I have no time for a company who gatekeeps to feel superior. Why people put up with it from Hermes but never would from other companies, I’ll never know. Reminds me of a story- my Dad, who owned a company and could very much afford a new car, went to a dealership after work in his worn out, blue collar clothes. Nobody would give him the time of day, and he walked out and never looked back. It’s like the scene in Pretty Woman. It costs us nothing to treat people equally.

I have done the exact same as your dad, Saab dealership in UK. There were 4-5 staff chatting at a desk, we were the only ones in the dealership and nobody would make eye contact for us to even wave them over. Walked out. Vowed never to buy that brand and was happy they ceased trading. Also got the surreptitious ‘once over’ when buying my current car but she corrected herself quickly so gave her the benefit of the doubt. It’s a nightmare!

I just experienced the same in New York Hermes (Madison Ave) 2 weeks ago. Walked in was sent to a sales associate who already had "a look" on his face of irritation. I started with the bracelets (on the first floor). My daughter actually took a picture of me trying a bracelet on and his facial expression. He rarely made face contact with me or answered my questions. I knew then I was getting the bracelet and leaving. We went to Chanel and Louis Vuitton and had a wonderful experience. It's our money and our purchases are a want not a need. I will happily take my money to someone who wants to give me excellent customer service.

oh no...that sucks! Ugh...so much of our shopping experience really depends on who helps you. I hate that we feel like we can't change sales associates. I was visiting family in NYC...and went to the same boutique as you. I was super intimidated since this was my first time at Hermes. But fortunately I had a really nice associate. Acutally, before I even met w anyone (I wanted to buy a bracelet), my husband and I were offered coffee/drinks. I was really surprised. The lady who helped me was so nice and put me at ease. As she was checking me out w my purchase...I told her I was new to Hermes and didn't know if it was ok...but I was wondering if I could get a perfume sample. She was so great...gave me a lot and also gave my husband some. If you live in NY and ever want to go back, my SA's name was Alla.

I have 5 Hermes Bags. I purchased an Evelyne in 2019 with zero purchase history. For me the pandemic changed everything. The SA who sold me the bag in 2019 would not answer my texts and was super evasive anytime I saw him in store. I met a new wonderful SA and have purchased 4 bags since July 2022 and could have purchased 20. Oh they have bags, yet I have watched them turn away person after person. It’s like we have bags, they are just not for you random person. I love the brand. I definitely think the SA and store director can shape your entire experience and feeling about the brand and the pieces. I have turned away several quota bags and have never ever felt pressured to purchase them because they never felt like me. I think you did the right thing, I would never beg for a bag.

Hermes is a different breed. They want to see brand interest and purchases beyond the bags. Chanel is moving in this direction now as well, with minimum purchases and limits on classics. If you go in and immediately ask for a bag, at Hermès, they are almost always going to say they don’t have it. I believe they also do this when you say any color would be fine, because they are afraid you are a reseller.

Hi Amber. I had the same experience recently at Hermes. Was not professional or customer service friendly at all. Right away I was told no to them having the Evelyne bag. They actually said: “No bags today.” Absolutely seems like a typical way Hermes conducts themselves but makes me wonder if it depends on the location because my previous experience was lovely. I can go on to say right after that I went into Louis Vuitton and was greeted with the most welcoming and professional sales team who after I shared my experience at Hermes said I am always welcome as is anyone walking through their doors.

