Actually, that type of yellowing is typically not caused by cigarettes, as much as it looks like it is. It's caused by exposure to UV light. And it is possible to remove the discoloration with a combination of hydrogen peroxide and either UV light or heat. Look up Retrobright sometime. But yeah, the way it's more yellow on one side, that's definitely a sign of UV exposure and not something like being in a smoking house. For those chemistry nuts out there, flame retardants in plastic like that are based on bromine. UV light causes a chemical reaction which releases the bromine from the compounds. And bromine is that characteristic yellowish/brownish color.

about why people watch these gameboy videos. most of us had a gameboy of some kind growing up. its a real shame seeing a gameboy, an iconic object of nostalgia, in rough shape. cracked screen, yellowing, simply not turning on... yeah all thats lame man. seeing you taking a gameboy and making it good as new is really satisfying, man, even if it is seeing the same thing. you asked what we'd like to see in the future. how about giving the sega gamegear some love.

Not relevant to this video, but does the orange Xiaomi screw driver set you use come with the smaller tri wing bit? I've seen other older videos of yours with the slide opening grey case one and the tri bit was too big and you said to buy another one. I've ordered the orange one so wondering if I need to separately buy that bit?? Sorry it's in the wrong video - see it as a complement - I'm binge watching so many lol! Cheers.

Nice video!, thanks for the upload :). Couple of questions though (if anyone can answer).. 1: When you turn it on, and you get the blocks scrolling down the screen... isn't that suppose to say Nintendo ? 2: The restore of the eyellowing plastic looks very good.. though wondering, does the chemical process damage the plastic? Does it become brittle in any way ?
@TheRetroFuture6 жыл бұрын
1) it says Nintendo if a game is in there and has been read. It shows blocks when the game isnt inserted. I cant remember without watching the video but I think this was a fake cart which I used to test it. 2) yes it can make it more brittle if overdone.

alcohol is used to clean contact points and remove general gunk. It has no lasting effect on the electronics (it is flammable so turn it off and be sure to remove power) plus alcohol air drys very quickly.
