booktubers. Dont care much for the dude either, but still love his older works.

Even though I loved Project Hail Mary and most of King’s works, I can totally see how you would feel differently about them. And you are far from alone on your takes. Both are very Hyped up and I am one who hypes both a lot. Exactly, why I thought this topic was worth the time to do a video…I am interested in how Lonesome Dove pans out for me after I read it. Great feedback as always!

Tread lightly on hype. Same issue for me with sword through water. Maybe wrong time but couldn’t do it. Go more by book tubers I trust …Kevin😂❤ I have s few I trust. Marketing isn’t my fave recommendation

I’ve really only read a few books now directly from hype and thus far they’ve lived up to it (Catch 22 and Wind in the Willows), so I’d say it helps me get excited and have a good mindset towards it as I start. Plenty more “hype” books on the TBR so probably will have to revisit in a few months and rethink. Also finding sources you relate to and trust (such as your channel) makes the hype more friendly and less disappointing if it’s not a perfect 5/5.

That is good that you have had a good experience from a few hyped books. And like you, I also like the excitement of possibly really connecting with a book. Glad my channel has been helpful!

I’m not sure I know enough to be affected by hype. However, there have been a few that were hyped: 1. Twilight - hated it 2. Harry Potter - not for me 3. Joe Abercrombie books - not a fan 4. Mistborn - Absolutely loved it 5. Heat 2 - really didn’t like it 6. The Secret History - didn’t like it 7. The Hate You Give - great book So it is sort of hit or miss. I think that hype typically doesn’t affect whether or not I really liked the book. However, hype will absolutely affect whether or not I read a book in the first place. Hype acts like advertising in that case.

I tend not to believe all the hype unless the premise is something I would normally be drawn to anyway. In the past, my raised expectations have been shattered after reading some hyped books but in contrast, there have been those I absolutely loved (ie The Count of Monte Cristo). I guess TCOMC shouldn't have been a surprise since it has had more than a century of hype! 😄 The Silverblood Promise is an example of a new book that had a lot of publicity on booktube and turned out to be tremendous for me as well.

I try to not go with hype, I just go with what sounds interesting to me. Now if it gets hyped up by a booktuber that aligns with the books I like then I might give it more of a look.

i think most times it sorta does more harm but sometimes even if i dont like it as much as most people i can still take something good or interesting out of it. thats surprising to hear about neromancer that is one i was curious about lol
