The post song section is Puerto Rican Bomba dance/drumming, where the drummers improvise in direct reaction to the movements of the dancers. Really interesting and mesmerising. The actual song goes for about 3 minutes. The rest is just an added video piece that's been produced by Omar, the guitarist.

Hi Jim! Thanks for sharing. In Puerto Rico, Bomba has been present for centuries since black slaves established their communities in the northeastern part of the island. Mainly in the town of Loiza where the video was produced. Omar Rodriguéz, Mars Volta guitarist, was born in Puerto Rico. Bomba rhythm must be in his DNA. The magic of this video is that his composition, with lyrics in English and Spanish, did not directly interfere with the Bomba rhythm. He was wise to separate both and let the bomba players and dancers do their thing. Bomba musicians are proud of their heritage and jealous of their rhythms and dances. Like Flamenco, the dancers respond to the musician's beats. If you like Bomba rhythm, you should listen to the "Plena", also from Puerto Rico. Best. Juan Esteban Suárez

When I discovered TMV, I was wooed by the sonic hell of De-Loused in the Comatorium. However, that does not mean every album should sound like that one, because it will always exist for me to return to. I couldn’t be happier with the direction the band is taking; so long as they continue to do what they love and enjoy the process…that’s all that matters to me.

Have to be honest, long time TMV fan but I was a bit disappointed by this. The 3 minute music section felt a lot less experimental and groundbreaking, rather it's a lot more poppy and commercial. They put out a press release with this and they themselves say the new album will be their most commercially appealing music yet. Hopefully the album has a bit more energy! Must be nearly time for you to do Frances now, right Jim? :D
@TheFreeshooter2 жыл бұрын
I get it but listening to them first when I was like 13-14 to now listening to this track being 30 I actually enjoyed this change of pace. They're not the same guys from nearly a decade ago and even with Noct they began to show how they've grown older (not a bad thing). I'm interesting to see how this translates live and where they go from here. Always about the journey I suppose.
@eetzdun96132 жыл бұрын
I mean if you think about it this is every bit experimental as their old music only difference is they aren't on psychedelics and they don't have the same engineer they had during de-loused/Frances... if you listen to their original recordings of deloused they recently put out as a vinyl that album sounds 100% nothing like what was actually released and that had everything to do with the engineer for that album he's the guy that made the album be the chaotic trippy greatness it was. But this song is still very experimental I mean what prog rock band is out here mixing Latin rhythms into the genre itself if anything this Is pretty groundbreaking for that genre itself and it's something only they could produce with their experience of all musical backgrounds, this is however just 1 song we shall see what rest sound like.
@KahurangiSteez2 жыл бұрын
@@TheFreeshooter Yeah, that's fine, they're allowed to evolve and change as musicians. Personally I only started listening to TMV 2 years ago. This isn't it for me, I have to say.
@KahurangiSteez2 жыл бұрын
@@eetzdun9613 yeah idk this isn't really experimental at all. The entire thing is in a major mode with a wee bit of dorian except for some small chromatic fills here and there you barely even notice. It's much more commercial and less musically diverse and sophisticated. Where are the hexatonics? Where are the whole tones? where are the polyrhthyms and odd meters? this is a much more pop oriented sound and objectively much simpler than their older stuff like Cassandra Gemini, Tetragrammaton, Take the veil etc. I'm sure it's intentional stylistic choice, too, but it isn't one I enjoy personally. Feels like 1 step forward and 3 back Also btw all their music is latin influenced. omars dad was literally a mariachi composer. them having latin hand drumming isn't exactly groundbreaking for TMV.

Interesting video but Omar has done a great job of breaking the old mold but is that a good thing. Tour is announced for August so a new album is expected. Hope this is not a sample of the entire album, how boring that would be. Drum circles have become more popular in my area so this was an interesting watch but...

How is it boring if it's just a 2 minute song with plenty progression?
@weirdfishes1002 жыл бұрын
Their singles are typically the most straightforward songs, so I would expect more diversity in the final record. However! Even if the whole album is a more accessible take on their sound (which from descriptions, it sounds like it will be), I'm always happy when bands make the music THEY want to make. What would actually be boring is an album with no surprises at all.