Honesty is huge to me and if someone can lie to my face, I take that whole heartedly. I am not sure if they work off commission, but someone who lies to you does not deserve the coins you are about to spend or the commission they would earn off your purchase. I also think the exclusivity game is ridiculous. They need to quit “profiling” customers.

it's mostly about the resellers. not just the quota bags but others and evelyn are being sold for astronomical prices, so they have been told not to sell immediately to whoever asks for a bag. but get to know them a little bit better

I have zero Hermes in-store experience, however I have heard of far too many people with the same experience that you described. The feeling that it would leave me with is one of mistrust. It’s bad enough that they feel it’s ok for people to have to prove themselves worthy of shopping with them, but how do you ever trust dealing with people so obviously deceptive. Just not something I’d ever consider putting up with. I’d end up ticking them off anyway because my first out-of-mouth reaction would have been “I thought you said you didn’t have one in stock” and it would have gone downhill from there. I think what it boils down to, is it all depends on how badly you want the bag. Can’t wait to see your birthday video and I think for this time I’d like to see you do the whole haul including you’re a little thing from CHANEL and your order that you’re waiting for them from Hermès

The say no to your first question for a bag because that is all what every reseller wants. They trick Hermès to get the bag. The SA had to filter them out. As you showed your real interest in the brand he showed you the bag.

Oh Amber, I don’t know what’s considered “typical” for Hermes but I can tell you from my personal experience that I’ve always had a really pleasant experience with Hermes. I’ve shopped at 5 different boutiques with various SAs, and whether I bought something or not, I felt I was treated the same regardless. Did you have negative experiences all the other times you shopped at Hermes or was this the only time that felt off? At the end of the day, I say, don’t shop with any SA that ruins the experience for you. You are the one spending money, so if you don’t feel good about, walk away, which you did. 😉

I think you are lucky to get to see the Evelyn bag. My friend wants a Picotin bag. Even she purchased other items in the store. She can't get her hand on the bag. FYI. I live in Melbourne. There is a big population of Chinese live here. Chinese people tend to scoop up all the Hermes bags. If you see the bag u want from Hermes, I suggest buying it. As u won't be so lucky anymore in the future if u really want that bag. I only bought a few items from Hermes. I saw the grooming bag in the store a few months ago. And I said I want that bag and the SA has to ask the manager about me buying it. That is how hard it is for customers who do not spend big on Hermes to get any bag now a day.

Amber, I hope you enjoy your birthday month. I agree with the comment below that COVID changed things. Any SA in Vegas I have for any luxury brand always pretty much pulls thru because I feel they get more stock or they can easily source what I want and ship it to me in Tx. Pre COVID I walked into Hermes in California and they had a plethora of bags on display in all colors and the SA brought them all out for me to try on to help me select the one I liked best to buy. Once COVID hit their stock is rather limited so I do feel it's rather selective. They will say they do not have bags at all, even though they do have the bags in the back. When I do happen to visit a new boutique when I'm on vacation they are a bit reserved, although most often friendly and helpful. Only once in Cancun one of the SAs didn't give me a warm and fuzzy. In FL I visited a boutique asked for a mini evelyne and was told they had no bags. I purchased an item in store and the SA sourced a belt to arrive before I returned home. When I went to pick it up he offered me the mini I wanted, and they offered another lady a Birkin. So they do have the bags. Even my SA that I work with the most, when I tell her I will be in town to visit she will say we have no leather goods, but when I meet her for my appt, she will have something to offer me. I have SAs I work with in a few cities but it's best to really stick with one and be sure you connect with them really well so they will always keep you in mind. We got really lucky with mine 2 years ago (in the midst of the pandemic) when we met her. Right off the bat during our convo my husband asked to be placed on a waitlist for a quota bag, even though I had only bought my Evelyne, and a few days later she called to offer us a Birkin. She actually reached out to me today to offer me a mini 24/24 but I turned it down. BTW, that mini evelyne in black with GHW, lady I would have jumped on that one in a flash. Those don't come easy at all, at least in my experience. If you truly love the brand and appreciate the craftsmanship of a handbag style then don't get discouraged. The perfect bag will come along with a wonderful SA to help you. 🥰

In Atlanta I went to Hermes and NOBODY helped me. I didn't want my first experience to purchase to be there. I was like I am here to spend money. Then I had to travel to San Francisco the following day and had the best SA ever. She made it fun and I told her about my experience in Atlanta. It really depends on the person/SA. I did tell her I am the weird person who may be the only one who doesn't tend to gravitate a Birken or a Kelly (though I like the Picotin, Constance, or maybe even a Mini Kelly). She appreciated that. She was really into the craftsmanships of Hermes. As for your question, yes, it would have bothered me. I believe everybody should be respected regardless if you are able to "afford" a bag or not.

