The song is based on a true love story. Veronika was a woman from the Croatian village of Desinić. She fell in love with Frederick II (who was the count of Celje and later the Ban of Slavonia) and they got married, but Frederick's father (Hermann II) was greatly opposed to the marriage. He initiated a trial against Veronika accusing her of witchcraft. Although she was acquitted by the court, Hermann order the execution of Veronika by drowning (in 1425). Veronika was buried in Braslovče and a few years later Frederick arranged for her remains to be reburied at the Carthusian monastery so she can have a honorable resting place ❤ Btw the song is so unique and epic + Raiven is an opera singer, she can sing those high notes!

It is supposed to be a real historical person. Veronika Deseniška (1380 - 1425) was the second wife of Frederick II. of Celje, but since she was a noblewoman of a lower status, Friderik's father, the powerful Count Herman II of Celje, did not approve of their union. When Friderik and Veronika fled to Fridrihštajn castle near Kočevje, where they secretly got married, old Herman sent an army after them with the order to capture them. Friderik managed to save Veronika from the castle, but he was captured by the soldiers and imprisoned in the tower at Celje Castle - this is still called Friderik's Tower. He was imprisoned here for more than four years, Veronica was also captured and imprisoned. Herman accused the unhappy Veronika of being a prostitute who seduced his son. They organized a trial that lasted two days, and although the judges found no guilt, let alone a crime, Herman had her murdered. he basically accused her of witchery and drowned her

I hope she delievers on stage. I don't want the music video to be what makes this song perfect. The choreography, the looks, the cinematography are really catchy and mysterious. There are many intentional pauses that give meaning to the song. Also, the music and melody uplift, even overshadow the whole song, in a good way. Loved the song, but to do well on esc, it must serve the exact same on stage.

Veronika of Desenice (Croatian: Veronika Desinićka; Slovene: Veronika Deseniška or Veronika z Desenic; died 17 October 1425)[1] was the second wife of Frederick II, Count of Celje. Early life Little is known of her early life. It is believed the name Deseniška derives from the village of Desinić in Croatia, where Frederick also had extensive estates, and it appears in the forms Dessnitz, Dessenitz, Desnicze, Teschnitz, Teschenitz, and Dessewitz in various historical sources. Marriage and persecution Veronika was of lesser status,[1] and Frederick's father Hermann II was greatly opposed to the marriage. The chronicles of the Counts of Celje suggest he had his son arrested and, while holding him prisoner, initiated a trial against Veronika accusing her of witchcraft. She was acquitted by the court. Murder Despite the court's ruling, she was incarcerated in Ojstrica Castle near Tabor and murdered (supposedly on the orders of Hermann II) by drowning in 1425. She was buried in Braslovče and a few years later Frederick arranged for her remains to be reburied at the Carthusian monastery at Jurklošter and in her memory also made an endowment to the monastery at Bistra.[1] In culture Veronika and Frederick's tragic love story, which also marked the beginning of the end of the House of Cilli, has been an inspiration for numerous literary creations. Among others, she was the protagonist of Josipina Turnograjska's 1851 story Nedolžnost in sila (Innocence and Force), Josip Jurčič's 1880 play Veronika Deseniška, Oton Župančič's 1924 play Veronika Deseniška, Bratko Kreft's 1932 play Celjski Grofje (The Counts of Celje), Danilo Švara's 1946 opera Veronika Deseniška, Franček Rudolf's 1968 play Celjski grof na žrebcu (The Count of Celje on a Stallion) and 1974 play Veronika, and Dušan Čater's 1996 children's novel Veronika Deseniška. She has also inspired works in Croatian, German, Czech, and Italian. The Veronika Poetry Award and the Veronika Festival are named after Veronika of Desinić.[2][3] The Slovene entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, performed by Raiven, is titled "Veronika" after her

The song takes inspiration from Veronika deseniška story. She was the first woman in slovenia to be accused of witchcraft (falsely, due to politics), and while she had a good lawyer and ended up being acquitted, her father in law who accused her in the first place had her put in prison. Meanwhile he forcibly held his son/her husband. She was murdered in prison. They drowned her. She is a popular literary tragic figure.

I agree with the analysis at the end. Love the visuals and it has some strong staging potential but it all comes down to the performance and while the song has some interesting bits and pieces, as a whole I was expecting more dynamic range that wasn't written in and that I know Raiven can handle. The song is cool but along with other song might not be catchy enough unless the performance and staging really blows it out of the water and makes it stand out.

The song is about a witch named Veronika... She is the first girl to be accused of being a witch in the 15th century (I think). She was killed by being drowned, which is why there is a motif of water in the video and in the text. The lyrics of the song are "I am, you are Veronika" and "Rani me, love me, love me..." Bojan from Jocker out is one of the song's songwriters. Please research more about the song as I am not completely sure of the information written above. About song Veronika (to maybe understand this drowning, bodies and all the water more): The story of the love between Count Friderik Il and Veronika of Desenice is one of the greatest love stories in Slovenian history. He was the son of a powerful ruler, while she was a rural noblewoman. Their love was so strong that nothing could stop it. Rumour has it that Frederick Il of Celje, son of the mighty Count Herman Il, had a hand in the death of Elizabeth of Frankopan, his first and legal wife. Contrary to his father's will he secretly married Veronica of Desenice immediately afterwards. Because of this, his father had him imprisoned in the main tower, where he spent over 4 years and where, according to a legend, he wanted to starve him. Meanwhile, after being acquitted in the first witchcraft process in Slovenia initiated by this sly old Count, Veronica was drowned. Herman lI accused unfortunate Veronika of being a witch who had cast a spell on his son and he was 100% sure that's why his son killed his first wife and married Veronika. I'm Slovenian and I'm soooo proud of Raiven (her real name Sara Briski Cirman). She is fenomenal artist, musician, (opera) singer, and excellent harpist. I love her and her capacity of knowledge of music. She is really next level artist. Go RAIVEN!
