Great tips! Not all of us can afford a juki or aurifil thread or buy unlimited fabric. Retired, fixed income. Kudos to you that can afford those things. Some of us can dream! Lol! You are a great encouragement!

Thanks so much! ❤️ I've been quilting a long time (nearly 27 years), so it helps with making budget quilts. I have a huge stash to pull from. I am trying to think more like someone who maybe doesn't have this type of "collection" so I can help more quilters who are on fixed incomes. ❤️❤️❤️

@@deloresrast8543, I sew on a Brother too. For me it’s about the enjoyment of sewing and not breaking the bank. I don’t sew for out just for my pleasure. If someone in the family wants one I give them away. I shop sales and never pay full price and only use free patterns. I’m thankful for all the sites that give the free patterns.

I love the idea of a flannel sheet for batting! Today I was in Costco and bought a thick soft furry king size blanket ($25.00 US) to use as the backing for two twinsize quilts. I think it will be thick enough to not need batting at all, since the blanket is furry on both sides. So soft for my grandson!

Great idea!! I love it! Tracy from The Sewing Channel just did a sewing hack video on using fleece (I think) where you use a light washable interfacing to stabilize the stretchy fabric. I love the idea of using fleece, but I am concerned with the stretch. Do you have an issue with this? ❤️❤️❤️

When I used a minky fabric piece to back a quilt for a granddaughter, I used a temporary fabric spray adhesive to make the quilt sandwich. It worked fine. I may want to use safety pins with this one, but haven't made my mind up.

Do my best to "shop my stash" first. Use coupons from Joann's if I have to buy additional fabric to complete a project. Even if I don't need prints for a current project,I try to use the 40 / 50% off coupons for basics like rotary blades, big cuts of muslin, batting, or needles. That's going to be a gorgeous quilt!

I love that you are using leftover fabric and recycled (flannel sheet as batting) fabric! I've used old blankets that were in good condition but faded or an ugly color as batting. I also use saved bedding sheets and thrift store sheets as backings. They work great and no seams. Let's keep what we can out of the Landfills! And it's economical. Quilting items are so expensive!!!

Hi Sue! I haven't attached the sashings yet. They are just laid out for the picture. I was supposed to have the entire quilt finished for the video, but time just got away from me. 😬 As for the sheet, yes. I wash it twice in hot water. Who knows what it has seen? 😀

Is there a reason you didn't strip piece your sashing?
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance Жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes. I don’t do it that way because it distorts the size, in my opinion. The sashing can stretch. But you could do it if you want. There are so many ways to make a quilt and we all have our own preferences as to what we want to deal with with, what we are good at, etc. ❤️ Hope this helps!
@karencross1964
@karencross1964 Жыл бұрын
@@SewtheDistance Yes this helps. Is the distortion because the sashing is so narrow, or do you find it distorts on all widths? I'm fairly new to quilting and am excited to see ways to make piecing fast and easy and strip piecing does that. I work from experience ( others, not mine) and will not strip piece the sashing. Thanks
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance Жыл бұрын
@@karencross1964 Welcome to quilting! I love that you are asking these kinds of questions because many quilters, newbies or seasoned, don’t always understand this part. Basically, because fabric has a grain, cross cuts (selvedge to selvedge or edge to edge) are stretchy while straight cuts are not. The best way to understand this is to take a piece of cotton fabric and pull in the different directions. Because we usually use the cross grain to cut strips, it will stretch. Not as much as the bias (diagonal), but still, it will stretch. If you cut it the exact size of the block and sew it to that block, it will keep square with the block, making the block stay the size it is supposed and stabilizing the strip. Gosh, I hope this makes sense! Lol! If you have a scrap block, try measuring and cutting a sashing strip for one side and then try strip piecing the sashing strip on the other side. Now, that said, MANY people strip piece and are find with it. I am not. You just have to figure out your best practices. There is no “wrong” way.

I have been asking around what the cost of getting someone to quilt your quilt with a long armer……
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance 2 жыл бұрын
It is usually priced by the size and what you want as quilting. The cost is usually between 3 cents to 15 cents a square inch. Look to spend at least $100 on a lap-size quilt with a simple overall pattern. There are a quite a few places that do it online where you send your quilt to them and. they send it back. I think Missouri Star is now offering this service. That way you can price it before making the decision. It is a great convenience, but it is very experience, especially when you add it all up with the cost of materials, equipment, and, of course, your time. Hope this helps!