Hi Amber, I totally understand how you feel in this situation. Prior to the pandemic if you had approached the way that you did, the SA would have brought out the Evelyn bag for you right away. However do to the very limited stock since the past two years, I think it is a protocol that all the Hermes SAs would simply decline any bags offer to walk-in clients since they don't have a relationship with the boutique. Simply put it, they want to reserve the bags to their regular customer since there are not enough bags to go around. I hope this experience would not deter you from getting your first Hermes bag. It is hard to be an Hermes SA for the past two years.

Hi Amber, no, nothing you said is silly. If you feel something about any situation you come across pay attention to that. I don't care how "exclusive" any brand is suppose to be, if you treat me bad or try to play me in any way you will NEVER get my hard earned money. None of the Hermes bags are worth making customers feel uncomfortable and lying to them by saying you don't have something in stock when you clearly do; that was completely unnecessary. For those of you who are Hermes fans let the company know that this technique is not cool because if you don't it will just get worse. I believe some of these brands think they are better than the customers that buy from them!!! Great chat video!!

Hi Amber! I've purchased several bags at Hermes, including the garden party, evelyne and double sens. Every time I asked, the SA went directly to the back of the store and brought out a few of each. I do not think this is typical of Hermes. I think you got a less than stellar SA. My experiences were at the King of Prussia Mall and in NYC.

Sorry you did not have the best experience in Hermes but I have heard others with similar stories and not with just bags there. I am not into playing a game or being made to feel bad/ put down making an expensive purchase or really any purchase. But you have to decide if you feel comfortable buying the bag now. I have been like you trying to decide on my bday bag coming up next month and the ones I was looking I could not pull the trigger because they were things I thought I should get and finally my husband asked what would make me the most happy and without hesitation I said the LV Palm springs mini in mono. That is what has just arrived and it makes my heart sing! Now to wait til my bday to use it! Plus you were a great help with my desire for that bag with your reviews/photos so thank you! Amber, I had a similar experience. My 12 yo and I were on a mommy daughter trip to Chicago. We dressed up, she wore her little coach and I had my Chanel with me. (felt like we had to “look” a certain way to shop which is silly…I’m pretty casual at home!) Anyway, walked into Hermes to look at the Evelyne. “We don’t have any.” Ok I want to look at the Pop H necklace in silver. “We only have gold available.” Ok I’ll look at those… (while he looked irritated.) I’d also like to try on some silver bracelets. Not joking, every one he pulled out was like 5” long so were snug on my wrist. Then I asked for a 6.5”. “This is all we have.” So…. we went next door and I bought a Chanel (which was way more $$) and bought my daughter some Chanel beauty. Never again for me. And I’m a successful, put together woman like yourself. But even if I weren’t, nobody deserves to be judged. It was a great discussion with my daughter!

Hermes is typical like that. Sometimes they “feel you out” first. It sucks but sometimes they want to see if you fit their Hermes style too, how serious you are about purchasing, what you could buy first to increase their commission before giving you what you actually want😅. At least in my previous experience and with my SA for years, there are games 😂 Also, maybe people who come in looking for bags only could be resellers…

Customer service is not their goal; sales target is. There’s plenty of people who are willing to play the game and be played. It’s an expensive game pretty much only for those who has a deep pocket. This is the clientele that they want. Customer service is perhaps only applicable to VIP. For now, take it or leave it.

