Wow! I did not expect that you will make such an effort to get the best ending. There are 5 endings. One is an alien joke ending. Other 2 endings are based on whether you save Cybil or not, but not too different than the first 2. You actually figured it out. Alessa and Cheryl are the same person. Alessa split her soul in two to stop Dahlia and her cult to give birth to the God with the help of Alessa power. Dahlia needed to wait for other half of the soul to come back (Cheryl). She used a magical spell to bring back Cheryl to the town. Lisa has been taking care of burnt Alessa in the hidden place in the basement of the hospital. I think Kauffman used her drug addiction to keep her there and keep her mouth shut about it. I don't know if Kauffman belonged to the cult that Dahlia belonged to. That dark world you get into is a manifestation of Alessas fears and that kind of stuff. Because she is "in a nightmare that she never awakens", while in the comma. For example, grey kids in the school represent her bullies in her school. And the sound they make is actually kids laugh played on reverse

Oh Wow! That's really interesting. I thought that I was going off the deep end with my theories into thinking that Cheryl and Alessa were the same person. Now that it's all said and done, I suppose I'll read up on the full story of the first game. I will admit that it has some really entertaining lore behind it.
