Thanks for taking the time to post this video! There are several of these at our flying field. I see that you have the stock wheels on that beast. For grass runways, I always put bigger wheels on. I don’t care if it doesn’t look scale. I like easy rolling on grass.

I pulled my Apprentice (STS) out of the corner and brought it to work today to fly at lunch. I have a room full of planes like many of us do - but there is always something awesome about this trainer. Loved the video.

Got this as my second plane as well pre-owned with a funky signal orange paint job and had a lot of fun with it until it came down in a bit of a fight with a redkite ... rebuilt, changed the color to white with red and modded to be a tail dragger with bigger wheels for nicer handling on gras, the tail is rebuilt with carbon fibre reinforcements and bigger control surfaces, also added a flight controller and FPV equipment ... soon to get flaps and perhaps a motor/ESC upgrade to 4S to really bring out those STOL vibes. Even on the stock drivetrain it has plenty of power to lift up to 5000mAh, which is the biggest I could find that still physically fits in the battery compartment. Not original like yours anymore but also the one plane I keep coming back to all the time :)

Rainer, those mods sound amazing. This thing would be an excellent bush plane, but as is it is definitely a STOL plane. With the right wind I can get mine off the ground with less than one wheel rotation! Enjoy it as long as you can, and thanks for the support. Cheers.

Wonderful plane! So I have a question? Just started flying again after more than 25 years and flew this plane with the radio it came with all summer. I finally got some other planes and a new NX8 radio and I tried to bind this plane to my NX8 radio, which it appeared to successfully do, but there is no safe? I've tried everything I know and just can't do it! It does the jiggle once the plane is turned on, as it should, but if you lift the plane up and turn it over, no surfaces move, indicating safe is not working. I was able to get the panic button programmed and working, but not safe. I've been flying it without safe, but I really wish I could figure out why I can't get safe working? Any ideas?

Brendan, first thanks for checking out my video. I know I had a hard time setting this plane up at first. When using the NX 8, Safe, intermediate, and advanced mode are assigned to your GEAR channel, which should be a three position switch. I always put my "gyros" on the B switch, you can use what ever you feel comfortable with. In the system menu go to channel assign and put your gear on the switch you would like to use. To test, on the floor, turn the plane on, make sure it is bound, then run it up quickly past 25%. The system should work perfectly when you test the modes out. Yes - That is how I had mine set-up, but I'm not getting SAFE setting it up that way. I was able to get my I button to self level the plane which is great, but I can't get SAFE to work? Any further thoughts? I'm wondering if binding a certain way is relevant? On other planes, after you turn the aircraft on, you remove the bind plug, then bind. Then you assign the switch by toggling with the sticks down and towards center. I could not get the transmitter to recognize the receiver in the same way on the Apprentice when doing this step?

Need advise on the CG. I understand it's 79.0mm back from the leading edge of wing but how far off of the fuselage? The manual doesn't give a dimension. Not sure I should go as close to the fuselage as possible, 1/2" off, 1" off, or what? Does it matter? Thank you

I measure up against the fuse. To be honest, this is a very forgiving plane, and the battery sits in the battery compartment pretty much spot on with a 3200 3s.

I have been learning to fly this past summer on all 3S high wing size planes.....I recently picked up a BNF Apprentice ( exact model as yours , but mine is a little more beat up ) ...I set up the 3 position B switch for all 3 flight modes with the AS3X / SAFE Rx and my DX6 , but all I have are the 3S 2200's ( QUESTION ) do you think it will fly OK with the smaller 2200mAh Lipo?............ looking forward to flying it if we get a decent weather day here in the Midwest....any other helpful set up or flight tips you can offer would are greatly welcome...thanks much...

Gale, first thank you for checking out my content, also I am super excited for you. I still remember learning to fly, and I really do get that nostalgic feeling every time I throw that plane up in the air. To answer your first questions, the Apprentice will fly fine on 2200, just make sure that the battery position is spot on for the CG. Also, a friend has turned me on to a new battery provider: rcbattery.com/. They are inexpensive, and dependable. Give them a go for those replacement 3200s, or to stock up for longer flight days. Lastly, until you are confident try to fly with a friend spotting you, even if they are not a great pilot, just having someone there helps. Make sure you fly in wide open areas (no poles or trees), and plan your flights so you are not flying into the sun. Other than that, have fun! Cheers.

hH Rik. You have the option for both ready to fly and your own TX as long as it can bind to a Spektrum Rx.
