Holy shit Grandia... In my mind still the greatest story of the spirit of adventure (actually, the whole series captures these themes perfectly). A game that had anime tier gorgeous scenes for the time it was created, a bold take on the ATB RPG style that has yet to be matched in its simplicity yet enjoyability. And the grand champion of CRINGE voice acting, not even Tidus' epic laugh holds a candle to the entirety of this game. I actually remember the entirety of this opening fetch quest despite having played this game so long ago... it was probably one of the least intrusive tutorial segments of a jrpg that ended up teaching a ton about exploring areas, utilizing the camera (one of the hardest challenges of many a good game) and effective npc dialogue. Grandia's world just feels so damn alive even seeing the game literally decades after its release. The nostalgia is too damn real, can't wait to hear all of the skill and spell voice clips in action again, easily the most hilarious thing in PSX Gen jrpgs.

I still remember with vivid details the climb over the End of the World, as well as the plot twist over the whole affair with the "superior races" being less relevant than Justin's sheer willpower. Also friendship. So much friendship... hahahaha I think I was 8 when I played this game. Great times.

I finally decided to start watching this LP! I am really surprised there is voice acting in this game! It is really rare for a ps1 game to have voice acting at all. The only game that comes to mind is Metal Gear Solid and that had surprisingly good voice acting for its time. Anyway I've watched an LP of Grandia 2 so I am looking forward to this one.
@aulddragon7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's rather unusual. A lot of others had small bits of it (like Xenogears), but few had even as much as this game does, at least among RPGs.

I don't think I have heard of this game. So I shall watch you play it as you do a pretty good job with most RPGs. You don't 100% everything, but that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Also, I like how you do voices during non-voiced lines.

this was my final fantasy back in the days. the only ff I played back then was ff7 but I was more attached to grandia. only way later on I played ff tactics, ffx and x-2 when I became more of an ff fan but that's only because I never heard of another grandia(before the internet was popular).

It's a bit off the turn-based rpg trail, but it's probably the PSX's best match to the Legend of Zelda franchise's Action RPG adventure gameplay. The game boasts extremely tight controls, satisfying combat, a dark story, and if I'm remembering correctly, one of the most monstrous learning curves from the generation.

Yeah, Breath of Fire 4 was cool. Looking at Grandia's graphics, it's surprising that this game is fully voiced.
@aulddragon8 жыл бұрын
Well, not "fully" by any means. But it does have a lot more voice acting than a lot of other games of the era (I don't recall anything else I played at the time that had as much voiceacting).
@angel89legna8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well 'fully voiced' to me is mostly voiced cutscenes and small things like in battles/menus. Just 'voiced' is like Legend of Zelda, Okami or Monster Hunter with just grunts, sighs, screams/yells, etc. and BARELY understandable word utterances/gibberish.
@AzureIV8 жыл бұрын
Not fully. Auld had to supply a lot of voices to this video alone.
@badassoverlordzetta8 жыл бұрын
The Lunar series made a fair effort at voice acting in it's PSX remake (Silver Star Story Complete) in 1996, a year before Grandia actually. IMO, the voice acting dub team of Lunar actually did a better job with what they chose to voice than Grandia. That said, both game series are incredible even with their stylistic differences. Also, there's Legend of the Dragoon and Legend of Legaia that had some degree of in battle voice acting for special moves. Jade Cocoon was heavily dialogue driven and had some pretty good voice acting. It suffers from being a bit ghibli in terms of how ham-handed it's thematic messages were, and the gameplay was a nightmare when compared to other jrpgs at the time. Complete with Resident Evil tank controls and horrifying monster pokemon style battles.