Every H store is so different but no that is not the norm. When I bought my last one it was on full display in a glass case and up for grabs to anyone who walked into the store. I would have been very turned off by that too. Yes a quota bag I get but not an Evelyne. Even though it is one of their "lower" priced bags it is still very expensive and you should have been treated better. I would love see a collective haul!

Completely understand how you feel. I was soured on the Hermes store in Boston in December. I’m not interested in any of the bags but have purchased numerous scarves and bracelets in that store. For some reason, my name was no where in their system. She tried both my phone numbers, name, and email address. Nothing. Not a huge deal but she made me feel like if I’m not in the system obviously I don’t shop there. I also didn’t feel like she knew the product well. I had specific scarves I asked for she had no idea which ones they were nor interested in finding out. For a store with those prices all the SAs should know the products.

I think it’s the Hermes way of rejecting the resellers. My SA told me that there’re random person walk in and request to buy birkin ,Kelly every day. Some got the bag and resell them as soon as they walk out of the boutique and Hermes is trying to avoid that. My advice is go in look for something else like ready to wear, costume jewelry,scarf or belt first then they will ask if you like anything else? They just need to see that you are an end user who love the brand. I saw this happen every time I went to the store. You should not feel bad about them lying to you, you should feel good that the SA is kind of think that you are not a reseller and offer you a bag right away. It’s a good sign to start building a relationship with them.

Like some others said, it’s not something to take personally. It’s not you but Hermès now is just getting harder and they won’t let their bags go easily. They have a big problem with resellers, and while they do have bags, they are still limited since they are not mass produced like other brands. Even with other high demand items, they will lie politely on the availability. It’s typical Hermès. I personally love the brand but if someone takes things like that on a personal level, I would say avoid Hermès, it’s not for the faint of heart for sure. The good thing is that we have plenty of other choices in the luxury world.

I think it depends on the store and the SA as to how it works in Hermes. I have been lucky enough to be offered numerous bags in Hermes and the process is not like other stores. I think the SAs are primed to say no initially to see how serious you are about buying which I know is crazy but that is how it works. Once they get to know you are genuinely interested in the brand they are very different. I think they get a lot of people coming in and trying on bags and not buying so they cut that out and only offer if they think you are serious about buying. It keeps the mystery of the brand alive.

Forget special Amber. How about some common courtesy! It’s not a quota bag. No reason he shouldn’t have shown it to you right away. Do what your gut tells you Amber. Ive never had a bad experience in Hermes, although I dont buy a lot from them. So I think it is SA dependent. Maybe if you still want the bag you go back and work with another SA, maybe closer to home or on another trip. And happy birthday!!! Can’t wait to see what bag you decided on. Whichever way yiu want to do the video is fine but I’m always most interested in the bag.

Purchase history is important to big H. It helps to buy things. Typically they say there are no bags- low or no stock no. Times are changing. It is a game. Sorry you had this experience. Amber, I know exactly what you are talking about. Last summer I made an appointment (was required post Covid) and I wanted to purchase oran sandal but I wanted to try size on. They left me standing outside for 20 minutes! Finally the SA came to unlock the door and I complained and she said they were having a meeting! Um excuse me?! I was pissed but I bought the sandals and a bracelet. I have since bought the jige clutch (on eBay at great price). Honestly, I wouldn’t pay the new price for handbag in Hermes. Just buy preloved, much better deals! I have been in Vegas store and SA’s were quite friendly

I think they’re trying to weed out resellers. People that are just going in to buy a bag & provide to a reseller or flip it themselves. I think once they get the feeling you’re actually shopping for yourself by you looking at other items and mentioning purchasing from other boutiques, they offered you the bag.

He simply wanted to know if you had more money to spend and by mentioning bags from other Houses, he decided you did and especially when he knew you would buy additional things. If you buy a bag from them, they do like it if you choose something else as well in that visit. I’d have called him out on it to be honest but I’m older than you and with that comes bolshiness 😆. His answer would determine if I purchased or not.

