I have been knee deep, or face first, in many books over the last few months learning and researching all what it really means to be a Classical educator and how to implement that in my homeschool. Let's talk through some of what I have come to and I am also sharing a fun book haul!

I love the Genevieve Foster hardbacks! We do a mixture of AO and Neoclassical. We follow the AO rotation for Shakespeare, Plutarch, artist study, composer, poetry, nature study, and geography. We also add a couple of the recommended books. For history, science and language arts we go for neoclassical publishers like Classical Academic Press and The well Trained Mind.

I find that Classical Academic Press gives me the best of both worlds. I highly recommend their curriculum.

I didn’t know of the 2 types of classical education!!! We fell into the classical education model!!! We do use a mix of methods of learning tho!!! My older kids are learning Ancient Greek and Roman traditions and Gods!!! We use the CC songs, even tho we aren’t in a community!!! We’ve gone on rabbit trails with the timeline song!!! I’m reading the well trained mind!!!

Very interesting! Can you explain more about what the difference is in CC versus what you’re leaning toward and what this will look like in your homeschool?

CC being neo classical is based on a trivium ages&stages view because of it’s foundation coming from the Dorothy Sayers “Lost Tools of Learning” essay. Lots of memory work without context, which I’ve tried my best to add in for my kids over the years. With a classical tradition/ or Charlotte Mason approach it’s more literature centric and your giving your kids a feast of ideas to dig into and the the time for them to truly wrestle with those ideas. I still standby the use of memorization, but my heart is leaning in to have my kids memorizing more scripture, catechism, poetry, hymns vs. subject “memory pegs”, which we have done but on a smaller scale than my heart desires. These are just a few points we are wrestling with. To learn more about each, I’d recommend reading The Well Trained Mind or The Core & The Question and compare what you read to Charlotte Masons writings/her philosophy. I have enjoyed reading “For The Children’s Sake”, In Vital Harmony”, and “Consider This”… I have a few more books in my list I want to read and I may share more in an upcoming video.

Just curious, are y’all going to continue with CC? We are a CC family as well, but I’ve been drawn to Charlotte Mason lately and am considering adding AO as well. 😊

As far as I’ve gotten so far is knowing that we are continuing this year with CC, my husband and I are still prayerfully working through what our homeschool will look like after the school year.
