Iza Szydlowska haha all good! It's true anyway, our winters are mild where I am. Maybe if I lived further down in Tasmania where it is closer to the south pole, I would have tried to defend the winter down under haha!

So about your raised bed. There's nothing wrong with your approach. Besides, if you think you could do better, that's a great excuse to work on it again in the future haha! I have reworked my gardens several times. No videos of those but I have photos stored somewhere. I like that you have all of those pots ready and staged where you plan to plant them. Very nice preview!

Hai Chuck! Yes, practice makes perfect. If I were to make another raised bed I think it would already go smoother. I love to be out there planting so it's all good. Today I'm gonna try to finish and plant in the rest of the plants and rocks. It's going to be a good day :)

Just found this... Beautiful! I'm in New Jersey and we just had a pretty mellow winter but lots of rain. Last summer I lost a lot of plants because of the humidity and I got mealies and white fungus on a lot of my plants. I was starting to think I can't do it but maybe I just need to make sure they are in sunnier and more well drained areas.

Thank you! Yes rain is horrible for succulents. My best advice is to build raised rockeries and fill them with cactus soil and pearlite, but they will still underperform in rainy times

I was wondering where have you been although i read your comments in some videos here and there. Now i understand that you had a lot of work to do and a lot of thinking. I felt happy that i saw that you upload a video. Totally worth it all this waiting. You have done an amazing job. All this colors mixed together make your raised bed looking fantastic. I love what you have done with your garden. Because even the other plants are different colors and this is an element i love to see in gardens. Thanks for sharing Iza.

Oh Olga thank you so much! Yes, ever since mid-May I've been outside digging in the dirt. I think I'm just now coming up for breath since the temperatures will be getting too hot for planting. The rock garden is just a fraction of what I've been up to, as I'm establishing a garden on a property that's pretty much empty - planting trees, shrubs, perennials - lots and lots and lots of work and I love it :)

I laughed at you teasing Chuck about his winter. I’m an Aussie also, and I am frightened of the winters you guys experience in the Northern hemisphere. Your Polish plant reminds me of my favourite Aussie flower - the flannel flower. I wonder if they are relatives? I love your raised garden and the sedums and sempervivums.

Hello Zanyzana :) Thank you so much for watching this video and for subscribing to my channel! I definitely need to make new content... The succulent bed has gone through a very brutal summer actually. Temperatures in the upper 90s, high humidity, and frequent prolonged rain. You'd think this was the tropics not Connecticut :) Alas, the Polish plant did not make it :( I knew this would be a learning experience, but it's still very sad. We shall see who survives the winter. Then next spring I will plant more successfully. The plant that has done the best is the little native opuntia. It has exploded with new paddles.

@izabelaszydlowska3940
@izabelaszydlowska3940 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheena, it cannot. It died that summer from too much rain. I think many of these sedums characterized as 'hardy' are cold hardy but will rot from our rains here :( I purchased another one though and I keep it inside under my grow lights, where it is doing very well. All the other sedums and hens & chicks can take our weather though

Hi! There are rabbits and chipmunks in my garden but so far they have left the rockery intact. I wonder if it has something to do with the opuntia. It is brutal - it has invisible spines that will embed in the sking when you barely brush by it. I wonder if it turned away several small critters... Now the rest of my garden gets pruned by rabbits throughout the year :(

Hi Liliya, sorry for the late reply - I'm in the Hartford area. I say go for it if you haven't yet. My recommendation is build a raised bed (like some big rocks) and fill with succulent soil and pearlite. This works really well for my semperviums and the cactus. Also, sedums will grow very well just in native soil

There is also a very large variety of cold hardy cacti, agave and aloe that good for the zone 6 garden. Many have beautiful early Spring and Summer flowers and they'll some survive even down to negative 30° if you provide good drainage with course sand. Hens and chicks are usually ok with an average native soil but others require you to let that moisture drain away as the plants are mostly dormant anyway mountaincrestgardens.com/

Hi Chris - so I have found that my main problem here in the Northeastern US is moisture/rain/snow. Even if I plant something like a cold-hardy agave in a very well draining mix, that is not good enough outside. This comes from experience as well as talking to fellow locals (like in my cactus and succulent society). I have learned so far that hardy sedums do great in my native soil, and hens and chicks and hardy opuntia do great in the rockery bed, which has cactus soil with pearlite. I use pumice for my indoor succulents, but it's too expensive for me to use outside. Thank you for the suggestions though! I have purchased stuff from mountain crest gardens before :)