I won’t play the Hermes game. I purchased my Evelyne from Fashionphile. I have to say I’ve purchased some small items from the boutique and they’ve always been very nice to me. I’ve never asked for a bag, though.

Most commissions are not on bags. It wasn’t personal, it’s just that Hermes SA. I currently have several bags purchased over a few years with different SAs and they vary with what the amount of spending required. Just know how much you would need to spend with That SA if you desire a quota bag !

I would have been put off by that too and I don’t think I would purchase the bag. For me, I would just constantly think about that experience when I look at the bag, so it would taint it for me. If you can get over it and really want the bag, go for it, but for me I would be over it and cross it off my list. Looking forward to seeing what you pick for your birthday bag!

I don’t spend money in any store that I am not comfortable with the service. You asked if they had the Evelyne and you were told no only to find out later they had the bag. I have had great service with Chanel in neiman marcus but not in the Chanel boutique.. I had to wait outside a store when not one customer was inside.. Bye! We can spend our money where we choose. I won’t play the game! It’s only a bag and there are so many beautiful bags I can purchase without playing the game!

Your experience is consistent with that of others I’ve heard who have sent significant others to ask about a bag instead because men are more likely to be offered a bag (including non quota). It does feel like a game, and I completely agree with you and would feel the same way. The experience in the store is part of buying the bag, and you shouldn’t have to spend your hard earned money on something that leaves a bad taste in your mouth!

Hermes does not like people who come in and just look at their bags and handle it over and over. They have always been exclusive. Hermes is on a different level then most luxury bags. My SA I have had for years tells me they really do not offer any bags unless you have history with them and when I say history it is history with them buying from all different areas. For instance my history was buying household items, clothing items and SLG. Then I was offered a Birkin. I also have an Evelyn and if you like it I would just go back and get the bag just different SA. Don’t let him taint your thoughts on a bag you like. I’m so sorry you had this experience. You are such a doll. Believe me my daughter gets the same treatment and even ignore her but little do they know I do not buy anything unless she likes it. Lol

Definitely the norm as a new customer…established customers can walk in and ask for bags. My best advice to you is to find an SA at the Hermes location you can visit most often. Try purse forums to get a sense for personalities of SAs at that location to see who might work for you, and request an appointment with them next time. If there are other things you like from Hermes (and IMO there’s so much to love) ask for those items first, so they know you are there for more than the bag. Hermes values loyalty and interest in the brand as a whole, since their bags are so popular to begin with. It’s important to shop at one store with one SA. Does that help? The Hermes shopping experience is definitely different, but so much fun and so worth it! I recommend checking out @hayaglamazon’s videos here on YT also.

I have watched many Hermes videos and those frequent Hermes clients have said you cannot ask for bags. If you do their answer will be “they don’t have any right now”. They want clients who are loyal to the brand. Even if it isn’t a quota bag they want clients for long term relationships and not walk in to buy like any department stores. So has your rep got to learn a bit more about you he offered you to see the bag. So he is following protocol. It isn’t you. If you want it then play the game. Their sales strategy is not the same like others, so it isn’t you and he wasn’t doing it only to you. He is doing this to everyone else who comes in and ask for some type of bag.

Hey Amber! I haven’t actually shopped in store at Hermes but I’ve watched a lot of videos and I think this sounds pretty normal for Hermes. The sales associates make almost no commission on bags. Likely he was more willing to sell you that because of the other item you ordered. I also wonder if he maybe offered it because he didn’t want you going to Chanel or LV but that I haven’t heard anyone else experience so not sure.

Knowing Hermes I would not see it as a big deal, otherwise it is better to avoid Hermes at all, I would not purchase then bracelet neither, or close the eyes on this situation and take the bag.

Although this has not been my experience shopping at H, I have heard this happen many times. I really don’t feel one way or another about it. It’s an interesting marketing strategy that works for the brand and it’s what keeps them exclusive, even down to the non quota bags. I wouldn’t take it personally. But if it did bother you enough, I would rethink if Hermes is the brand you want to support.

