Got this game a few weeks ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, Commander S.M. North and the USS Skipjack met their end during a photo recon of Bandar Seri Bagawan- stupid pillbox. Managed to bring a destroyer, two gunboats, and two subchasers down with me, though.

One positive for the S boats is that their less advanced, World War One vintage Mark 10 torpedoes actually worked most of the time from the start of the war, unlike the Mark 14s (which were buggy as hell until late 1943) which constituted the standard armament of the U.S. fleet boats.

IRL you have to clear your baffles before surfacing to make sure there aren't any Japanese fishing boats above you or nothin' like that. Since you can't hear over the sounds of your own engine you have to turn left and right to get those last few degrees of audio.

Vanilla is kinda fun, I had a Balao class boat with dual bofors AA guns. I decided to raid a port, as I was trying to escape after sinking a handful of juicy targets, I was spotted by a pair of destroyers (akizukis if memory serves), seeing no easy way out, I decided to try my luck on the surface. After surfacing, I jumped on the fore AA gun and targeted the command deck of the closest destroyer (about 250m away at 40° to port) using HE rounds, I kid you not, the thing died after 4 full magazine salvos, I couldn't believe my eyes.

The only thing that separates Juicy Rump from the rest of the crew is that he doesn't hide his preferences behind his name. You go, Juicy Rump! We haven't lost anybody in this career, although from last time, I don't think people were too pissed. That said, we lost everybody in a single attack, so that might have made people feel more reverent or something. But hell, I was pissed!

Shirley? Ehm, okey, I'll try not to, I guess. Although, when under great stress I may suffer from temporary memory loss, and from now on there's always a chance that Shirley will be the only thing I remember. So the crews last moments, as we sink into the abyss, might be me running around screaming Shirley. I think this may be the real motivation as to why we want to avoid dying and win the war.

The S-boat was mainly used as a trainer after Feb '42.

Do you mean February of 1943? The S boats were used extensively operationally in the Aleutians (based at Dutch Harbor) as well as in the Solomon Islands (based at Brisbane) until the end of 1942 at least.

Hello. I'm here in 2020 because this game has just come up in a sale ( not advertising, won't do it ) for £2.99 and I thought, "why not?" I was a massive fan of SS II and wasted countless hours on my Amigas playing that game, racking up the tonnage. I think I'll give it another go and see how it holds up on modern PC. I think I might be disappointed by the implementation yet will stay for the gameplay.

This is a perfectly valid method given the tools that are in the game, but it removes a huge amount of the challenge for me so I won't be doing it (although the temptation, especially in rough weather, is pretty hard to resist!)
