When you buy a dress shirt with the intentions to tailor it you might notice that there's a different seam on the side that you want to keep. It's called a flat felled seam and it has a few benefits to it. One being that it sits flat on your body, and is a lot more comfortable. The second benefit is it looks a lot more professional. Funny thing is, professionals won't usually do this...weird.

Thanks for the vid D. After watching this I settled on a alternative technique to make a "faux flat felled seam." I turn the shirt inside out and run the side and sleeve through a serger to make a 5 thread safety stitch. This trims away the excess, finishes the edges and puts a nice chain stitch to make the seam. I switch to the sewing machine, fold and iron the seam allowance flat and use a double needle through the the top of the shirt. You can get the armhole through the machine, but it takes patience. You end up with a nice looking seam that looks like a flat felled on the outside.

I actually researched flat felled seams a bit after seeing this video, and on some online posts I came across some people suggested you CAN actually do a flat felled seam on a tube fabric (like a sleeve or jeans). Although they said it's a bit of a pain and involves a lot of scrunching of the fabric. Might wanna check that out. I plan to try it myself.

It's easier to get your flat-felled stitch straight if you use woven instead of knitted fabric, and if your seam allowance is even. Good video.

If you don't want regular seams to stick straight out, you could, you know, bust out the iron and iron them flat, either to one side or just iron them open down the middle. I like to iron them open because they sit a little flatter.

look up the model on youtube or amazon, or google. Be resourceful!!! You can even google the name of your machine and type in the words "user manual" afterwards to find a manual online for that sewing machine. For example "Kenmore X453 Sewing Machine User Manual". Like I said try to be resourceful and I'm sure you can find a lot about your machine online. This method works for ANY item not just sewing machines.

@@StylishDTailors you should practice doing something before you make an instructional video on how to do it. You gotta be able to do something yourself before trying to teach other people how to do it.

This was so needlessly rude. He addresses the unevenness in the video, explains what happened, and talks about how necessary it is to practice. It’s important for beginners to see those kinds of mistakes and know how to fix or avoid them, because they’re super common. As far as him learning how to do something before teaching it, he clearly knows what he’s doing well enough to clearly explain and demonstrate the seam. I’m not sure what made you think otherwise.

You'd get much better results if you took a minute to hit those folds with an iron before starting your stitch work. Also technically a flat felled seam should have both edges folded over and interlocking. A way to visualize it is to take both of your hands and fold your fingers in towards your palm to make something of a U shape, then turn one of your hands over so the two U shapes can slot into one another, that is how the fabric is supposed to be for this sort of seam. then each of those stitch lines you run go through 4 layers of fabric, super sturdy seam when done that way. If you really want to go overboard, you can also have a 3rd hidden seam inside. basically start by laying the panels side by side and overlapping the edges about a quarter-to-half inch, then run a line right up the center of that overlap (this both helps prevent the seam fraying apart over time and keeps the panels lined up and not getting the piling issues that can come from trying to pin through 4 layers when dealing with medium to heavy materials). Then fold it S wise, so the edges tucks in on both sides before ironing and running your two parallel visible stitch lines. Probably totally overkill for casual dress wear, but that is the way I go with heavier work clothes that need to be rugged and long lasting. I'm also actually using a hand cranked cobbler's sewing machine, which has a long thin bed and a walking head that can be rotated in any direction, so I can run my sleeves up along that base no problem, as they fit over it just fine and I just turn the head 90 degrees so it walks the fabric along the base.
