You might recognize Sherlock if you change the name to Mastermind and replace the numbers with colors. Each player chooses a four-digit number, then tries to guess the other player's number. Each guess gets you clues in the form of "bulls", meaning that one of your digits matches the opponent's digit in the same place, and "cows", meaning that you have the right digit but in the wrong place. Using those clues, you have to guess your opponent's number before they guess yours.

I've never played Mastermind, but I figured it must be a take on a different game with a Sherlock skin. Too bad, I wanted to solve murders.

Lazy Game Reviews fallout 3's hacking is also a form of mastermind/Sherlock just substituting words for numbers and colors. I was rather surprised you both hadn't come across this number version before. A lot of the compilation CDs I had back in the day would have a couple variations (annoyanly in the wrong lists)

44:51 I found out that "Green" is a game about pavers trying to take over your land with pavement and turn it into a parking lot. You have to trap the pavers and build your land back and you can also trap the pavers as well to try and prevent them from paving your land.

So best as I can figure out, for the number game the "bulls" are the numbers that are right and in the right spot, the "cows" are numbers that are right but in the wrong sequence. It's very strange the game expects you to tell Sherlock what he got right or wrong...

This video is a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. (I'm pretty sure my dad got that exact same CD back in the day) I don't know if you're planning to come back to it, but just in case, here are my votes for which games to play: Captain Comic. Probably the first side-scrolling platformer I ever played. (Might even pre-date Apogee!) Has weird controls, (Space to jump, insert to fire, alt to open doors, capslock to teleport) but I had a lot of fun with it as a kid. :) Bio Menace. Much more advanced side-scrolling platformer by Apogee. Blow up monsters in bloody ways with machine guns and grenades. Awesome! :D Duke Nukem 1 and 2. Classic side-scrolling platformers by Apogee that were the predecessors to the more modern Duke Nukem 3D and Duke Nukem Forever. DN2 is considerably more advanced than DN1, with improved graphics, music, and sound. Monster Bash. Side-scrolling platformer by Apogee where you're a kid, rescuing cats and dogs, which sounds super cutesy, but there are also monsters that you can dismember in bloody ways with your slingshot. :) One Must Fall. My brother and I still sometimes like to play this classic fighting game from Epic Megagames to this day. :) A variety of giant robots duke it out (1 or 2 players) in a variety of arenas with a huge variety of moves and abilities. Hocus Pocus. Another side-scrolling platformer from Apogee. (They sure made a lot of these!) To be honest, I'm not too fond of this one, because you can't hold down the fire button to fire; you have to keep pressing it, but I have to mention it because I have an ex-girlfriend who absolutely adores it. :) Hexxagon. Fun little puzzle/strategy game where you're trying to change the other player's pieces to your colour. I remember getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. :) Raptor. Top-down view airplane shoot-em-up game from Apogee. Pretty epic. :) Block Man. Might not be your type of game, but it's a challenging puzzle game that I enjoyed at one time. Brix. Very colourful puzzle game. And finally, not exactly recommendations, but a couple of games I still play to this day, windowed and off to the side while I'm watching KZbin videos, "Battle of Atlantis," (Kind of a Risk clone) and "Mine." (Basically Minesweeper, played with your keyboard)

Funny, when these games were released I was an adult working in a shareware company, distributing shareware to the unsuspecting public. My favourite ones were Ally Cat and Wolfenstein. Not that I got time to play them much as we could not afford a PC at home at the time so only got to play them on our breaks and while the disks were copying. I didn't get my first PC until 2000 and shareware was pretty much dead by then. I think!

44:40 Green is an eco-strategy shareware game for one player. The game is based on a map which represents an idyllic rural area. The planners are out in force building pavements all over the landscape and the player must build walls and clear pathways in order to prevent them. Points are awarded for planners trapped or immobilized by walls and points are lost as the planners lay more pathways. So there ya go... I found that description online.
