Let's Play Baldur's Gate 3 - Human Paladin - Part 1 - Immersive Gameplay Walkthrough

In this series, we'll adventure through Baldur's Gate 3 as a Human Paladin.

Some advice for combat: 1. Larian loves verticality. There will be lots of opportunities to get high ground, always try to get it if you can. Strong characters like yours can shove enemies off of high ground and they will take falling damage. Sometimes enough to kill them. 2. Stealth. Every character in your party can go into stealth mode, not just your rogue. If you are atracking from stealth, you get advantage on your attack roll. This means that you get to roll twice on your atrack roll and keep whichever roll is higher. When you go ibto stealth mode, you will see red vision cones in front enemies. As long as you remain outside of thise cones, you will remain hidden from your enemies. When you enter the vision cone, you make a stealth roll. If you pass, you remain hidden. If you fail, you are spotted, and that character enters combat. 3. Whike traveling if you pass near a hidden object, your characters will make a perception check. This is passive, so you don't do anything. It is automatic. If at least one party member passes, you will see the hidden object. If everyone fails, you can't find it 4. Paladins like you have sworn an Oath. Take time to read your Oath carefully so you really truly understand it. If you don't, you can break your Oath easily in combat or through dialogue. If you break your Oath, you lose all your Paladin abilities, so make sure you know and understand your Oath, because the game won't warn you and say, "are you sure you want to do this?" 5. You're attributes, or stats, do not increase as you level up (other than hit points) and what is called your proficiency bonus. Every 4th class level you get a Feat that can give you special abilities or bonuses. One of the options is a Feat that gives you two +1 attribute points you can place however you want. Notice I said "class level" not character level. Every time you level up, you can either level up your current class, OR you can take a level in a new class. If you are level 3 Paladin and level 1 Wizard, you are a 4th level character, but you do not get a Feat because none of your classes is level 4. So if you want to multiclass, you do delay getting your feats. 6. Look for environmental effects to deal more damage to your enemies. Some barrals will explode when hit with fire attacks. The grease spell coats the ground with a slippery grease that is also flammable. Creatures coated in water. Or standing in it, will take extra damage from electricity effects and spells. AoE (Area of Effect) spells you cast can hurt your allies, so be careful how you position them. 7. Spells marked "concentration" cam only have one active at a time. So if you cast a vonce tration spell 1 round, than a different one the next, the 1st one will be cancelled automatically, so be aware of what spells are concentration spells, and which ones are not. This should get you started. Happy adventures!

God damn. This is well fucking written. I started this game yesterday knowing nothing about Baldurs Gate. I’ve found myself drawing from experience from WoW (pulling mobs) and the combat system from Wartales (oddly very similar mechanics). I feel like I’m starting to get a grip of the combat in this game. Your comment being a summary of what I’ve learned lol

I think the hardest part of this game for me was learning the combat systems too. Once you’ve got them down, everything becomes buttery smooth. This is my first CRPG as well, but I’m loving it. Glad to see you picked it up as well.

you didn't even look at the sub classes or anything, also for the bonuses you have to click to add in the ones you want, you also gathered everyone in the doorway in a neat little pile before the enemies. You have to spread your team out and not leave such a big target for the enemies. lol

Love Paladins, played bg1&2 as palys also NWN but have yet to play bg3 as im dirt poor. Some of thd absolute best swords are paladin specific weapons like thd Crom and Daystar in Bg2.

It's a good start mate. Don;t see a lot of gamers trying to RP immersively these days. I have played a few CRPGs so here are a few tips: - save often and save before each conversation or new exploration; you never know when you will make a critical error in conversation or in a tough combat. best to have many backups; - it helps to level up all your characters before exploring some ruins or dungeons. Your wizard went un-leveled the whole episode and that is why he died in 2 shots; - read all you character's abilities and actions carefully to learn what is useful for each situation. I noticed you hardly use abilities and prefer a more direct attack route. Larian RPGs really encourage people to learn to use all their abilities in the sandbox of combat; - use the environment in your favor: narrow doors to funnel enemies, high ground for range classes, environment hazards (cliffs, explosive barrels, water, destructible decorations, etc), you can shove enemies off of high places, you can throw any kind of object, you can jump from a ledge to another or up and down to reach enemies (the more STR a character has the farther they can jump); - try to use weapons that your character is good at (read your character proficiencies carefully). For example a paladin may be good with melee weapons but will be much less effective with ranged weapons. A mage may be good with staves but nothing else; be prepared by knowing what your characters can do well but also their weaknesses; - try to use short rests after a tough fight in which most of your party took some damage and also to recover a few spell slot uses. Some spells can only be used a few times a day (long rest) and then you need to sleep at the camp to recover health and spell usage. Again, read your spells and abilities carefully to learn which ones can be used all the time and which can only be used a few times a day. - last but not least: in the early game try to switch characters in your party quite often in order to find some sweet ability combos between them and your main. Sometime you will get stuck on a tough fight, but if you fast travel to your camp and change your roster, you might just get the perfect char for that fight. Save often and dont be afraid to experiment with all kinds of spells and character combinations. GL!

Great stuff, Robert. I _absolutely_ recommend easy difficulty unless you're a D&D CRPG vet. Computer-mediated D&D combat is utterly brutal. It works on tabletop because DMs fudge/forget so much. When you have well-programmed AI enemies, it's a clusterfrak unless you know exactly what to do.

if you are going to read out the text, best to role play the text and not just read it as if you're embarrassed and just want to get the words out of the way. Be an actor like in a play and put some character emotion into your efforts. Just saying, there's a lot of listeners who would like to listen to the dialogue in role.

Yep. It’s because you can pick from a bunch of MC voices… so they couldn’t have them all read all the lines you could potentially choose from.

That is one point, but usually in CRPGs they leave the main character silent because many people like to RP themselves and actually read the dialogue out loud and even do voices. I know i am one of those and i really enjoy reading my own lines as i like to RP a lot. Looks like Robert is trying too. Good job so far sir!
