It's time for something very exciting - to us at least - it's time to try our hand at hemp lime plastering a whole room. We starting with the smallest (and least important) room in our old stone Portuguese farmhouse: the laundry room.
We've got all the materials and tools we need (we think) and so it's time to give some proper plastering a go. We're giving ourselves three days to complete the first coat. Let's see how we get on...

I noticed that when the rain was hammering down your floor seemed nice and dry, all due to the splendid drain system you installed as well as the waterproof floor. Your careful planning and hard work paid off!

Not only that, but the inside of the house is warmer due to putting insulation in the floor. Now we just need to finish doing that to the rest of the house, and plugging all the gaps/drafts around windows and doors 😃

Every time I watch the hard work you do, I think of the people preceding you who built the house and garden. I’m certain they would approve and be honored that you are putting so much love into the homestead. This was exciting to see the hemp/lime coat go on-so beautiful and I’m with you on desiring a rustic end result.

Love the time-lapse (and the music). Fantastic determination. Artistically beautiful outcome - the texture of the wall is a testament to your determination to maintain the character - and yes, I know it's a 'scratch'. What is probably the best part of all is that your time-analysis on this 'sub project' turned out to be very, VERY positive. And of, course there are always unintended consequences, like your 'incidental sauna'!!! Admirable in the extreme... This was just a fantastic episode on so many levels----the end result both cost and eye appeal seems to have been worth it. I know it's "just" a scratch coat, but when the window well was coated and the other walls suddenly lit up; I was one happy voyeur! Kudos to both of you on a job well done and I can't wait to see all of the rooms once they've received all of their coats. Words can't express. . . .

Adding the base coat makes the light brightness change considerably, especially after the "window" sides were done. I can notice just on my screen. The change in the room is remarkable. Lovely to see how old buildings come back to life again. 👍

This home is a fortress, here in Louisiana, there are no rocks, so no rock houses, tornadoes , or hurricanes will not likely blow this house away. This is hard work, I know the shoulders will be sore, but having videos of it shows how passionate you are about this place. Wish you all the best.

Its amazing how much brighter and more attractive the room is with even just the scratch coat of the lyme-hemp plaster on its walls. Nice! Taking it a room at a time is good, at least for me as I can see the transformation and it encourages me on to complete the big project. Love the effect of the light streaming through the window.

To get straight walls there are rendering metal rods. Attache with same material day before. Make it directly level over the entire wall. Pre moist the wall. Afterward moist can be soaked up and even hardens the lime.

Good to see the progress - sometimes when a mix is being made the ratios are shown - was it a 1:3:3:1 (water lime hemp sand) - it may help a few viewers to get a better idea for doing this themselves. When I've done work that involves the stretching and pushing that this looks like it does, doing other tasks throughout the day seems to reduce the pain, as does stretching a lot more, drinking as much water as is possible and thinking of it more like a light-workout and pacing yourself. BTW, if you want to get the lime off any of the woodwork you're going to finish, white vinegar is normally recommended - is it worth testing it out to show if it does work better than just water?

Interesting videos of yours that I’ve just found here. You were spot on in the last video of yours I just watched…..these recipes are closely guarded secrets and all but impossible to find. I think much of that has to do with the fact that working with lime mortars is an art that was almost lost (in the US) when cement came along and began being used.

Hi in Montenegro which has similar conditions to you guys. Lime putty is used a lot people over the years have used all sorts of things added to the mix. Having learned the ways to plaster in the uk I found the local way odd but it works very well. They make the mixture a little wetter and throw it on to the wall after which troweling or smoothing.

Oh boy this was exactly the information I’ve been looking for. Can’t afford to hempcrete all my walks to recommended 25cm for insulation but want to at least try as a plaster and hole filler, and couldn’t find any information on using quick lime / cal viva as that’s all I can find so far in Portugal other than nhl that I don’t want to use. Thank you both so much for taking such great care in detailing your work so that others can suffer a bit less hopefully 😂

So, a few things we’ve learnt since this video …. much easier to either: a. slake the quicklime first, cool overnight and then mix with hemp the next day, b. use hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2, not calcium dihydroxide CaH2O2 which is what the UK has). We have a couple of other videos that show both these if you fancy trawling through them (or let me know and I can find the appropriate ones) 😀 - Kylie
