Blocking is broken in Elden Ring.

And poking from behind a shield is even more so. It negates all blockstun and gives you a hit in with the damage of a normal R1 with the bonus damage of counter attacks. Pair that with the temporary infinite stamina Tear and... well, you can essentially fight normally with infinite health.

@@chaoticstarfish3401 that's right. But poking deals less damage than normal R1's. It has a lower motion value. However if you're attacking during the enemy's attack animation, which is what happens most of the time if you're a shield-poking build, counter-damage from the pierce damage makes up for it.

@@ulysses5340 Are you certain? I tried it out with the Estoc on a soldier at Gatefront a few months back. Maybe I misread the damage at the time and thought it was the same all this time (or got it mixed up with Dark Souls), or maybe Thrusting Swords are exception? In any case, even with lower base damage, and disconsidering the counter damage that would compensate for it in most cases, it's a very powerful ability.

Sure is. Radahn really wasn't that hard when you play with a shield.

@@chaoticstarfish3401 yes. I'm sure. And you're right. It compensates and adds even more damage if you manage to attack during the enemy's attack animation. Add the spear talisman to your build and it's even more broken.

Honestly, magic looks cool but I hate using it. Unless you are doing some giga broken build, I don't see the point to it when a giant sword or even just a katana is gonna do the same job but simpler. But hey, that's just me.

well the main advantage of magic is being able attack the boss from further away

Even if not stronger, magic builds feel much more elegant and strategic, which is why some people including me prefer magic
