Thats a one of the first ever revisions of the PS2 hence the PSU facing up. Too risky to work on when its powered on and facing up. Did you adjust the black torx screw on the laser rack as that can adjust height and its VERY sensitive

I did mess with the torx screw but it didn’t help any in this case. I’ve had no luck with most of the laser issues I’ve run into but I’ll keep trying.

From my experience with AliExpress, none of the PS1 lasers I bought worked at all, and the ones I bought for PS2 slim, only 3 work every set of 5 that I buy... I never bought for a PS2 fat, though.

That’s…not very encouraging haha. Have you tried other places? I guess you might have better luck returning a defective laser from amazon or eBay over aliexpress.

@@FixMoreWasteLess hahaha I know I know... I tried from different sellers and checked too the ones I could buy in Amazon/eBay/etc but they all seemed the same as in AliExpress... I doubt there's more than one factory doing them :/ Also yep, had problems trying to return defective lasers over AE so I still had them on my garage waiting for some day to try them again (?) or to throw them XD

I would double check the laser ribbon to make sure it's not torn anywhere and that it is making a proper connection on both sides.

Thanks! I did check and each trace had a good connection across the ribbon. Might try swapping the 400B for a C and go from there.

@@FixMoreWasteLess Yes, it’s also a good idea to test out your laser without the top black plastic cover. You can try putting a disc in it while the top plastic cover is off and check if you can see the red laser project of the disc, should be a dot that you can see from the top side of the disc. I’d isolate the problem to check whether the laser is indeed attempting and failing to read the disc or if the laser itself is not turning on in the first place.

I recently came across a PS2 slim that did not read DVDs but did read CDs. It turned out to be a bad inductor on the board -> L7102 for DVDs or L7101 for CDs. For the original PS2 model, they are L802 for DVDs and L801 for CDs. You can easily locate them using the service manual. If you PS2 does not read CDs nor DVDs at all then it's unlikely for it to be the inductor since chances are very small that both inductors would go bad at the same time.

What kind of inductor did you use? Only spec that i found for it is 4.7uH

@@jormaharo2710 Correct it’s a 4.7uH 2520 (metric), that’s the one I installed as it’s the same exact size though slightly thinner. I also tested the 0805 size and it also fits (4.7uH as well).

Some says we need to recap or at least verify the caps before changing the laser, because they tend to fail as well.

Do you do this as a service? I have 2 slim PS2’s slime both not working properly I would love to get fixed so I can use them again

I have the same issue, with the same model of PS2, but I figured out that the laser assembly is not moving at all. I put the laser all the way to the back and it stays there when the console turns on. Still don’t know the cause of that, I checked all of the fuses on the disc drive board and they were good.

Did you check the ribbon cable attached to the laser? I know on mine that if the connection's bad or loose the assembly won't move.

That one looks good, but the big ribbon cable connecting the whole drive to the motherboard had seen better days. I’ll try to replace that one, but I won’t be able to do it any time soon. Hope I remember to reply on this comment when I do so. Thanks for the input!