That's terrible what happened to me you at an Hermès store. I just don't understand why that purse company would treat anybody like that. They must know if it wasn't for the consumer Hermès wouldn't be in the business. It takes all of us to buy their items to keep them in the business. Being dishonest and untruthful to a client to me is poor management. I heard about the so called "Hermès Journey", buying a bunch of items before you can get a berkin or Kelly to me is silly. I have a coins purse I ordered online like you have and I really like it. Would love to go into one of their stores but I'm afraid of how I would be treated. Anyways your a very nice lady and thank you for your videos and time with us!

Although it is a game and not the kindest one, I do understand why they play it. They're protecting the brand from resellers for the most part. I think once he saw your genuine interest in handbags, he knew you were a true customer. I think it keeps the brands value when they're discerning with customers, although it is rude and a bit of trickery.

I have to say, that would have absolutely turned me off. Funny enough, I love my Evelyne but recently put it up for sale...and now I'm glad I did! I know they're just just luxury bags, surely there are more important things in the world, but I do think it matters how the face of a brand treats you - especially one that's charging the kind of prices Hermes is charging. I've heard too many stories like this and they always give me the willies. And as far as your videos, the more the merrier! ;)

I went to hermes last saturday in chicago and i did not have a problem. I like it coz they dont follow me wherever i go. She just said to call her when i need help. I was shocked coz i heard a lot of bad stories experience in hermes store😊

In my opinion I would NOT spend hard earned money on ANY brand or company with service like that. There are too many other amazing brands, with exceptional service, that are more then willing to help from start to finish. The sales men and woman in these luxury stores are the face of the brand, and I think thats unacceptable…if it were me, my money would go somewhere else. You have every right to feel the way you do. I won’t be shopping at Hermes

That’s such a shame that the SA treated you in that manner because the Evelyne bag is wonderful. I would not be okay with that. You should return the item you ordered with that same SA and tell him you are returning because of the way he treated you. I have the mini Evelyne which I purchased pre loved from Fashionphile because I wanted Rouge Grenat and didn’t think it would be easy to get that color. I do love the bag!

I've only purchased from Hermes online and bought belts. But if someone lied to my face I'd be shocked and angry, and it definitely would influence my purchase decision. I'd just wait and purchase at another store if it was something I really wanted. For your birthday, how about a 2 part with your little gifts to yourself and share what you did to celebrate. Then a vlog where you buy the bag and the big reveal in the same video!

One of these snotty sales guys with his head up his own ass pulled this nonsense on me when I was in Goyard in Beverly Hills and I wasn’t standing for it. I just turned around and walked out. I was ready to make a purchase and he pissed me off so much that I went in to Saks, and bought a bag from Prada. It doesn’t matter if they make minimum wage or $800 an hour they should be nice to everybody. Don’t give them your money if you really want the bag that badly buy Preloved

It's a no. People are saying not to take it personally and that it's the nature of the business, but you also work hard for your money and you are a customer. If they only want to service people based on if they are really going to buy something, then they should have people pay for reservations where they can guarantee some type of monetary exchange for their time. No matter what you sell, you are going to have people who look, people who buy, and people who waste the salesperson's time. Now that is the nature of sales.. he probably just thought you weren't going to buy anything and treated you as such. If you really like the bag, try another location and see what happens.

I travel a lot, and I have gone to three different Hermès stores in the last six months. Without fail, every time I have walked into the store, I have been told that they have no bags. I’m pretty sure that if I had walked in wearing my Evelyne, they would have treated me much better, but I walked in with a Louis Vuitton! I have sworn off of them. Personally, I find Louis Vuitton to be so much more interesting and creative and edgy in their designs. I bought two from the Kusama collection and I’m so much happier with them than I am with my Evelyne, which is pretty boring.
