Watching this was brilliant. I grew up not far from Queenstown in New Zealand where we rode our bikes (we had BMX's) through the mountains and forests. Long before Mountain biking was a thing. I hike and climb and have done for many years. In-fact I often hike the mountain bike tracks around Australia where we now live. But I never got on a bike since being that kid. After watching a few of these videos, I am going to buy some bikes for our family. Your videos have just influenced me hugely. It is going to be quite the investment. But I wanted to say thanks, and keep these videos coming.

I second Phil on heat and guide brakes! Last summer in the SE US I had three different sets. They all did the same. As you were using the brakes the leveruould start to return a little slowly at first and then almost stick. All sets were new and fresh bleeds were done to try to correct the issue. Not confidence inspiring. But I was told they resourced the seals and SRAM may have solved the problem. I use another company's brakes.

I have had 3 Guide brakes that lock up in the sun above about 85 degrees. They know of the problem at SRAM and will send replacements. Problem is supposed to be fixed in the newer ones. Guide Ultimates that they sent work great. If they do lock up, go into the shade and squirt water on the lever reservoirs fluid area and they should slowly release. The diameter of the plastic pistons inside was a bit too big in the early ones and when they expanded in the heat they got stuck. Great riding BTW.
@bkxc7 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude!
@bigkiv477 жыл бұрын
Yep...had a set of Guides RS and they were great brakes...until the heat set in... left the bike on the car bike rack for a couple of hours...in the sun...and had only no movement in the levers when I went to ride that afternoon... was a very common problem here in Australias summer... so now have a set of Shimano Zees...went throught the whole summer without any problems...shimano brakes for the win

Almost had the same thing happen to me right on the maiden voyage on my SB6. Didn't properly secure the front arm over the front tire. When we were close to the trail, my buddy behind me started honking like hell. I looked at my rea view mirror and my bike was gone!! Thankfully the rear tire was strapped in secure enough that that front of the bike that had slid off the rack didnt touch the road.

Cool video, and sucks about the bars. I'm guessing you're going to miss the carbon bars not only for weight, but also for the "ride warming" that they give. I can tell it helps with arm fatigue and it deadens chatter. Also...discouraging news from the viewers about the Guide brakes. Ultimates came on my Patrol, and I didn't have any issues here in Arkansas during August. I had EXACTLY the same issues outlined here with Avid 9's previously, so now I'm concerned. I have XT's on my Scout, and admittedly they are very reliable, but they don't modulate quite as well as the Ultimates....more "on/off" feel to the XT's. When I go from Patrol (Guide Ultimates) to Scout (XT's)....I almost throw myself off the bike a few times before I adjust!
